In his apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium, in which Pope Francis wrote about some of the modern world challenges, he pointed out to the challenges for urban cultures emphasizing the fact, that “the new cultures (…) constantly being born in these vast new expanses where Christians are no longer the customary interpreters or generators of meaning” along with changes undergoing there “create are a privileged locus of the new evangelization” (EG 73). The Pope also noted that “this challenges us to imagine innovative spaces and possibilities for prayer and communion which are more attractive and meaningful for city dwellers” (ibidem). Responding to the Pope’s appeal, the author of this article addresses the issue of the future of the pastoral ministry carried out in the cities in the spirit of the pastoral conversion and missionary pastoral ministry (EG 25; 33-35). at the beginning, he presents the chosen sociological determinants concerning the urban pastoral ministry (1), then he describes the theological grounds of the urban pastoral ministry, pointing out to the teaching of the Magisterium regarding the pastoral conversion and missionary pastoral ministry (2). The final result of his reflections is depicting the lines of action which would lead to the renewal and development of the pastoral ministry in the cities in Poland (3).

On 20th July 2020 Congregation for the Clergy issued an instruction The pastoral conversion of the Parish community in the service of the evangelising mission of the Church. This document brings together the previous teachings of the Magisterium regarding the Parish community, approaching them from the perspective of the Pope Francis’s teaching calling for pastoral conversion of the whole Church, which should result in the missionary attitude of bringing the message of Gospel to all the people. Issuing of the instruction evoked different responses. Some of them were positive, praising the presenting of the integrated knowledge regarding the legal basis of the Parrish community functioning, as well as speaking highly of this document in the context of mapping out a wide range of the contemporary circumstances in which the parishes function. Also, providing the inspiration for the renewal of the Parish Ministry was ap-preciated. However, some criticisms were also raised, regarding the lack of new solutions aiming at involving the lay faithful in the life of the Parish community, putting too little emphasis on the necessity of the personal parishes development and the offer of the detailed pastoral methods. The author describes the main ideas included in this document, which has not reached a wider readership in Poland. At the same time, he (1), presents the discussion that the issuing of the instruction has evoked (2), referring to the document itself and suggesting some inspiration for creative searching for the ways of reaching the renewal of the Parish community in the context of the Pastoral conversion (3).

Atheism as a practice of life is becoming increasingly popular in modern western societies. A life devoid of reference to religious practices is becoming not so much an element of rebellion against the established religious traditions, but more of a certain obviousness that no one contests. Hence the question arises, how is the Church to function in such an environment and how to preach the Gospel? Pope Francis, and whim him modern theology, is increasingly emphasizing the role of the Church as a servant who, in humility and social engagement and through work of mercy, can preach the Gospel to modern man. The Church should proclaim the Gospel not through speculative theology, but through engagement with the poors and most need.

In 1853, a Catholic mission station was founded in Olecko. Land property was bought with an intention to build a church. Johannes Osinski became the first priest of this town on 22nd May 1853. His duties included the organisation of Catholic ministry in the Olecko district. In the years 1859-1861, a Neogothic church was built in Olecko; it was blessed on 1st December 1861. Bishop Antoni Frenzel dedicated the temple to the Holy Cross and Saint Adalbert on 27th August 1862. A Catholic school in this town was founded probably in 1866, but it was closed quite soon afterwards. Rural chapels serviced by the priest of Olecko were founded, among others, in a village named Borawskie and in a settlement named Kozia Góra (Ziegenberg). At the end of the 19th century, the priest from Olecko also celebrated Catholic Masses in Gołdap. One of the greatest problems of the Catholic community in Olecko was to guarantee appropriate remuneration for the priest. He received an yearly allowance from the Boniface and Adalbert Associationin Frombork. Numerous construction and redecoration works on the church buildings were also funded from this source. In 1929, the legal status of the Olecko pastoral institution was approved by the state authorities.

Suffering and pain are part of every human life, despite the fact that modern science has made enormous efforts to eliminate them. In this paper, we deal with the mystery of suffering from a philosophical and biblical point of view. We pay special attention to the thought message of P. Strauss, a Slovak doctor and convert, according to which pain is a part of the concept of life. The second part presents the practical-pastoral aspects of care for the sick and suffering. The Christian understanding of this care is about the realization of Christ’s power and love. At the same time, it is important to maintain sensitivity to the inner attitudes of the suffering person, his value equipment and religious beliefs.

Spiritual development has been an important issue in the lives of many people since the dawn of humanity. In order to achieve their goal of greater spiritual maturity, they often asked help from a person they considered to be more spiritually advanced than themselves. With the beginnings of Christianity, this human propensity became even more pronounced and formalized, taking the shape of spiritual guidance in some form, which, over periods of both growth and decline, has recently come to resurgence in popularity. Today, there are also a significant number of people who seek professional help from therapists in resolving psychological issues and who, at the same time, would also like to use their personal spiritual resources to help them reach healing. Thus, a growing need for spiritually integrated psychological counseling has arisen. These developments require a better understanding of both the spiritual processes and the manner of helping people grow spiritually through the door of psychological counseling in some form. This article is a survey of the literature that presents a broad range of models to meet spiritual needs of modern people. Presenting such a variety of approaches is an attempt to widen the scope of what is offered as therapeutic assistance for spiritually sensitive individuals. In the conclusion, the author proposes new modalities for the inclusion of spiritual content in the counseling process.

The church passed on the theme of children who died without baptism, including the miscarried children, the path from hell through the abyss to the hope of salvation – and it is still an open question, topic to discussion. The hope of salvation of these children is a return to the evangelical words of Jesus: „Let the children come to me, do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of God” (Mk 10,14). Inappropriate pastoral practice was replaced with the funeral rites provided for a child without baptism. It is necessary to intensify pastoral efforts aimed at forming the full awareness of parents and the whole society with regard to the death and burial situation of children who died without holy baptism, mainly miscarried children, which in result will lead to the proper pastoral praxeology.

In the XIX. and the first half of the XX. century Gołdap belonged to those towns where the Catholic diaspora was surrounded by a substantial majority of Evangelicals. Masses have been celebrated there since 1884. In 1892 Catholic efforts were started to create an independent pastoral institution. For that pur-pose, a plot of land was bought where a church was to be built. The construction plans were prepared by Jobsky, a master bricklayer from Gołdap. By December 1893, the church was constructed in a rough state. The investment was sup-ported by Catholics from Warmia and other dioceses, as well as by some or-ganizations, particularly the Boniface Association in Paderborn. On 16. August 1894, Eduard Lilienweiβ was appointed as the first priest of Gołdap and the church was consecrated on 9. September 1894. Its dedication, led by the Bishop of Warmia Andreas Thiel, was held on 25. June 1895. The church was dedi-cated to Saint Leo the Great and Saint Boniface. Catholic services were deliv-ered by the priest from Gołdap to other places, including Darkiejmy (currently Oziorsk) and Węgorzewo (since 1900). In 1890 738 Catholics were covered by the Gołdap pastoral service, and in 1938 there was 650 of them. The authorities of the diocese and church organizations (like the Boniface and Adalbert Asso-ciation in Frombork) participated in financing priests in Gołdap.

The hermitage of Wigry Island has not got a full monograph study so far. This article brings new and fundamental arrangements regarding to the Camaldolese monastery in Wigry. It shows the region of present-day Suwalki, before the hermits came. It presents the state of research over the history of hermitages in Wigry. It depicts circumstances of the founding process made by the King John Casimir in 1667, building of the monastery complex in Wigry and the arranging process of the peninsula. It describes the process of everyday life of the hermits, their pastoral care of local population. Camaldolese are presented as pioneers of economic development in the region of Suwalki. It presents their 132 years activity in religious, cultural, social and economical aspect that was stopped by winding up the monastery in the Prussian annexation. This article enrich all knowledge up to now on Camaldolese monastery in Wigry, expands historiographic and pastoral output in the extent of research of history of Suwalki region.

Social media’s tremendous popularity along with their huge potential in-flicts a question if they can be used in pastoral care activities. Lasting for over 2 years COVID-19 pandemic caused a significant drop in the number of regularly practicing believers and an important rise of social media users within church believers, especially among young adults. Because of the pandemic, social media became a chance and a tool used to reach out to young people both believers and non-believers but also to the ones seeking God. Therefore, in this paper the Author touches upon the areas of using social media in passing on the faith and proclaiming the Gospel. The author also makes a selection among social media based on their popularity and attractiveness from parishioner point of view. Finally, by using questionnaire survey, the author shall also assess social media functionalities used by selected Parish.

The modern world, largely dominated by information and communication technology, poses new pastoral challenges, one of them evangelization and catechization on the Internet. This study was aimed at investigating and analyzing the image of marriage and family on parish websites in the Archdiocese of Warmia. The qualitative analysis of informational and visual messages on marriage and family available on parish websites of the Archdiocese of Warmia showed that the content on these issues is rarely updated. Information is limited to the conditions for entering the sacrament of marriage and preparing the betrothed to confer this sacrament upon each other. It is sometimes extended to other pastoral aspects such as encouraging families to pray together, celebrating family events, organizing holidays for children and youth, offering information on the domestic church community. Therefore, more attention must be paid to the importance of parish websites in creating the image of marriage and family. In order for this space to be fully utilized, seminary alumni must be properly prepared in the fields of media education and pastoral family care.

The Covid-19 pandemic caused changes in all areas of society, including the religious sphere. A number of activities moved to the internet. Despite the difficulties, the Church did not stop proclaiming the Good News during this time and continued much of it online in order to remain connected to the believers. In this article, the Author used the magisterial method and content analysis of websites and social media, as well as a categorisation of online pastoral work during the pandemic period. The field of analysis was the Diocese of Elk. The Author presented a case study of Y major online activities of clergy and the laity during this time. These were: charity, evangelisation, catechesis, culture, prayer, Holy Masses and religious services, Holy Scripture, retreats and news. To provide a nationwide context, he also cites quantitative nationwide studies in relation to online broadcasting of Mass and Polesʼ engagement in spiritual life during the pandemic.

In this article, the Author portrait Facebook as a means of communication and signals the aggravating religious situation of Catholic Church in Poland. Studies conducted among group of students belonging to one parish community were to show if Facebook is still a popular tool for young adults. They were also to check, to what degree it is still necessary in pastoral work. For this purpose, the author conducted qualitative research using unstructured interview method.
W artykule została nakreśliła rola Facebooka jako narzędzia komunikacji oraz pogarszająca się sytuacja religijna Kościoła w Polsce. Podjęte badanie na grupie studentów skupionych w jednej wspólnocie parafialnej pokazują, czy Facebook jest nadal popularnym narzędziem wśród młodych dorosłych oraz weryfikują to, w jakim stopniu jest on narzędziem potrzebnym w duszpasterstwie parafialnym. W tym celu zostały zaprezentowane badania jakościowe przeprowadzone metodą wywiadu swobodnego.

Exercise of the Godʼs Mercy in Caritas activity is a charity service based on the Godʼs commandment of love, appropriate to needs of people who suffer financial or spiritual poverty, aimed at bringing help in living decent quality of life. The motive for activity and the charity service comes out of the commandment of the love to a neighbor and desire for imitating the Christ (Luke 10, 30-36). Service to poor and suffering people is an evidence of faithfulnesses to the Gospel and is a continuation of the rich charity tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Concern about the poor and needing people carried on in the organized and scheduled way exemplifies the solidarity in the Christ with the poor people.

Caring about the poor and people in need has always been and should re-main the domain of the Church activity and the characteristic of a Christian. In the Diocese of Ełk, the Caritas is the main ecclesiastical institution for the as-sistance of the poor. Its mission is to provide people in difficult situations with spiritual and material assistance. The article makes a presentation of the Ełk Caritas’ establishment and legal basis, objectives and tasks, organizational structures, brief timetable, as well as of selected Caritas posts and their forms of activity. In the Ełk Church, providing charitable service has always been a current pastoral challenge. The Ełk Caritas, following Pope Francis’ call, goes to the periphery of poverty to carry the light of the Gospel there.
