    The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 56 (2008), issue 3. In his Meditations, the Stoic emperor Marcus Aurelius very often resorts to the motif of passing and transitory nature of human life. On the one hand, this permanent and pessimistic motif may be interpreted as a certain kind of spiritual exercise, practised not only by Stoics. On the other hand, we cannot exclude that this is a manifestation of the author’s personal views and experiences. Marcus often touched upon the topic of death, a fact that was not necessarily an expression of his fear of what was inevitable since, according to the Stoic doctrine, death belongs to the immutable order of the world and is congruous with nature, hence it is completely acceptable. Marcus Aurelius is rather afraid of the transitory nature of the moment that we are given. He stresses that life “is passing away” each day and, at the same time, he is tormented with the lack of time that must be filled with good and respectable behaviour, with life in conformity with reason, or the deity. Marcus Aurelius is not frightened by death itself, but by the possibility to lose control over one’s life, loss of consciousness, and the ability to reflect (in case of an illness or old age). He also firmly stresses the importance of favours that we may and should render to others, which besides properly forming one’s soul, are the goal of human life.

    The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 56 (2008), issue 1. The paper is a hidden polemic with the texts that have recently been published (not quoted by their names or indicated in the footnotes). These texts have brought forth a diagnosis that there is a delay in terms of methodology with regard to the studies on Old-Polish literature and have postulated their application to the studies on ancient literature. The author formulates her belief that traditional philology is indispensable in the studies on Old-Polish literature with an awareness that there should be a free choice in selecting the method of its interpretation. The text emerges from a protest against the rhetoric of methodological directives formulated under the influence of fashion, ideology, or fatigue with the object of research and from radical distrust to methodological directives as such, and the majority of directives in general.

    Trochę przecieków, trochę przeciągów. O trzech niezrealizowanych tłumaczeniach sztuk Harolda Pintera Artykuł omawia przekłady trzech sztuk Harolda Pintera: Pokój, Przyjęcie oraz Światło księżyca, które jak dotąd nie doczekały się scenicznej realizacji w Polsce. Są to jednocześnie sztuki, które z jednej strony reprezentują główne etapy twórczości Pintera, z drugiej zaś stanowią ich ważne wzbogacenie. W świetle dwoistej natury tekstu dramatycznego (będącego jednocześnie utworem literackim oraz scenariuszem potencjalnego przedstawienia) analiza tłumaczeń skupia się zarówno na ich aspektach literackich, jak i teatralnych. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie wyzwań stojących przed tłumaczami Pintera, a także refleksja nad podjętymi przez nich wyborami oraz ich potencjalnymi konsekwencjami dla lektury i realizacji scenicznej. Jest to szczególnie ważne ze względu na fakt, że sam Pinter z determinacją podkreślał wagę tekstu jako jednego z najważniejszych elementów składowych przedstawienia.
    The article discusses translations of three plays by Harold Pinter (The Room, Party Time, Moonlight) which so far have not been staged in Poland. The plays are significant since they represent three major stages in Pinter’s playwriting career while simultaneously enriching and extending Pinter’s predominant motifs and concerns. So as to reflect the inherent duality of the dramatic text (which can be treated both as a literary work and a script for potential performance), the article investigates the translations of the plays by placing emphasis on their literary as well as theatrical features. This is done with a view to presenting challenges facing translators of Pinter’s plays and to reflect on selected translator’s choices and strategies which might have a bearing on the interpretation by potential readers as well as theatre practitioners. It is especially relevant in the light of Pinter’s determination in underlining the importance of the dramatic text in the actual performance.
