    The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 59 (2011), issue 1. The article is the editor-in-chief’s comment to the discussion between Agnieszka Czechowicz and Paweł Bohuszewicz as presented in the current issue of the journal. The author defends philological methods in studying early modern literary texts and expresses her scepticism concerning any methods questioning and negating the fundamental epistemological difference between what is being studied and a researcher himself.

    The article is a polemic with the postulates of applying non-philological methods, that have their anti-interpretative roots in the philosophy of deconstruction, in studies of Old Polish literature. In the study of literature it is worth taking up the most difficult challenges as well as it is worth talking about such ones – this thesis is illustrated by a reference to Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski's poetical treatise De perfecta poesi (On perfect poetry) coming from the 17th century, that is treated here as a kind of treatise on the method of writing an epic. Also, it is better for the very researchers to take a position on significant methodological propositions, and not on ones that result from being tired of the subject of the studies or from the naïve willingness to perform experiments with the use of tools supplied by anti-logocentric (and hence – anti-humanist) currents of modern philosophy.

    Opis:
    This paper reviews the methods applied in the studies on Old-Polish religious literature. The author is sceptical about the usefulness of historical and literary analyses in the studies on the actual religious attitudes. She states that the methods of the history of literature serve mainly to unveil the sources and structures of religious culture; she stresses that the use of intertextual methods is particularly effective in the most recent works. She also emphasises that need for a better recognition of the specific genres of Old-Polish religious literature and the types of writing (sermons, postillas, hagiographies, and religious epic), and she distances herself from such categories (more and more often found in studies) as metaphysical, meditative, and mystic literature. She points at difficulties in their definition, and stresses that their scope if blurred.

    The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 56 (2008), issue 1. The paper is a hidden polemic with the texts that have recently been published (not quoted by their names or indicated in the footnotes). These texts have brought forth a diagnosis that there is a delay in terms of methodology with regard to the studies on Old-Polish literature and have postulated their application to the studies on ancient literature. The author formulates her belief that traditional philology is indispensable in the studies on Old-Polish literature with an awareness that there should be a free choice in selecting the method of its interpretation. The text emerges from a protest against the rhetoric of methodological directives formulated under the influence of fashion, ideology, or fatigue with the object of research and from radical distrust to methodological directives as such, and the majority of directives in general.
