    Opis:
    The aim of the article is to present the strategy of rehabilitation of the teleology in the conception of Robert Spaemann, Reinchard Löw and Hans Jonas. That strategy takes into account a few aspects: (1) the analysis of general conception of explanation in which the character of questions activating the process of explanation is taking into consideration, (2) the analysis of the conception of the teleological and causal explanations (according to the Hempel-Oppenheim model), (3) determination of the pragmatic background of the controversies concerning teleology, (4) determination of the domain and aims of teleological and causal interpretations.
    Celem artykułu jest prezentacja strategii rehabilitacji teleologii w ujęciu: Roberta Spaemanna, Reincharda Löwa oraz Hansa Jonasa. Strategia ta uwzględnia kilka aspektów: (1) analizę ogólnej koncepcji wyjaśniania, w której jest uwzględniony charakter pytań uruchamiających proces wyjaśniania, (2) analizę koncepcji wyjaśniania teleologicznego i przyczynowego (według modelu Hempla- Oppenheima) (3) określenie pragmatycznego tła sporu o teleologię, (4) określenie domeny i celów interpretacji teleologicznych i przyczynowych.

    Opis:
    The main purpose of this article is to present the essence and the role of anthropic explanation in cosmology. This explanation was proposed during the time when there was no further possibility of finding the explanation of cosmic coincidences on the ground of contemporary scientific theories. This explanation relies on the recognition of the fact of the existence of a carbon life in the Universe as a factor which explains the Universe’s global characteristics, which are a requisite for appearance of life. The explanatory value of this explanation depends on the character of relations of the connections between the cosmic coincidences and the fact of the existence of life. In the case of the Weak Anthropic Principle this explanation has a character of simple tautology. In the case of the Strong Anthropic Principle, however, it is a philosophical explanation, whose cognitive value depends on both: the correctness of these principles and their logico-mathematical coherence with the cosmic coincidences.

    Opis:
    The purpose of the article is to analyze the concept of contextual emergence as well as its selected applications in philosophy of mind and cognitive science. In the first section the author presents the general assumptions of the emergentist model of reality. He stresses that the concept of emergence can be applied to the description of various levels of organization of nature: one of these levels is that of mental-cognitive processes, analyzed within the fields of philosophy of mind and cognitive science. In the subsequent sections, he introduces the definitions of contextual emergence and systemic causation and he points to their selected applications to mental-cognitive systems. In the concluding part, he presents the ideas of Gerald Edelman and Michael Gazzaniga on the role of contextual explanations as well as the concepts of emergence in the philosophy of biology and cognitive neuroscience. He also indicates the possibility of incorporating the concept of contextual emergence into active externalism and the extended cognition theory.
    Celem artykułu jest analiza pojęcia emergencji kontekstowej oraz jego wybranych zastosowań w filozofii umysłu i kognitywistyce. W pierwszej sekcji autor przedstawia ogólne założenia emergentystycznego obrazu rzeczywistości. Zwraca uwagę, że pojęcie emergencji ma zastosowanie do opisu różnych poziomów rzeczywistości — jednym z nich jest poziom systemów umysłowo-‑poznawczych badany w filozofii umysłu i kognitywistyce. W kolejnych sekcjach wprowadza definicje emergencji kontekstowej oraz przyczynowości systemowej oraz wskazuje na zastosowania tych pojęć w odniesieniu do systemów umysłowo-poznawczych. W końcowej części artykułu, w nawiązaniu do prac Geralda Edelmana i Michaela Gazzanigi, omawia rolę wyjaśniania kontekstowego w biologii i neurokognitywistyce. Wskazuje również na możliwość wykorzystania pojęcia emergencji kontekstowej w analizie eksternalizmu aktywnego oraz teorii rozszerzonego poznania.

Bromberg’s description of abnormic laws will provide the point of departure for the present analysis.     Przedmiotem analizy podjętej w artykule jest procedura wyjaśniania statystycznego. Dla potrzeb prowadzonych rozważań omówiony został szczególny typ badań biomedycznych, jakim jest analiza podgrup randomizowanych badań klinicznych. Pokazane zostało, że poprawności wyjaśnień statystycznych nie można ustalić, analizując wyłącznie strukturę eksplanansu, jak jest to przyjmowane w modelu istotności statystycznej (R-S), zaproponowanym przez W. Salmona. Procedura wyjaśniania statystycznego jest zatem, w przeciwieństwie do pozostałych form wyjaśniania, zależna od procedur badawczych stanowiących podstawę formułowania twierdzeń statystycznych.
    The subject of analysis undertaken in the article is the procedure of statistical explanation. For this purpose a specific type of biomedical study, so called subgroup analysis of randomized clinical trials (SA), was discussed. It was shown that the validity of statistical explanations can not be determined by analyzing only the structure of explanation, as is the case in the statistical significance model (S-R) proposed by W. Salmon. Therefore, the statistical explanatory procedure is, in contrast to the other explanatory forms, dependent on the research procedures underlying the formulation of statistical theorems.

    Opis:
    A survey of the modern theories of explanation leads us to conclude that it is J. Woodward's conterfactual approach that seems to set out a promising agenda for setting up a satisfactory model of explanation. Such a model would need to come to terms with two stipulations, i.e. to reflect causal asymmetry and be empirically adequate. To meet the latter I modify the counterfactual model of explanation to require a class of observationally equivalent (Bayesian) causal models instead of the true causal model. For in most cases empirical adequacy of causal models, i.e. their identifiability and consistency with observed distributions, would neither grant the stronger conclusion Woodward embeds in his conterfactual account of explanation nor license metaphysical naturalism.

    The origin of anthropic trend in cosmology is connected to the, so called, large number coincidence, which was observed by Eddington. Dicke, Hoyle and Whitrow developed the anthropic notion of the universe, which made Carter formulate the anthropic principles. These principles may be used as qualitative cosmological tests. In the anthropic thought  there were also found procedures of anthropic explanation, used, e.g., by theists and criticized by the followers of the multiverse concept. This article will be devoted to the history of anthropic thinking in cosmology, from large numbers to the concept of multiverse, stressing prof. Józef Turek’s contribution to the development of this matter.

    Opis:
    Philosophy of nature as “a science in the beginning,” having paved a way for natural sciences, has not lost its impact even today. It suggests new problems and proposes solutions in the domains which the scientific disciplines in question cannot solve because they do not have appropriate tools. On can notice the relationship between the philosophy of nature and natural sciences in various stages of their development. It happens so that the overall images of the world are constructed on the basis of the results of natural sciences and philosophical theses. Those theses, i.e. philosophical ideas are introduced as presuppositions into natural sciences, which in turn may generate philosophical problems. One can observe a relationship between natural sciences and various types of the philosophy of nature from the ancient times till today. The classical tradition had ignored the factor of time in the manners it sought to explain nature and, instead, stressed formal elements in knowledge. This conception of the scientific explanation of nature was questioned by the idea of creation and the Christian conception of history which took the factor of time into account in explanations. The principal change of the hitherto manner of interpretation of phenomena had taken place at the moment of introducing evolutionary ideas into geology and biology. Owing to this genetic explanation appeared, and the conceptual apparatus of the hitherto systems of the philosophy of nature changed. On the grounds of the essentialising approaches the elements of the philosophy of nature are mixed with the elements of natural sciences. One can notice also a relationship between the existential approaches of the philosophy of nature and natural sciences. Much attention is devoted to the relations between natural sciences and the philosophy of nature on the grounds of classical philosophy and in the non-classical positions.

    While William Hasker and I for the most part broadly agree in our opposition to much of the contemporary philosophical community concerning issues in the philosophy of mind that he discusses in his book, there are nevertheless seemingly some domestic disputes between him and me about certain matters concerning the nature of events involving the self. In this paper, I will focus on two of these disagreements. The first disagreement concerns Hasker’s treatment of what is widely known today as the argument from reason and whether the events involved in our reasoning are essentially causal or teleological in nature. The second disagreement is about Hasker’s account of libertarian freedom, and whether agent causation is required to explain our free choices.
    Pomimo tego, że autor zgadza się z Williamem Haskerem co do opozycji wobec wielu rozwiązań we współczesnej filozofii umysłu, istnieją między nimi pewne punkty sporne. W artykule autor omawia dwa z nich. Pierwszy dotyczy traktowania przez Haskera tego, co jest dziś powszechnie znane jako argument z rozumu, związany z zagadnieniem, czy rozumowania mają zasadniczo charakter przyczynowy czy teleologiczny. Drugi spór dotyczy poglądu Haskera na wolność libertariańską i tego, czy do wyjaśnienia naszych wolnych wyborów potrzebne jest odwołanie się do przyczynowości.

    W swojej książce Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej Jacek Wojtysiak podejmuje temat Bożego ukrycia. W początkowych rozdziałach wchodzi w polemikę z argumentem J.L. Schellenberga, który z istnienia rzetelnej niewiary wyciąga wniosek o nieistnieniu Boga. W celu zneutralizowania tego argumentu Wojtysiak odwraca go, konstruując argument na rzecz istnienia Boga z faktu istnienia rzetelnych wierzących, a następnie wzmacnia go do argumentu z wielkiego faktu wiary (i jego kolejnych wersji). Argumentuję, że odwrócone argumenty Wojtysiaka (z rzetelnych wierzących i z wielkiego faktu wiary) nie są symetrycznym odbiciem wyjściowego argumentu z rzetelnych niewierzących, gdyż są od niego słabsze. Wskazuję, że niektóre argumenty Wojtysiaka mogą być odwrócone przez ateistę. Podnoszę też kwestię, że wniosek końcowych argumentów Wojtysiaka nie jest satysfakcjonujący dla teisty.
    In his book Między ukryciem a jawnością. Esej z filozofii religii i teologii filozoficznej [Between Hiddenness and Openness: An Essay in the Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology] Jacek Wojtysiak takes up the issue of divine hiddenness. In the opening chapters he enters into a polemic with the argument of J.L. Schellenberg, who from the existence of reasonable unbelief draws the conclusion that God does not exist. In order to neutralize this argument, Wojtysiak reverses it, constructing an argument for the existence of God from the fact of the existence of reasonable believers, and then strengthens it to an argument from the great fact of faith (and its subsequent versions). I argue that Wojtysiak’s reversed arguments (from reasonable believers and from the great fact of faith) are not symmetrical to the initial argument from reasonable non-believers, because they are weaker. I point out that some of Wojtysiak’s arguments can be reversed by an atheist. I also raise the point that the conclusion of Wojtysiak’s final arguments is not satisfactory to a theist.

    We formulate a cosmogonic indifference principle in cosmology in terms of a dynamical system theory. While the choice between generic and fine tuned initial condition for our Universe has a rather philosophical character, there is a very generic set of initial conditions which give rise to the concordance inflectional ΛCDM model which becomes in good agreement with astronomical observations.
