Opis:
Studies of other people’s personality trait perception have been of marginal significance in the psychology of personality. Such studies usually use tools developed specifically for self-rating research. Similar studies in social psychology are limited to a high level of abstraction. On the basis of earlier Polish peer-rating psycholexical studies, a six-factor structure of dispositional adjectives has been observed, different from the structure obtained in self-rating studies. The purpose of the current study was to construct scales enabling the measurement of the adjective markers of Polish lexical personality traits based on the Big Six in a peer-rating study. Another purpose was to examine the psychometric properties of the constructed scales and identify the most important correlates. The participants were 383 people, with age ranging from 16 to 83 years. The constructed 48-adjective list allows to measure the axial traits of the Polish lexicon: Agreeableness, Impulsiveness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Resilience, and Intellect. Coefficients of internal consistency and stability reached satisfactory values.

Opis:
The article is an introduction to the volume devoted to personality traits and their measurement. It consists of two parts. The first part presents two research traditions that use the taxonomy of five personality traits: the lexical tradition (using the term “Big Five”) and the psychometric tradition (using the term “Five-Factor Model of Personality”). Similarities and differences between these traditions are outlined and the basic elements of other models that have appeared in recent studies – such as the Big Six or the Big Two – are introduced in it. The second part of the paper presents selected issues of measurement, discussed in detail in several texts included in the current issue of Annals of Psychology. Special attention is drawn to differences between various questionnaires in the operationalization of the five traits as well as to the growing popularity of short scales for measuring personality traits. The paper also outlines problems involved in the measurement of personality traits and the psychometric instruments used.

Opis:
The paper presents the Polish adaptation of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI-P), which is designed to measure five dimensions of personality as described in the Big Five model. The items were translated into Polish from the original English version. The equivalence of the two versions was confirmed in a study conducted on a sample of bilingual students. A series of four independent studies (on a total sample of over 500 students) were conducted to verify the psychometric properties of the Polish version of TIPI. They proved acceptable test-retest reliability of TIPI-P after two weeks. As in the original version of the inventory, the internal consistency coefficients are relatively low. Correlations between TIPI-P and NEO-FFI as well as between self-rating and peer-rating confirm the convergent and discriminant validity of TIPI-P scales. The results of the studies suggest that the Polish adaptation can be used in scientific research conducted on student samples.

Opis:
W prezentowanym projekcie badawczym poszukiwano odpowiedzi na pytanie o zakres i stopień współzależności pomiędzy kompetencjami temporalnymi (ujmowanymi Kwestionariuszem Kompetencji Temporalnych Z. Uchnasta i K. Tucholskiej) a wybranymi wymiarami osobowości, mierzonymi: Kwestionariuszem Poczucia Koherencji SOC-29 A. Antonovsky’ego, Testem Przymiotnikowym ACL H. G. Gougha i A. B. Heilbruna oraz Inwentarzem Osobowości NEO-PI-R P. T. Costy i R. R. McCrae. Zgromadzone w toku badań wyniki 239-osobowej grupy studentów poddano analizie korelacji kanonicznej. Przeprowadzone analizy dały postawy do dokładnego określenia osobowościowych korelatów kompetencji w przeżywaniu czasu. W świetle prezentowanych badań kompetencje temporalne okazują się zmienną istotną dla diagnozowania adekwatności funkcjonowania i skuteczności działania jednostki.
The objective of research was to establish the range of interdependence between temporal competence (as measured by Temporal Competence Inventory developed by Uchnast and Tucholska) and selected psychological variables measured by Questionnaire of the Sense of Coherence (SOC-29) developed by Antonovsky, Adjective Check List (ACL) by H. G. Gough and A. B. Heilbrun, Revised NEO Personality Inventory developed by P T. Costa and R. R. McCrae. The procedure of canonical analysis was used to analyze the data collected during the study from a group of 239 students. It follows from the presented analyses that the way of experiencing time and the person’s attitude to time in its three dimensions remain in evident linkage to intrapsychic and interpersonal functioning. Therefore, temporal competences can be treated as predictors of efficient and adequate functioning.

Opis:
The article presents the Polish adaptation of Goldberg’s IPIP-BFM-50 questionnaire for measuring the five personality traits in the lexical tradition (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Intellect). The adaptation procedure was carried out as a series of eight studies. Analyses were performed on a total of N = 7015 people aged from 10 to 83 (their mean age was 29 years). Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Factorial validity was verified in confirmatory factor analysis. In multigroup confirmatory factor analysis, measurement invariance between various research situations was verified. External validity was assessed by comparing the scores obtained using the IPIP-BFM-50 with NEO-FFI and NEO-PI-R scores. The results support the conclusion that the IPIP-BFM-50 is a measure with satisfactory psychometric properties, fit for use in scientific research.

Opis:
Power in organizations creates interpersonal settings and lays the ground for designating individual roles and positions of superiors and subordinates. In such a context, influence tactics are situation-specific behaviors used to change the behavior of others and achieve organizational goals. The notion that power and influence can be based on personal or positional variables was used to design the framework of the present studies intended to describe how trait- and state-like variables are related to influence tactics and deinfluentization. The subjects were 250 Polish managers. Study 1 (n = 250) was undertaken to collect data about the influence tactics of Polish managers to fill the void in information in the field of social psychology in organizations. In Study 2 (n = 104) we correlated influence tactics with the personal sense of power. The results proved that the perception of having the ability to exert power over others was positively related to rational persuasion, apprising, and pressure. In Study 3 (n = 69) we investigated the relationships of influence tactics and deinfluentization with the Big Five and directiveness. The results showed that Neuroticism was positively correlated with pressure, legitimating, and coalition, but negatively with rational persuasion and consultation. Extraversion was positively correlated with rational persuasion, so was Conscientiousness. Agreeableness was negatively related to coalition. Directiveness was in a positive relation with pressure but correlated negatively with personal appeals. Deinfluentization positively correlated with Agreeableness and negatively with directiveness.

Opis:
The most frequently used measures of personality consist of a large number of items. However, it is their short versions that have enjoyed popularity in recent years. This article is a presentation of the short form of Goldberg’s questionnaire for measuring the Big Five personality traits. The questionnaire measures five traits (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Intellect), and consists of 20 items. It is a shortened version of the 50-item Big Five Markers questionnaire from the resources of the International Personality Item Pool, whose Polish version was prepared by Strus, Cieciuch, and Rowiński (2014b). In constructing the short version, we followed the procedure developed by Donnellan and colleagues (2006), aimed at maximizing the internal consistency and independence of scales. The research was carried out on a group of N = 903 people aged between 16 and 83 years. The validity (verified in confirmatory factor analysis and in the analysis of correlations between the questionnaire’s scales and other measures of the five personality traits) and reliability (measured by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient) are satisfactory and make the questionnaire fit for use in scientific research.

Opis:
This article presents a preliminary study of links between personal constructs and traits. The conceptual framework for this study is the domains of personality model postulated by McAdams (1995) and McAdams & Pals (2006), and we tried to find concomitances between variables of two different levels, the dispositional level and the identity level. A repertory grid and the NEOFFI inventory were distributed to a total of 273 individuals, 146 representing the general population, and 137 having pathologies. By applying an exploratory design ex post facto in which Pearson’s correlations and ANOVAs were used, we found associations between the content of the constructs used and the traits. The neuroticism trait was most closely related to the content of the constructs. There were also clear associations between construct structure and scores on traits. Neurotic subjects were more rigid, whereas agreeable and conscientious subjects were more complex. However, the type of sample (normal or pathological) is a basic modulator of the relationships between constructs and traits.
