Opis:
The paper presents results of estimation of Cox proportional hazard model developed in order to identify the importance of employment for a first and a second childbirth for Polish women born in 1960 and after. The analysis is based on data from the first wave of the Generations and Gender Survey GGS-PL. The results show: a) positive and statistically significant effect of employment on the risk of having a first and a second child, b) negative, although weak impact of the length of statutory maternity leave on the risk of having a second child. The results cast in doubt the effectiveness of the new reform that introduces the possibility of taking longer maternity leaves in order to boost fertility.

Opis:
Given the scale and pace of post-EU accession migrations from Poland, as well as age and gender structure of their participants, an increased interest in family behaviour and intentions of this group has been recently noted. The observed interrelations between migration and family building processes are multidimensional. Thus, this study aims to investigate interrelations between migration, childbearing decisions and intentions of Polish female migrants in Norway. The paper is based on a survey research conducted among Polish female migrants in 2014–2015. The results show that majority of immigrants was childless upon arrival. For those, who had a child before migration, the mobility occurred in a relatively early stage of family formation process. However, a concentration of births shortly after migration can be observed. This concerns mostly women migrating to join their husbands or partners. An opposite evidence is observed regarding respondents who had one child upon arrival to Norway – only few of them proceeded to the second birth. Almost 58% of respondents wants to give birth to their next child in Norway. More importantly, majority of women planning a long-term stay in Norway still has positive or uncertain childbearing intentions.

Opis:
Since 1950s, the non-marital birth rate has been relatively high in the northern and western Poland, and relatively low in the south of the country. A remarkable increase in the percentage of non-marital births, observed after 1989 and especially in the recent decade did not change this spatial pattern. This article aims to quantify the spatial differentiation of the non-marital birth rate in recent years, between 2002 and 2010. It also attempts to verify three hypotheses, which try to explain the reasons behind the spatial pattern of non-marital childbearing from three different perspectives: the opportunity cost theory, the theory of anomie and historical trauma, and the theory of social influence. The analyses have been conducted on the NUTS-4 level (the Polish powiats) using the standard OLS regression models and the spatial autoregressive models: the spatial lag models and the spatial error models. The results of the multiple models suggest that the spatial pattern of non-marital childbearing can be attributed to social influence and historical trauma rather than to opportunity cost. However, the conclusions are tentative. The subject needs further studies.
