The RPG game. The textual paragraph game. The gamebook. The very names of these genres suggest their literary origin. No wonder, since many of them, particularly the RPG games, derive from the classics of fantasy (Middle Earth based on Tolkien’s fiction), s-f (Cyberpunk 2020, largely inspired by the novels of William Gibson and Philip K. Dick) or gothic horror (The Call of Cthulhu based on H.P. Lovecraft). That select company has been recently joined by Bałwochwał by Mariusz Pisarski and Marcin Bylak, inspired by the short stories of Bruno Schulz.

Opis:
Joseph saw Bianca for the first time when “she was wearing a white dress, slender and calligraphic as if the had been out of the Zodiac.” Then he had no way out – he could not stop dreaming about meeting her once more. His dreams came true but not as a typical love story, but the moment when one says “the sweetest, quietest, and saddest things” and after that there is no consolation but the falling dusk. Joseph begins to study Bianca’s secret with insistence and despair, and his effort resembles studying a spring dusk. Who was Bianca and what is this dusk which falls inevitably whenever she starts talking about something most important? This is the basic question to which Joseph tries to find an answer. She was an Infant Queen and the Messiah at the same time. And both aspects Joseph almost managed to prove or at least acquire faith in their existence realized in terms of abduction and suffering. But Bianca was also a Woman who realized “fully” only her female aspect. That aspect of her Joseph could neither predict or fully understand. He could not bear it or defeat it in the realms “above and beneath” Bianca’s flesh. The Woman won in her and that victory liberated a Demon which brought Joseph to madness, his highest idea to total bankruptcy, and his love to incessantly falling dusk. Joseph never experienced the erotic womanhood of Bianca, but he experienced its demonism. He failed to revive in her the Infant Queen and the Messiah – she made her own choice.

Opis:
How to write about the Quay Brothers, their films, drawings frozen in frames, the spaces formed in theatrical, ballet, and opera settings? Should one explain, analyze, replace images with words? Is it fair to “blur the picture,” as it often happens with the works of Bruno Schulz read by critics? The essay does not provide answers to these questions, but reconstructs a certain course of events, their traces, and consequences. Since the author has known the Quay Brothers in person, she can search for phenomena hidden under the surface of the visible. She tells the reader about what she has learned from many conversations with the Brothers, enjoying an unusual symbiotic relationship with them, contributing to their films and a book.

Opis:
The full title of Michał Paweł Markowski’s book includes four elements: Universal Promiscuity. Schulz, Existence, Literature. Also the list of contents has four segments. The term “existence,” used both in the title and in the list of contents, reveals the author’s emphasis. Markowski remembers Walter Benjamin’s dream of writing a book made exclusively of quotations and uses a similar method. His point is to show a close connection between the “key idea of Schulz’s world” and “Schulz’s language.” Markowski claims, “The present book is about Schulz and about his own existence inscribed in literature which has become an existence of the second degree.” By “bio-graphy” he understands “existential analysis” and in this respect his book is about “Schulz as a philosopher” and the “philosophy of Schulz.” The composition of the book corresponds to its title – it includes a large number of mostly very short chapters of which the reader has not been informed in advance. That is why the present review contains a necessary supplement.

Opis:
The paper is a comparative study of two poems by Jerzy Ficowski in memory of Bruno Schulz. Cliché-verre [glass printing plate cast] is a special technique used by the author of The Cinnamon Shops in his Booke of Idolatry, unprecedented in the history of Polish graphic art. As an interpretation formula, it enables to track the poetic creation of the figure of Schulz from a disportrait (a negative exposition of his strong absence) to an apocryph (an expressive reconstruction, and, more specifically, re-creation of the artist beginning his artistic journey, presented in a light of a biographical context). The paper discusses the main connections between the works of both authors, philosophical assumptions of the master implemented by Ficowski, analogous mythological constructions, and references to the Jewish Kabbalah focused on the main motif of the Book.
