Opis:
The work is based on archival materials produced by the local Government offices in the Lublin Province (Guberniya), kept in the State Registers in Lublin. They are personal records of the Mayors. Three Register sets were searched (the Commission of the Lublin Province 1816-1837, the Government of the Lublin Guberniya I 1837-1866, and the Government of the Lublin Guberniya 1867-1918) that are inherited from the State Administration offices. The group of officials called “Mayors of private towns in the Lublin Province (Guberniya) in the years 1815-1867” was constituted by 225 people altogether. In the administration hierarchy the mayor was a town official subjected to the district (obwód) Commissary, and when the districts were cancelled in 1842 – to the head of the powiat (the smallest administrative division). Each clerk who wanted to hold the office, had to pass the examination run by the Provincial Commission. On the basis of the mayors' personal records we can state that only 10% of them passed the exam required by the law, although the system of examinations was binding up to 1859. The range of the mayor's competences was very broad and concerned three main fields: administration, police and the fiscal matters. We also find that he very often fulfilled the functions of the trade controller. On the basis of source materials we can state that apart from the period 1815-1822 there are no longer pauses or vacancies in the office of the mayor in private towns in the Lublin Province (Guberniya).

Opis:
Memory of the past in a society, especially one whose members were largely illiterate, was not only a bridge of its kind between the past and the present, but an important – particularly from the point of view of the perception of the practice of social life – guarantee of the truth and a sanction of the state existing in the present. It was on the range and permanence of this memory, on the efficiency of securing it and caring for it, on the effectiveness of the chronometric means used, and finally on the consciousness of its value for the „here and now”, which may be jointly defined as temporal awareness, that the conditions of the legal and economic existence of the inhabitants of the 16th century countryside depended. With a limited participation of written sources in depositing the memory of the peasant population and the development of its temporal awareness, this population first of all used relative chronology, no doubt better understood than any absolute date, as well as relative chronological means. The role of guardians of memory, sometimes formalized and formulated as a legal custom, was played by the oldest members of the community, defined as „rememberers” in inspection documents. The memory of the inhabitants of a Lublin village as a rule did not exceed twenty years, but with the use of genealogical measures also much more distant past was remembered, usually reaching the generation of the grandfather, that is comprising the span of about 60-70 years in this way.
