novel of the middle of the 19th century
Opis:
An attempt at reconstruction of the cultural model of Polish positivism as a component of the paradigm of modernity is the subject of the study. It tries to describe the constitutive determinants of the positivist world view in which „the philosophical discourse of modernity” was evidently reflected. Polish positivism turned out to be an explication of fundamental, emancipation  ideas of modernity, mainly the ideas of civilization progress that determined the positivists' historiosophic thinking. The spirit of modernity was manifested in Polish positivism not only on the plane of „great narratives” legitimizing intellectual discourses of that time, but it also influenced the status of the conception of subjectivity that was obligatory in that epoch, a conception that was basically founded on the modern episteme.

Opis:
Eliza Orzeszkowa's views on civilization, its essence and tasks evolved in her lifetime: from the attitude full of approval, faith in the intellectual and moral progress of mankind, to the attitude of skepticism and disappointment with civilization that does not bear the expected fruit. From the beginning of the 1880's the author of Pierwotni (The Primary) in her works ever more often outlines the picture of two types of civilization and their representatives: the true civilization (postulated, spiritual, being a kind of process) and the false one (material, being a kind of ceiling, a kind of the achieved status). Growing criticism and distrust in a wrongly understood and realized civilization make her notice more and more symptoms of its disproportionate development, exaggeration, overgrowth, that is its „over-civilizing”, as well as „over-aestheticizing” and „over-refining”. For Orzeszkowa civilization is rather an ability to distinguish good from evil and to increase good; it is spiritual culture and involvement in citizens' activities. The author of Melancholicy (The Melancholics) defends the right to a wise sadness over the invasion of pessimism, the right to suffering – against the hedonism and attitudinizing of decadents, she defends aesthetics from over-refining, dogmas – from lack of dogmas, the right to deficiency – from excesses, and civilization – from over-civilizing. The writer's protest against degeneracy of the modern world reached its summit in the sketch Na wspaniałej Wilhelmsstrasse (On the Glorious Wilhelmsstrasse) (1907), in which transformations of the West's culture and civilization she interpreted from the apocalyptic point of view and in a catastrophic mood. The mechanized and materialistic relations between people may be only cured, according to Orzeszkowa, by love and sacrifice – the true „worlds of civilization”.

Opis:
This paper focuses on the problem how history can influence interpretation and evaluation of a work of art. A selection of works by Wiktor Tołkin serve as the basis for case study. The first case is Tołkin's monument in the former Stutthof concentration camp. The second is the Majdanek memorial for the victims of the camp. The third case is Tołkin’s victory memorial in Darłowo and the fourth is his monument commemorating Poland’s vows at the Baltic seaside in Kołobrzeg. The last two cases are a monument of gratitude to the Soviet Army in Sztum and the bust of Janek Krasicki in Gdansk.Wiktor Tołkin’s life and artistic work has been strongly related with the city of Gdańsk. He belongs to the generation of Poles called the Generation of Columbuses. His life is a perfect example of how one's own experiences and achievements can be determined by the unpredictable turns of history. Dramatic and life-threatening changes that Tołkin has gone through manifest themselves in his artistic achievements. The artist has created his own language of artistic expression to be able to talk about his own life experiences, but also to reflect upon society and culture in general. The author of this paper pays special attention to the process of artistic creation, with particular focus on the aspect of Tołkin’s search for suitable symbols or metaphors to help him express the message of his art in the way he planned before starting work. The paper also analyses the artistic means that Tołkin has employed, since they influence greatly the interpretation and reception of his works.
