    Opis:
    The article in a multidimensional way presents the process of social, economic and cultural integration of immigrants settling permanently of temporarily in several countries of the European Union. It discusses the determinants of the influx of immigrants during World War II as well as the specific character of their integration in Great Britain, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, Holland and France. It indicates the main assumptions of the integration concept in those countries and the practical ways of their implementation with respect to two main categories of immigrants: newcomers from outside Europe (especially from African and Asian countries) and labor migrants from the twelve new member states of the European Union who came to Western European countries after the enlargement of the EU in 2004 and 2007. The article presents the causes of failure, with respect to the immigrants with culture quite different from European, of the conception of multiculturalism that was for a long time considered the model solution to the problem of integration, and it stresses the dimension of economic integration as the dominant one among labor migrants from the Middle and Eastern Europe.

    The paper is a sociological-political attempt to analyze the problems of multiculturalism, especially the rights to preserve one's own culture within the dominating one, as it takes place in Australia. The author pinpoints that Australian achievements as regards the principles of multiculturalism and human rights surpass many other countries with pluralistic systems. This is true especially from the time when Aborigines were granted political rights. Concerning Australia, the questions in the paper may inspire the research on other multinational and multicultural societies.

    The paper is a sociological attempt to analyze ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism should not be treated as an embarrassing issue. It makes up inevitable barrier to communication between different cultures. Its representatives ought to be aware of it and do their best to minimalize its negative symptomps that are the reason for numerous contemporary conflicts. We can head them off by promoting direct, interpersonal relations and reflective communication. In prospect of European co-operation this topic is particularly important because it marks the common ground and proposition of safe and satysfying relations. Lifting ethnocentric barrier to communication by implementing competence into the process of intercultural education should turn out to be helpful in dally realization of multicultural society also in Europe. Negative signs of ethnocentrism are avoidable but, as proved above, we need to start this process very early by promoting the idea of tolerance and open dialog as soon as possible.

    The paper analyses the problem of ethnicity with respect to globalising processes ongoing in contemporary societies. The author puts forward a thesis that there is an influence of global interculturalism that transcends national ties and crossing over cultural borders. The course of these phenomena is analysed within the context of the circumstances of the Australian state. A particular stress is laid on the issue of building a multicultural nation by the multiethnic society of Australia. This multicultural nation is a new value. At the same time the paper depicts achievements and failures in the multicultural policy assumed and carried out in this country.

    Współczesny świat jest opisywany między innymi przez zjawisko wielokulturowości. To świat przenikania się różnych kultur w konkretnej przestrzeni społecznej będący wynikiem rewolucji migracyjnej. W tym kontekście powstaje pytanie o relacje między wielokulturowością a kapitałem społecznym, czyli siecią kontaktów między ludźmi, a przede wszystkim takich wartości, jak zaufanie i dialog społeczny. Jak wielokulturowość zmienia społeczny kapitał? Z jednej strony mamy negatywny obraz wycofywania się imigrantów z życia społecznego, izolacji i zjawisko gettoizacji. Taki kontekst nie wzmacnia społecznego kapitału. Z drugiej – wzrost tolerancji, dobry dialog społeczny i umiejętność włączania imigrantów do głównego nurtu życia społecznego. To kontekst sprzyjający silnemu kapitałowi społecznemu. Współczesny świat stawia wiele nowych wyzwań i wymaga socjologicznej analizy, której początki prezentujemy w niniejszym artykule.
    The modern world is described among others by multicultural phenomenon. It is the world which penetrates different cultures in the social space. The cultures came here by immigration revolution in the world. In this context arises a question about the relation between multiculturalism and social capital, or networks contact among people and above all values like trust and social dialogue. How has social capital been changed by multiculturalism? On the one hand, we have negative pictures for example withdrawal of immigrants from social life, isolation and gettoization. This context doesn't strengthen the social capital. On the other hand, growth rise of tolerance, good social dialogue and including immigrants in to the mainstream of social life. The modern world sets a lot of new challenges and demands a sociological analysis, the beginnings of which we presents in this article.
