Opis:
The Monastery in Poznań was founded in 1607 by Magdalena Mortęska - the reformer of the Benedictine Order. By analysing the monastic cornicles, the author wanted to show the influence of extra-ordinary events in Greater Poland and Poznan in 17th and 18th Century on life of enclosed nuns. The article describes what changed when people visited the monastery, what life of nuns looked like during epidemics, floods and other disasters that took place in Greater Poland. The influence of wars and quartering foreign armies in the city of Poznan on life of nuns in the Benedictine Monastery was also included.

The article also contains information describing the school run in a convent for young ladies from the surrounding area, and further afield. Girls stayed for a few years or a few weeks, as there was no fixed curriculum, specifying the number of months or years of education. The Article also contains two tables: novices joining the Norbertine nunnery in Imbramowie in years 1703-1741 and girls living in the monastery and attending to convent school in the same range of years.

Opis:
From the very beginning of its existence, the Pauline Order paid attention to the need to educate and develop the intellectual life of its members. This resulted from the adoption of St. Augustine’s rule by the community, which in addition to the principles governing the common life also emphasized the intellectual formation of the friars by providing them with access to books. The fulfilment of the obligations resulting from the rule and the subsequent legislation of the convent meant that every Pauline monastery was equipped with a larger or smaller library. It was no different in the case of St. Martin's convent in Oporów, which had existed since 1453 thanks to the foundation of the brothers Piotr and Władysław from the powerful Oporowski family, with the Sulima coat of arms. The monastery library was probably established soon after the foundation of the monastery. It was used primarily by preachers, who prepared Sunday and Christmas sermons, as well as by other monks, if they were authorized to do so. The beginnings of the library are unknown due to the lack of sources from that period. Only the eighteenth-century catalogues of books shed light on the functioning of the library, albeit in a limited period of time 1711-1753. To this day, 13 library inventories have survived, providing welcome information about the intellectual life of the local Pauline monks, titles of books along with the names of the authors and the division of bibliographic material into various thematic categories. The image of the Oporów library is complemented by 47 old prints of Oporów provenience, which are now the property of the University Library in Warsaw. Although their number is insignificant and constitutes only a fraction of the former assets of the library, nevertheless it turns out to be helpful in the analysis of the resources of the Pauline library and the development of intellectual horizons of its users. The analysis of the preserved archival materials is the first attempt to restore the library of the Oporów monastery in the century preceding its irretrievable disappearance in the course of the convent’s annulment.

The first historically confirmed records of the library of Szczyrzyc monastery are from the time of abbot Joahim I Cieniawski (1592-1607). Among the 40 titles of books recorded during the visitation in 1597 was: six antiphonals, eight missals, five psalters, four graduals, two copies of the Bible, homiliarz, kolektarz, the life of St. Stanislaus bishop and martyr, the St. Benedict’s rule and also Liber Definitorum, which is the book of the resolution of the General Chapters of the Cistercian. The first catalogue of books was made in 1755 and was entitled Cathalogus librorum Monasterij Ciricensis iuxta alphabetum authorum mense Augusto Anno Domini 1755. Conscriptus. It is a pity that only two initials cards including a list of books within the letter “A” were preserved until modern times. Three nineteenth century inventories provide full knowledge about this collection of books taking into account the title of a book, the author’s name, the description of a book (place and year of publication) and format of a book. The person who wrote the book made their thematic segregation. Undoubtedly the number of books, titles and in particular the authors demonstrate the need and the importance which the Szczyrzyc monastery given to the books which reading had to help the monk in his pilgrimage to God.

The oldest book which was on the territory of the early Piast in the second half of the tenth century derived, comes from the Benedictine scriptoria from the area of Bavaria, Saxony, Rhineland and Lorraine and contained the biblical texts and established liturgical canon necessary for the celebration of the Mass. Preserved from the twelfth century regulations of Cistercian chapters which decided that in each monastery there should be: missal, epistolary, Gospel Book, gradual, antiphonary, liber hymnarius, psaltery, lectionary and calendar. These regulations made the copywriter’s work particularly important. The importance attributed to their work is attested to, for example, by their release by the General Chapter of the Order from other duties in favor of the monastery, and by the permission in some cases to work at night. In Cistercian scriptoria apart from copying of the liturgical texts, the memorials so-called libri virorum et mortuorum, there were preparing documents for the current administrative and economic work of the monastery; in addition there were writing yearbooks, obituaries, monastery chronicles or epitaphs poem. There were recording notes of daily life outside the walls of the enclosure, names and functions of friars particularly events that took place away from the monastery or notes about elementary disasters happening in the proximate areas, the damages of monastery caused by floods, fires or epidemics. The preserved manuscript codes are an priceless source for learning the minds, interpersonal relationships prevailing in the small communities, their relations with their nearest surrounding and medieval way of seeing the world.

The article describes illness and death behind the walls of the convent of the Norbertine in Ibramowice in light of The Chronicle Sophia Grothówna from the years 1703-1741. Health problems and death in human life are two inevitable events. As a people we know this is unavoidable and we will meet every existence. Sisters of Mary also were afflicted with minor or major health problems. The nuns lived in damp conditions. At the monastery Imbramowice flows flows the river Dłubnia, causing a humid environment. Nuns in Imbramowice had to contend with difficult housing conditions after a fire in 1710. Norbertine's coped with the diseases in various ways:leaving for treatment to spas (with the consent of the bishop and the abbess), or waiting for assistance of a barber, doctors came less frequently. The article contains also diseases to which the sisters suffered. In the second part, the paper describes the death of sisters and everything that is associated with it. Every act of dying featured in the pages of The Chronicle abbes Grothówna was dramatic. After the death of a Norbertine followed by a funeral, if the nun exercised a high function at the monastery burial was very solemn and distinguished guests arrived. The Sisters of Mary also organized refreshments for the poor people, to help the dead and prayed for a specified period of time. The article includes a list of all the sisters residing at the monastery in Imbramowice over the years 1703-1741. The table presents information: date of commencement of the novitiate, professed, perpetual function each nun and date of death.

Opis:
Many of the marks of ownership were included in the inventory of the Library of the Cistercian Monastery in Trzebnica. Owners and history of individual book are known to us thanks to the provenience notes which Helena Szwejkowska recorded in her catalogue. The author of the abovementioned work gathered all provenience notes into a few groups, which allowed us to see how the book collection was growing. That was possible because of buying books and people who decided to give their books to the monastery library. Although it was forbidden, a lot of nuns were in private possession of books and when they died their books become part of library in Trzebnica. Abbesses of the monastery in Trzebnica were also listed in Szwejkowska’s catalogue as book’s owners. By provenience notes we can also see the connections between the monastery in Trzebnica and other Cistercian monasteries in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth eg. Lubiąż, Jemielnica, Przemęt. Also there was an exchange of books between Trzebnica and it’s branch in Owińska. Many of the books were brought to Trzebnica by priests who were confessors and sermonizers to Cistercian nuns. There are evidences that some of the books were brought to the monastery in Trzebnica by Eugeniusz Lenga (who later was an abbot in Jemielnica) and Benedykt Cieszkont (who used to be the confessor in Trzebnica). Kasper from Przemęt has to be mentioned as the one who brought some of the manuscripts. A lot of highly valuable information can be read by historians from margin notes and other marks that were written on the pages of books in the library in Trzebnica. Especially important are provenience marks from the period of the dissolution of the monastery when all the precious books were removed from Trzebnica by Johann Gustaw Büsching.

The article describes the echoes of events from the outside world in an enclosed Norbertine convent in Imbramowice and is mainly based on records taken from The Chronicle of Sophia Grothówna from the years 1703-1741. Although the Norbertine monastery was (and still is) enclosed, it maintained communications with the outside world on a regular basis but unwillingly. This article discusses just such situations. Sisters had to contend with numerous military invasions, requesting ever larger contributions and looting the surroundings belonging to the nuns’ granges. During the wars of the seventeenth century a number of plague broke out, which reached the surrounding areas in Imbarmowice. The peasants contracted the plague from the army. In other events, there were the outbreak of fires, the largest broke out in 1704, and many sisters had to leave the monastery and move to other monasteries or return to their homes. The reconstruction of the monastery took almost 20 years. The article describes information about the floods, strong winds, hunger, cold and drought that ravaged the monastery and caused major damage in convent farms.

Zgon gwardiana zapoczątkował proces faktycznej kasaty klasztoru. Po kilku latach (1839 r.) poklasztorne zabudowania przejęła szamotulska parafia katolicka.
The paper discusses the process of the secularisation of the Reformed Franciscan monastery in Szamotuły. The monastery was founded at the end of the 17th century by the then owner of the town Jan Korzbok Łącki. The founder settled the monks in the remains of the former castle and built for them a church dedicated to St. Cross. The convent operated until the death of the last guardian, who died in February 1832. After a few years (1839), the former monastic buildings were taken over by the Catholic parish in Szamotuły.

The cloister of Cistercians in Henryków possesses the complex founding traditions, both monastic and secular. The most complete vision of the origins of the monastery in Henryków gives us the Book of Henryków. The Book of Henryków delivers quite a complicated picture of the foundation. In the foundation of the cloister as many as three persons took part: the notary Nicholas, prince Henry the Bearded and Henry the Pious. According to the author of the first part of the Book of Henryków, the prince Henry the Pious was the only founder of the cloister. The analysis of late medieval and renaissance chronicles give us a quite different picture of its foundation. There are two leading concepts. The first sustained thesis of princely foundations. Its originator was Peter of Byczyna the author of the Chronica Principium Poloniae. The second concept was created by Jan Dlugosz, who ascribed the foundation of Henryków to the notary Nicholas.

Niejednokrotnie były to ośrodki powiązane z klasztorem jędrzejowskim.
The article presents the history of the Cistercians of Jędrzejów after the dissolution of the abbey in 1819. In the first stage of the research, a biographical index was prepared, which was used to analyze the social and territorial origin as well as the numerical and age structure of the monks. The primary source material were general and personal files of the clergy, diocesan and monastic schematisms, as well as parish files and record books. After the suppression of the abbey, some of the monks stayed in the monastery buildings, others went to parish work. These were often centers associated with the Jędrzejów monastery.

Wówczas to metropolita kijowski Nikifor I, na polecenie księcia Świętopełka i prośby ówczesnego ihumena klasztoru peczerskiego Teoktysta, wpisał imię Teodozego do Syondyku, oficjalnie zaliczając go do grona świętych Kościoła Rusi Kijowskiej.
The article depicts the circumstances of the origin of the cult of St. Theodosius, ihumen of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery. The text analyzes the preserved sources (The Tale of Bygone Years, The Kie- Pechersk Patericon) concerning the events of the translation of Theodosius' remains to the monastery church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, which, in the opinion of many researchers, gave rise to the cult of the saint. The examination of this issue allows for a thesis that the events of 1091 could have resulted from prosaic reasons – the right of ihumen to be buried in the monastery church as well as the fact that he was one of the initiators of the construction of the temple. The textological observations also make it possible to question the chronology of events related to the formation of the cult of Theodosius, as presented in the Tale of Bygone Years, which was based on the Life of St. Theodore the Studite, as can be assumed. The beginning of the cult of St. Theodosius was associated with cultural changes, whose first symptoms can be observed in Ruthenia in the first decade of the 12th century. At that time, the Metropolitan of Kiev, Nikifor I, entered the name of Theodosius in Sinodik, officially including him among the saints of the Church of Kievan Rus.
