Opis:
The article looks at the origins and scale of migration of Poles to the Republic of Ireland and the characteristics of migrants in light of various statistical data. It outlines the characteristics of the Polish population in Ireland on the basis of 2016 census, taking into account the main directions of changes in relation to previous censuses. Polish immigrants, very few in Ireland before 2004, have since become the largest group of non-Irish nationals, stable in size and spread all over the country. Despite its size and multiple ties to Ireland such as the growing number of Polish-Irish citizens and the increasing share of homeowners, it is argued that the Polish community has limited visibility and impact on the Irish society and politics. The author also points out the housing crisis and Brexit-related risks as important challenges for the Polish community.

The aim of the article is to assess the level of pension security and retirement readiness of young adults (under 30) in Poland. The forms of supplementary pension security used by young adults were analysed, and the level of their participation in supplementary pension plans was examined. Following the introduction, the first section presents the architecture of the old-age pension system in Poland. The second section focuses on young people’s participation level in supplementary pension plans and their savings goals. The next section presents the results of the research on the financial goals and adequacy of respondents’ retirement planning based on OECD/INFE survey data. The last part discusses and concludes the results of the study. The survey found that young adults are not taking enough action to reduce the expected retirement gap and are more likely to set financial goals and be more optimistic about their retirement planning than older adults. They are more likely to rely on their own savings and supplementary retirement security, which, however, is not supported by data on the level of participation in supplementary retirement plans. Only one in five young adults intends to continue working past retirement age.

The aim of the paper is to discuss the socio‑economic effects of the international migration of Poles in light of their careers. The analysis is based on quantitative comprehensive data extracted from both public statistics and dedicated local surveys drawn from local communities with high density of migration, as well as from qualitative studies devoted to occupational biographies and social remittances of migrants. The author shows differentiations of occupational careers of migrants and sedentary local populations, and various profiles of transitions from the Polish education to the foreign labour market. She also seeks an answer to the question what Polish migrants bring from migration beyond money, and how migration impacts human capital.

The paper offers an insight into Polish migrants’ perceptions of the English education system and how these may impact on their future migration decisions. The study is based on interviews with Polish parents living in England. First, the author discusses the English education system and explains how disparate it is from the Polish one. Next, Polish migrants’ perceptions of the English education system are discussed. The Polish system is described as promoting higher academic standards, more discipline and a stronger work ethic. In the final section, the author argues that differences between the two systems complicate the issue of prospective return, with many parents fearing their children would not be able to (re‑) enter the Polish education system. Therefore, to Polish parents living in England schooling is a significant factor in making decisions regarding settlement in the UK.

The aim of the article is to discuss the importance of formal and informal sources of retirement security of Poles in the face of current economic, social and demographic changes. Formal sources are understood as the institutional pension security (regulated by law), while the informal source will be primarily considered to be family support (the so-called natural pension security). Following the introduction, the first section shows demographic trends in Poland and refers to pension security from the public pension system. The second section presents data sources and research methods used in the article. The third section shows the results of research on planned protection in old age. The fourth part discusses and concludes the results of the study. The research shows that not many Poles save for old age, counting on the support of the state and children.
