Opis:
The writings of the saints speak against self-love as a hindrance to friendship with God, while Aristotle speaks of self-love as the basis for virtuous friendship. What causes this apparent discrepancy? Not only is there a difference between good and bad self-love, such that bad self-love must be eradicated, but there is also the cessation of the act of good self-love as the soul progresses spiritually. Then only the love for God remains in act within the perfection of charity and Union with God.

Opis:
The author considers a possible dialogue between Saint Thomas Aquinas and representatives of the New Atheism. His interest focuses on the controversy about the existence of God. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part the author presents main claims of the doctrine of the New Atheism. In the sec-ond he shows different conceptions of mind (reason) and rationality. In the last he presents Saint Thomas’ conception of rationality based on his metaphysical system. Undertaken considerations lead to a conclusion that the correct concep-tion of mind (reason) is a possible starting point in possible discussion with the New Atheism.

Opis:
In his article the Author deliberates on non-metaphysical arguments for the existence of God in the doctrine of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The author presents problems of pre-philosophical cognition of the existence of Good, such as the cognition through religious faith and through religious experience. The basic purpose of the text is to give an answer to the question: do the non-metaphysical arguments for the existence of God confirm theistic theses? In the light of Saint Thomas’ doctrine the answer to such a question must be negative.

Theology as a science draws material from various sources. There are those having their basis on the authority (the Bible and sacred tradition), ‘signs of the times’, humanities and natural sciences. Among them it is the natural science that is a flashpoint of different disputes arising between theology and natural sciences. Nevertheless, one is not allowed to reject natural sciences since they mould a human perception of the world. The aim of the article is to present the use of the levels of complexity having their roots in natural sciences in the Fourth Way of Saint Aquinas. Hierarchical levels of reality are a common element of these two concepts. There will also be made an attempt to update the argument.

Opis:
This article defends the thesis that, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, when the Ancient Greeks and other Mediterranean cultures prior to them had first started to philosophize, engage in science, they had done so as parts of an individual and community team enterprise. They were convinced that all human beings have a moral duty as rational animals to philosophize—prudentially to wonder about the most universal causes about everything. Considering themselves essentially to be a ‘world-community of prudential wonderers’, they first conceived of philosophy, science, to be a psychological act of prudential wondering practiced by a world-wide community of people. In starting this organization, this world community shared a common, prudent chief aim: to help free the entire known-world from the damaging effects they had commonly recognized brute-animal ignorance causes. They were convinced that an imprudent people can never become philosophical or scientific. St. Thomas maintains that their natural desire to satisfy their wonder about the chief subject, aim, efficient and final cause of the existence, behavior, and truth of everything must have included understanding God. Having this included as part of its chief subject and aim caused them to understand the job of every philosopher chiefly to be what philosophy is for anyone who understands its proper nature: to bring into existence First Philosophy, Metaphysics’—‘the most divine and honorable science’!

Opis:
Article devoted to symposiums in honor of St. Thomas Aquinas at the Theological Seminary in Ełk, which were organized in 2013-2023, aims to demonstrate whether and to what extent the postulates (six in number) formulated by the organizers were implemented. The text contains the programs of all ten symposiums. On their basis, data regarding the presented topics, speakers, scientific communities, dates and organizers were compiled. Based on the collected data, conclusions were formulated regarding each of the assumptions. It turned out that all of them were implemented. Some of them to a greater extent than others. The assumption regarding the celebration of Thomas Aquinas Day has been largely implemented, as has the assumption regarding the teaching mission of the Church and the implementation of the postulates contained in the formation documents. The assumption of revitalizing and integrating the scientific community at the WSD in Ełk, as well as the idea of promoting it, was achieved to a small extent.

Opis:
The purpose of the article is to show the relationships between the concept of will and understanding of faith. It is about demonstrating that the adopted concept of the will affects the understanding of faith. Selected concepts of will (realistic, a priori, positivist) were presented in terms of their pursuit of God. When it turns out that God is the object of the will, faith acquires a natural foundation. This means that the will that naturally reaches God comes into a relationship with Him even before faith develops. Consequently, it must be recognized that there is a natural and moral foundation for faith. This kindof foundation exists on the basis of a realistic concept of will. In a priori morality, due to the concept of the will, only moral faith is possible. Positivist philosophy replaces the will with social feelings. That is why faith is understood as trust and is only natural.

Opis:
Akrasia or “moral weakness” involves acting contrary to what one normally believes to be the best or right course of action. I begin by offering a general definition of akrasia to cover all instances of the phenomenon. I then argue that there are two varieties of akrasia that fall under this general definition. The first, which I call “Greek akrasia,” involves a failure of belief at the moment of action, whereas the second, which I call “Augustinian akrasia,” involves a failure of will. The crux of the matter is whether one maintains one’s ordinary belief about the right thing to do at the moment of action and yet wills to act contrary to that belief, or whether one’s beliefs shift around such that they are obscured or misconstrued at the moment of action.
