Opis:
Demobilized soldiers of the 1914-1918 war were not satisfied with their material status. At the beginning attempts at uniting the combatants of particular formations from the time World War I had a friendly and mutual aid character. With the passage of time a legend of the soldiers' and their commanders' acts was born and consolidated. In the case of the Legions' soldiers the situation was similar. This was complemented with Marshal Piłsudski's soldiers' general dissatisfaction when he was depraved of any influence on the state and the army after 1921. The Polish Legions Association (ZLP) established in 1922 only for a short time remained a non-political organization. Dissatisfaction with the political situation in Poland could already be seen during the 2nd Convention of the Association that took place in Lvov on 5-6 August 1923. The next convention, organized in Lublin, was already an attempt at consolidating the ranks for a struggle against the rule of parliamentary democration. In the period preceding the Convention the ZLP branches in the Lublin Province became active; also the Rifle Club intensified its activity. Numerous initiatives were launched before the convention started. Dissatisfaction with the existing situation was loudly manifested by the Lublin organization of the Polish Socialist Party. The 3rd Convention took place on 9-10 August 1924. The Polish Legions soldiers' complicity and their insufficient activity were mentioned in connection with Marshal Piłsudski being debarred from the Army. The Legions' battles in the Lublin Province in 1915 were reminded. For this reason the battlefield and military cemetary in Jastków were included in the celebrations. During the Convention days it was declared to the whole country that the Association joins Poland's political life. Nearly two years later the ideology accepted by Józef Piłsudski's supporters during the Convention resulted in an armed coup that was the beginning of the “Sanacja” system that lasted till September 1939.

The paper attempts to show the overall efforts made by society to help the legionnaires and soldiers of the Polish Army in the years 1915-1922. This is shown on the example of Zwierzyniec, a small town in South-East Poland, with a large group of people who were involved in charitable work there. The questions addressed in the paper enrich our knowledge about the history of Zwierzyniec, the Zamość administrative unit, and all the Lublin region during the First World War. In the light of the archival sources, which have been unknown so far, the paper discusses such organizations as: the League of Women, the Committee for the Care about Legionnaires, the Society of Friends of the Polish Soldier. Such associations as those mentioned, had their counterparts in Lublin and in other Polish towns.

Opis:
The Lublin region was in the summer of 1915 the scene of battles of the divisions of the Polish Legions against the Russian invader. It was then that many volunteers conscripted in this martial formation from Lublin and its vicinity. No wonder that at the moment when Poland was becoming a free country an idea was conceived in this milieu to establish their own combatant organization. The Association of the Polish Legionaries in Lublin came into being at the turn of 1922 and 1923. It united soldiers of all the brigades of the Legionaries fighting for freedom in the years 1914-1918. From the moment of its establishment the Lublin milieu of the Association was in confusion and discontent. The obvious reason was that J. Piłsudski, the commander of the Legions, had been removed from politics and army. Another factor contributing to frustration and changes was the fact that political opponents wielded power in the country and in the Lublin region. The 3rd Assembly of ZLP held in Lublin on 9-10 August, 1924, was the first step of the advocates of Piłsudski on the way to take over the helm. During the May coup d'etat of 1926 the Lublin milieu of the Association along with the local organization of the Polish Socialistic Party and the Trade Union of Railwaymen, the Association of Non-commissioned Officers of the Reserve and the Shooting Association firmly sided with Piłsudski. Over the whole period of 1922-1926 the members of the Lublin Division of ZLP, apart from their statute activity, wished to exerted impact on and indeed influence the Political life of the region and in the country.

Opis:
The political peasant movement in the Austrian partition was established in the 1890s. The initiator of many peasant organizations (the Alliance of Peasant Party, Polish Peasant Centre, Christian-Peasant Party) was Rev Stanisław Stojałowski. These organizations sought to put into practice social and political Christian ethical principles, and to raise the standard of economy and education in the village. Following the tenets of Leo XIII’s encyclical Rerum novarum the activists of the Catholic-peasant parties made efforts to promote the introduction of Christian order into social, economic and political life. The attempts to receive Catholic social thought into the village were made by the Polish bishops from the Austrian partition, as well. The turn of the century brought forth new problems. The bishops wanted to meet them. There were among them abp J. T. Teodorowicz, J. Bilczewski and bp. J. S. Pelczar and L. Wałęga. Undoubtedly, the socio-political and religious organizations which they had established played a positive role among the villagers in the times when liberal and socialist ideas sought to take over "the power over the souls".

Opis:
The figure of Józef Nakonieczny has not yet been properly discussed in the Polish historiography. He worked in many areas in the national-democratic movement in the first fifteen years of the twentieth century. His appearance on the Polish political stage proved that the programme formulated by the leaders of this political movement was successfully realized and had definite results: the social class that for ages had not belonged to the nation in the political sense of the term, i.e. the peasantry, reached for a place in the society that they truly deserved. Nakonieczny, like other peasant activists who were under the influence of the national-democratic fraction (J. Błyskosz, W. Wiącek, P. Żak, K. Dułgoborski, M. Manterys, J. Łaszcz, J. Ostrowski) takes an active and conscious part in the work of putting into effect the national programme. In the situation of national captivity, when the country and the nation were divided into three partitions belonging to the three neighbouring powers, if one was considering regaining independence, he had to include the whole peasantry in the process. Nakonieczny perfectly realized the fact that when a battle was going on against the extermination of our nation and when one wanted to oppose the rapacious Russification, strong bonds of national solidarism had to be built over the class and political divisions. In his social-political work with the peasantry in the Lublin region, he devoted himself totally to these problems. He defended the integrity of the Kingdom lands when the Russians tried to separate the Chełm district and include it in their empire. He confuted the attacks launched by the Russian Orthodox Church against the Catholic Church's possessions in the Russian partition. He frequently presented his views in this respect in the Duma − the Russian Parliament − in the years 1907-1914. Among the representatives of the class he came from, and not only among them, he gained respect and appreciation. He constituted an important element in the political work of the national parties on the Polish territories. When he died in a car crash on 11 April 1915 it was a great loss for his party collegues: Z. Balicki, R. Dmowski, S. Kozicki, W. Jaroński. The peasants from the Lublin region lost an advocate of their problems. Crowds of many thousands of peasants, gentry, intelligentsia and clergy that gathered for his funeral proved this beyond all doubt.
