Opis:
This paper is an analysis of the status quo of Russian emigrants to Poland in the years 1919-1920. The Russian diaspora in Poland was calculated at 10 up to 140 thousand in the years 1920s and 1930s – the Russian minority in Poland included. A positive portrait of the inter-war Warsaw, and the selected representatives of the Polish intellectual elites (L. Żelichowski, J. Czapski, M. Zdziechowski) depicted in the memoirs of Zinaida Gippius are presented in the paper. Gippius, accompanied by her husband Dymitr Merezkhovski, lived in Bobruysk, Minsk and Vilnius – cities that were Polish at that time. She also stayed in Warsaw between late December 1919 until October 1920. The memoirs also contain Gippius’s personal view of the atmosphere of the Polish-Soviet armed conflict. Her memoirs are based on the journalist texts from Dziennik Warszawski (Warsaw Daily) and her own notes in Polska 1920, giving a personal insight into historical facts. The memoirs disclose the political plans of the Russian emigration to Poland (struggle against Bolshevism with the help of J. Pilsudski), but they also present a rich personal plane of the author’s own intimate life and experiences. Z. Gippius's attitude towards Poland, as seen in her work, evolved from admiration and hopefulness for successful liberation of Russia from the Bolshevist rule towards a total and severe condemnation of Poland on its signing a peace treaty with the Soviets. The Warsaw war epos of the 1920 was also marked with Gippius’s personal loss. She left Warsaw leaving behind a friend, D. Filosofov, who decided on a permanent stay in Poland.

Opis:
History of Poles in Germany and their returns to Poland in the period between signing the Treaty of Versailles on 28th June 1919 and the year 1921 were almost completely left unspoken of in historical literature, both Polish and German. On the basis of archival documents found in German archives: Politisches Archiv Auswärtiges Amt, HS Düsseldorf, STA Münster, and in Polish ones: Archiwum Akt Nowych PRM iMSZ, AP Bydgoszcz it has been penetratingly shown how Poles living in Germany at that time were involved in all the most important political events; among them in the plebiscites in Warmia, Masuria, Upper Silesia, the Silesian uprisings, revolution in Germany, Kapp-Lütwitz's coup d'état, class and party conflicts in the Ruhr as well as in Berlin. Actions taken against Poles during the Polish-Bolshevik war as well as the attitude of the German authorities and of the Polish diplomatic agencies towards them have been presented in detail. For the first time data have been presented concerning the ways of re-emigration and the statistics of Poles coming back. In the election to the Reichstag in 1920 in the districts of Rhineland and Westphalia over 60 thousand votes were cast for Polish candidates. In the discussed period also several hundred Poles were elected for the District Councils of Westphalia and Rhineland as well as for the parish councils there. In many places national school courses (Volksshochschulekurse) were conducted which were attended by nearly 4 thousand people. Preparations to the re-emigration action and the course the action took were slowed down because of lack of executive regulations enabling one to choose the country to which he declared his will to move along with his belongings. Polish emigration in Germany resented lack of tax regulations between the Polish and German sides. This was the reason why the special Association for defending emigrants was established. Many Poles coming back to Poland took up important offices of voivodes, town presidents, Members of Parliament and Senators there and Jan Brejski even was a candidate for the Prime Minister of the Polish Republic. They tried to give help to Poles that were persecuted in Germany. It seems that without a thorough investigation of the situation of Poles in Germany at that period it is hard to take an objective view of the events of the following years connected with exercising the options and the `compulsory re-emigration', the problem of national minorities in both countries and to look professionally at the diplomatic game of the representatives of Poland and Germany concerning the opting people and the Polish-German relations in general.

Opis:
The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne vol. 60, issue 4 (2012). Ludomir Sleńdziński was the main representative of classicism in Polish art in the period between the two World Wars. The article discusses his two trips to Italy in 1922/24 and 1924/25. They have not been yet researched in the context of the origin and character of his work, albeit impulses coming from Italy were thought to have been an important catalyst for the birth of the so-called “return to order.” Sleńdziński was Dmitry Kardovsky’s student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sankt Petersburg, and it was in his class that he acquired a worship of the old masters and a perfect command of his trade, first of all perfect drawing skills. Apart from the Sankt Petersburg school, classicist trends came to Polish art from Paris where they were first noticed in the circles connected with the Museion magazine (1911-1913) and among artists belonging to the Polish colony, such as Henryk Kuna, Edward Wittig and Eugeniusz Żak. In the article, I reconstruct Sleńdziński’s tour of Italy, and I remind about the exhibition of Polish modern art that he staged in 1925 as part of the 3rd Roman Biennale. His personal contact with old and modern Italian art became an important moment in his artistic formation, stimulating his departure from academic towards modern classicism, in which the artist starts playing a game with the present day and with tradition, consciously using stylistic elements that belong to different epochs. In conclusion it must be said that Ludomir’s trips inclined him to introduce many new solutions (sometimes surprisingly close to works by well-known Italian artists of similar outlook) and determined the final shape of his mature work.
