The author's main area of reflection is location (place) identity. The processes of constructing and subsequent cultivating of one’s loyalty to the place and one’s identification with it rely on two psychological mechanisms: the need for belonging and social identity. Regional identity, which marks the foundation of the activity of regional organizations, is a special kind of social identity. The article focuses on how the relationship between regional and national identity is built in the communications and activity of regional organizations. The author suggests her own unique classification of strategies: regional autonomy, national and regional dichotomy and the national dominant.

Celem artykułu jest próba reinterpretacji pojęcia tożsamości pogranicza jako kategorii socjologii pogranicza. Przedstawiona koncepcja, w nawiązaniu do istoty tożsamości oraz pogranicza, uwzględnia łącznie zarówno tożsamość większości, jak i mniejszości kulturowych zamieszkujących na pograniczach. Została tak przedstawiona, aby mogła mieć zastosowanie do realizacji badań empirycznych. W zakończeniu Autor wyróżnił trzy typy tożsamości zbiorowych, określanych jako tożsamości pogranicza: tożsamość wiążącą, tożsamość pograniczną oraz tożsamość intergraniczną.
The aim of the article is an attempt to reinterpret the concept of borderland identity as a category of borderland sociology. The presented concept, in reference to the essence of the identity and the borderland, takes into account both the identity of the majority as well as cultural minorities living on the borderlands. It has been presented so that it could be applicable to the implementation of empirical research. In conclusion, the Author distinguished three types of collective identities defined as borderline identities: binding identity, borderland identity and inter-border identity.

Describing the relationship „identity − stereotypes of strangers,” one can put forward two opposing hypotheses. The first shows that a conscious and active participation of individuals in cultural contents − national or religious − their identity with a unique collection of elements characteristic of a given group, lead to a negative picture of, and a negative attitude, towards those who function within different socio-cultural systems. The second thesis is principally a negation of the first one and would defend the relationship according to which a greater sense of identity brings forth a lesser level of aggression, and leads to an improvement of intergroup relations. The paper takes up the problems of this relationship and seeks to show what role is played in the process of shaping and functioning of stereotypes of the „ethnic strangers” by socio-cultural identity. Or, it maintains the picture of the „strangers,” generates it, or plays the function of a intergenerational medium.

Opis:
Gdańsk is a very interesting object of research. It is here that the process of making the Polish society subject-oriented started in 1980; it is here that originated the “Autumn of the Peoples in 1989”. This city has a many-aged tradition in which one may find Polish, Kashoubian, German, Hanzeatic, and Netherlandic manifestations of the creative spirit. The paper sought to show the semeiotic landscape of Gdańsk, therefore those elements, which consitute its differentia specifica. The symbols of the city are among the essential grounds upon which to form the character and identity of the city. In the light of the research, Gdańsk appears to be a city that is distinctly different from other Polish citites, and it is mainly its monuments and numerous historic places that join the impact of many cultures. The enormous symbolical force is concentrated in architecture and monuments and it enhances the sense of roots. It is owing to them that one can distinctly feel that the place is unique, feel its specific character and prestige.

The authors present the concept of Homi K. Bhabha, literature expert and representative of postcolonialism, and its contribution into the theory of collective identity. In fact, Bhabhabelieves that each nation is exposed to dissemination. Nowadays, national identity is only possible as a result of negotiations taking place in the third space between old national elites and new minorities. Thus, one may claim that Bhabhatakes a constructivist standpoint which became consolidated in the 1980s in the research into social sciences, which means that the nation is essentially treated not as the essence but as a product of construction. Yet, Bhabhadoes not follow that standpoint uncritically, because in his opinion, it treats the construction of a nation in an excessively unilateral manner. He compares the process involving creation of national identity to development of individual identity as defined in psychoanalysis. Indeed, Bhabha’s psychoanalytical assumptions emphasise what is strange, what is remarkable, what is not integrated in the prevailing opinion, but what is continuously threading its way towards national narration, yet its appearance is not controllable. Not only is the future ahead of us, but so is the past, as claims Bhabhafrom the psychoanalytical perspective, because new articulation and the shift of meaning on the margins of national community forcecontinuous re-establishment of traditions.

Aspirations for keeping the identity revealed by ethnical groups are an exceptional phenomenon in the process of the growing globalization. First of all attachment to one’s native language and to the culture of the group as well as acceptance of definite family structures are numbered among the most important symbols of ethnical identity. The following issues are especially important for a researcher studying the phenomenon of ethnical identity: a) significance of the minority language and the role of the community family structure as the leading symbols of ethnical identity among minority ethnical groups, b) identity of an ethnical minority in the perspective of fundamental values, c) the issue of the European ideal of a mono-language nation-state, d) of a multicultural nation-state (an Australian experience). The article presents studies of ethnical identity that were conducted in Australia, a country with a multicultural society. In the studies young people were included from the Polish and Italian milieus, and additionally respondents of Anglo-Saxon origin. The studies focus on individual assessments of the language that the respondents use in their homes. The analyses are concerned with – apart from the language values – the significance of family values (to this aim family structures were classified). In the article the suggestion is put forward to consider including the conception of fundamental values among the symbols of ethnical identity, that is of the values that are recognized as ones forming the fundamental components of the group culture, of the symbol of the group and of one’s belonging to it.

Zasadniczym celem podjętym w artykule jest przedstawienie koncepcji tożsamości religijnej Leona Dyczewskiego w dobie mediatyzacji religii i pokazanie dynamiki procesu mediatyzacji w kontekście pandemii COVID-19. Tematyka wpisuje się w nurt współczesnego dyskursu o tożsamości religijnej w dobie pandemii, otwierając nowe interesujące pola problemowe. Artykuł ma trójdzielną strukturę – w pierwszej części jest omówiona koncepcja tożsamości religijnej w ujęciu Leona Dyczewskiego, następnie przybliżone zagadnienie mediatyzacji religii wraz z odniesieniami do najważniejszych konsekwencji dla tożsamości religijnej. W części trzeciej dokonano empirycznej analizy dyskursów religijnych w Internecie w okresie pandemii COVID-19. Przekazy są traktowane jako produkty medialne konstruujące elementy treściowe tożsamości religijnej.
The main goal of the article is to present Leon Dyczewski’s concept of religious identity in the era of the mediatization of religion, and to describe the dynamics of this process in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The subject is an important part of the contemporary discourse on religious identity in the age of a pandemic and opens up new interesting problem issues.The article is divided into three parts. The first part discusses Dyczewski’s concept of religious identity. Then I present the issue of the mediatization of religion and how it affects religious identity. Finally, I carry out an empirical analysis of religious discourses on the Internet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Messages are treated as media products that construct the content elements of religious identity.

Risk is obviously one of those concepts that have recently made an unusual career. It has become part of the colloquial language and scientific discourse; it has considerably replaced such terms as “threat” or “uncertainty,” thereby responding in a way to the social quest for rational causes of fears and anxieties. It started to define a broader and broader area of phenomena. Consequently, representative of social sciences initiated research on the over-all issue of risk. The paper depicts results from such reflections. In sociology they are present as “social contructionism,” and its main proponents are U. Beck and A. Giddens. The “risk” is a term which in sociological theory represented by the above authors may be regarded in two basic dimensions: firstly, in the cultural, political and economical dimensions, all of which constitute the grounds of the paradigm of “social risk”; secondly, they are present in the dimension of planning and carrying out one's own biography. Each of the dimensions has its consequences both in the structural changes of society, and in the formation of new patterns of behaviour with regard to individual activities.

Family and identity are notions which often appear together. Talking about identity, we underline the role of previous socialisation in the family for the sake of constructing the picture of oneself. In turn, talking about family, we do not forget the roles which are bases to autodescriptions. The presented text relates to the understanding of identity by secondary school youth and is based on the results of TST and the association test (of the notion identity). Two models of defining oneself have been distinguished. The former is related to family bonds, whereas the latter – with personality traits. Women defined themselves in the context of family bonds and roles more often than men.

Sir Roger Scruton nie aprobował zmian w przestrzeni miast, które zapoczątkowane zostały w XX wieku przez modernizm. W swych pismach z zakresu estetyki, w publicystyce i działalności społecznej konsekwentnie upominał się o przywrócenie „prawdziwego” miasta, w którym decyduje wspólnota mieszkańców. Celem tekstu jest prześledzenie jego argumentacji i wykorzystanie jej do wyjaśnienia chaosu przestrzennego w Polsce. Z wielowątkowej twórczości Scrutona ograniczyłem się do trzech elementów związanych z krytyką modernizmu, rolą architekta i problemem tożsamości miasta i jego mieszkańców. Miało to doprowadzić do pokazania konserwatywnej recepty na odmianę sytuacji w mieście. Polega ona na oddaniu miasta wspólnocie mieszkańców, odbudowie przestrzeni publicznej (traktowanej jako dobro wspólne) i upomnienie się o pewne normy, które w interesie wspólnoty ograniczą leseferystyczne podejście do przestrzeni – to zasadnicze kwestie, których realizacja może wpłynąć na odmianę polskiej przestrzeni.
Sir Roger Scruton disapproved of the changes to urban space initiated by modernism in the 20th century. In his writings on aesthetics, his journalism, and his social activism, he consistently argued for restoring the ‘real’ city, in which the community of inhabitants decides. This text aims to trace Scruton’s argument and use it to explain the spatial chaos in Poland. From Scruton’s multifaceted work, I limited myself to three elements related to the critique of modernism, the architect’s role and the problem of the city’s identity and its inhabitants. This was to show a conservative way to change the situation in the city. This conservative remedial programme consists of giving the city back to the community of inhabitants, rebuilding public space (treated as a common good) and insisting on certain norms which, in the interest of the community, will limit the laissez-faire approach to space, are fundamental issues whose implementation can influence the variation of Polish space.

The paper shows a sociological analysis of the factors that condition the strengthening of group identity. The analyses refer in particular to small primary groups whose identity and permanence may be strengthened by taking advantage of its own inner attributes, such as: dynamism in the realization of values and group tasks (stimulated by an appropriate climate in the group), the position of the leader and his authority (determined, above all, by his positive efforts), and moral balance defined by definite positive variables. The paper clearly distances itself from both the detailed issues of the problem of identity and the analyses of the broader contexts conditioning the function of primary groups and their permanence, such that support or threat their existence. The main purpose of the selected analyses is a possibility to apply them in pedagogy by emphasizing the conditions how those who are interested in the strengthening of identity among subjects may accomplish full cooperation and integration - the group as a whole and its members.

Opis:
Migrations of women lead to changes in identity, which is subject to constant construction and verification. This text shows the problem of foreign labour migration of women living in the region of Opole. The main idea of the paper is to show the changes that lead to the redefinition of the identity of the migrants, and the transformations of their axiological systems as a consequence of their stay abroad. Each woman contributes to the culture of the foreign country by the fact of her being a foreigner. At the same time, through adaptation processes, each woman internalizes the values representative of the country to which she migrated. The analysis presented in the article draws upon the interviews held in 2007 and 2008 with the women who migrated from the region of Opole in search of labour. Also analysed are their diaries, which are a rich reservoir of their experiences, feelings and reflections. Finally, the analysis also relies on multidimensional quantitative research. The research reveals that some women, even though they stay in the foreign country for short, try their best to assimilate with the new social environment. They seem to ignore the cost of such an assimilation - that is the loss of what was important to them prior to migration, as regards patterns of their behaviour and traditions of their motherland. At the same time, finding an efficient mode of living among others enables building effective social relationships. Women are not always loyal to their husbands, and the reasons for their cheating on the spouses are various. Their stay abroad helps women feel more self-reliant, independent, self-confident and open to contacts with others.

Attempts at distinguishing the category of “stranger” from other research categories have been made from a variety of points of view characterising different disciplines of knowledge. The approach suggested in the article tries to set in order the existing considerations conducted in sociology. Its aim is not to reconstruct and compare all the possible explanations but rather to establish limits in which the suggested solutions may be placed. The analysis of chosen items from the literature of the subject made in the present article points to a peculiar dualism – existence of two basic ways of understanding the “stranger” and, in consequence, two criteria of “strangeness”. One of them results as it were from the essence of the “stranger” as the subject of the analysis, who is stigmatised irrespective of himself or the external perspective – the perspective of the appraising subject. One is a “stranger” by virtue of objective, unchanging factors, like e.g. race, sex, nationality or age. Most often these categories consider not so much people's very traits, as consequences of their belonging to cognitively distinguished social classes or groups. This type of explanation may be labelled as absolute or unqualified. The other criterion of “strangeness” is liquid, as it is established in a subjective appraisal by the observer in a dynamically changing context. Here it is called relative or contextual, because of the subjective perspective of appraisal dependent on a socially defined situation. As it will be shown, this type of interpretation shakes the conceptions that from social categorisation made a tool of a “necessary” division into “better” and “worse”, “one's own” and “strange” people.

At the turn of the 1980's the first group of young people of Polish origin from the former Soviet Union started their studies in Poland. Their number increased very quickly and in the academic year 1996/97 2622 people, mainly from such countries as the Ukraine, Lithuania, Belorussia, Russia and Latvia, studied at Polish universities. In the year 1997/98 sociological research was conducted concerning national consciousness of the mentioned students. The sample comprised 802 subjects. The present article, that is based on the results of the research, shows the kinds of national self-identification of the respondents before they started their studies in Poland and in the course of those studies; it also points to how the changes in this field were conditioned by their stay in Poland. Before coming to Poland just over 72% claimed they were of Polish nationality, but when some time passed after they had started their studies, only 63% did so. As many as 60% of the surveyed students stated that they were treated as “Ruskie” (derogatory form of “Russians”), 23% − as strangers, and 10% as people whose nationality was that of the country they came from. Over 53% defined this as an annoying experience and 21% felt humiliated and degraded by that. Over 68% felt forced to prove their being Polish. The way the young people are perceived and their emotional reactions resulting from that are probably the main cause of the national conversion of 9% of them. The phenomenon of changing one's national self-identification, that is known from other situations, especially in the borderland, in this case has a completely untypical and special character, as it is the result of contact between young people of Polish origin from the East who describe themselves as Polish, with the Polish society. This contact also made them realise the fact that being Polish in the countries they came from has a little different character from that in Poland, and the Polish character they represent met with misunderstanding, lack of acceptance and was questioned. This is why having a possibility of a closer national self-definition only over 9% of the subjects chose to identify themselves with the Polish nationality without a more precise qualification, over 18% pointed to their Polish origin, and over 64% labelled themselves as “Poles from the East”.

Opis:
The Focolari movement – one of the largest, dynamically developed, international, Catholic movements of revitalization – was in the period of years (1995-2000) the subject matter of research. The research made use of a number of qualitative methods. Thus the process of creating a collective identity was reconstructed. Moreover, the organizational actions were shown as regards the presentation and promotion of the specific appeal to convert, and its related patterns of involvement and social identities. The Focolari movement was established as a result of individual quest after an alternative form of religious commitment within the Catholic Church. This individual quest was then transformed into a collective quest. The process of initial conversion of a fellowship had brought about foundations for the collective identity and a common mission of the movement. Under the leadership of a charismatic leader it was developed and referred to the post-conciliar reforms of Catholicism and the problems of modern societies. By virtue of an effective organization, with the use of modern means of communication, the movement extends its appeal for a multicultural, interfaith, world-view dialogue, and cooperation in the private and public spheres. It disseminates also alternative patterns of religious and lay social identities, which supplement of the offer of conventional religious and lay institutions.
