Opis:
Two formulations of the philosophical analysis of living phenomena have been presented. First of them is the classical analysis (i. e. Aristotelian-Thomist's one) done by P. Lenartowicz and the other one has been done by the present author. The latter is carried out from the point of view of the philosophy of systems and information. Both analyses attempted to elucidate the essence of the enzymatic catalysis. The following problems have been reviewed and discussed: (i) the role of enzymes in epigenesis and integration coming into effect on the molecular level of the life organization; (ii) the relation between the knowledge on enzymes and the philosophical problems of the essence and origin of life; (iii) information as the essence of the universe and life; (iv) enzymes as the processors of mass, energy, and information; (v) the genesis of life as the information process and the catalytic properties of some ribonucleic acids. In the result of the analyses, it has been concluded that the system-information philosophy is more adequate than the classical one. In the context of the empirical data, as well as the theoretical concepts, mainly of F. -A. Popp and T. Stonier, it has been hypothesized that: (i) life should be regarded as the form of the information transferred on the electromagnetic carrier; (ii) macromolecular catalysts as cavity resonators of the coherent photon field were probably the primordial minimal living systems; (iii) life might spread itself by inducing the catalytic processes and controlling them as to reorganize the systems of fermions-bosons-infons in the autonomous systems containing more infons and bosons; (iv) the existence of the "organisms" which process only information and energy is possible.

Opis:
The discussion on the possible influence of environmental electromagnetic pollution on biological microprocessors is undertaken in the context of bioelectronics, especially in connection with the electromagnetic theory of life. First, concepts and hypotheses of living systems as molecular computers, quantum molecular computers, biomolecular automata, etc., have been reviewed. Second, microtubules as microprocessors have been discussed. Third, some data on the natural and artificial electromagnetic environment have been referred in regard to their connection with living processes. Here, attention is paid to the attempts at linking information processing in microtubules with the external weak electromagnetic fields. Finally, bioplasma as a possible mechanism for resonant interactions between electromagnetic fields and biological systems is emphasized. It is also suggested that research on the control and processing of signals and/or information in microtubules may be essential for the studies on the origins of life.

Opis:
Protobiology as a science about the origin of life is based on the idea of chemical evolution. The bioelectronics conception, however, that life is a form of electromagnetic information suggests that it is not „chemical evolution” but „evolution of information” that can be accepted as a more basic one. The paper sought to develop, within the context of biosystemogenesis, the idea of a chemical-electronic coupling in organisms (the so-called quantum seam of life). The „quantum seam of life” is a thermodynamically optimal and open quantum system in which chemical and electronic process come about. It exists owing to electromagnetic information and manifests self-synchronization, metastable energetic state, and constant properties independent of evolution. From the point of view of the electromagnetic conception of the nature of life, the category of genesis (i.e. the genesis of life or biosystems) may be understood in a broader manner than it has been done up to now. First of all, it can be understood as electromagnetic biosystemogenesis. The life of earth would originate in information whose bearer was the electromagnetic field. Philosophical implications of this statement are discussed in the paper. It is suggested that nanotechnology and quantum optoelectronics may provide new possibilities of how to empirically test electromagnetic biosystemogenesis and the idea of the evolution of information. The significance of the concept of genesis may be of key importance for the models suggesting new, more adequate scenarios of the processes of the origin of life.

The problem of causality is presented in the context of the research devoted to biogenesis. The significant works concerning the philosophy of biogenesis and scientific theories of abiogenesis have been reviewed. Special attention is paid to: (i) the role of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics and quantum mechanics in the explaining of causal relations involved the origins of life, (ii) the need of constructing of a quantum logic of life. It is suggested that the causal connection is established by an information channel between a cause and its result.

Opis:
The subject of the presentation was to reveal the main components of the views of Rev. Włodzimierz Sedlak (31.10.1911–17.02.1993) concerning the origin of life. The development of these views passed through the following stages: 1) the theory of silicic life forms (1959–1967) which he labeled “the theory of siliconides”, 2) the bioelectronic model of abiogenesis (1967–1988), and 3) speculations about electromagnetic biogenesis. The basic claims of the theory of silicic life forms are the following: (a) silicon is an essential component of biosystems and fulfils significant roles in phylogenetically older forms of life; (b) the previous essential role of silicon in the organization of life has been reduced in higher organisms to the role of a microelement; (c) the attempts at the reconstruction of the chemical evolution of life should be undertaken, to extend it beyond the organic compounds of carbon, namely to those containing silicon and forming the most primitive forms of life on the Earth; (d) hypothetic silicic organisms made up the most primitive life on the Earth.. The main theses of bioelectronic model of abiogenesis are the following: (a) there exists the coupling between chemical reactions and electronic processes in organisms (he calls it “the quantum seam of life”); photons act as a coupling factor between these two classes of processes; (b) the existence the such coupling makes the generation and duration of the plasma state of particles possible in all metabolizing parts of the organism; (c) there exists bioplasma – a new state of matter – that is characteristic for living organisms only; (d) the first act of the creation of the chemical-electronic coupling is to be regarded as equivalent with biogenesis: (e) bioplasma existed well before the macroscopic organic morphological structures were formed and functioned already when the life was based on aluminosilicates. Sedlak’s speculation on the electromagnetic biogenesis implies that the evolution of biosphere began with the moment of birth of light, i.e. in one of the earliest phases of existence of Universe. God, identified by him with the Light, created life, possessing the luminous nature. Life never altered its electromagnetic foundation: either at any new stage, or at a new level of organization, or when the first human being was created. It seems that Sedlak’s works can be valuable for the present and future investigations aimed at the reconstruction of biogenesis. Although they are undervalued now, they should be regarded as containing many valuable intuitions. They deserve a thorough analysis and – where it is possible – empirical testing of implications drawn from them.

The article attempts at describing the recent advances in elucidation of anew aspect of the processes comprising the generation, transmission, receiving, processing, as well as storage of information by the means of various electromagnetic radiation. It is claimed that it is at least as important as the processes of various types of conversions of matter and energy. At the beginning, atheoretical framework for electromagnetic communication inside the living cell has been presented. Secondly, areview of life processes involving electromagnetic processes has been given. Thirdly, apossible role of hydrogen bonds in intracellular communication is dealt with, especially the F.Bistolfi's model of the hydrogen harps. Next, some very hypothetical concepts have been mentioned, as: electromagnetic information transfer between the Bose condensates in biosystems (originally proposed by H.Fröhlich), electromagnetically-mediated interaction between the domains of physical plasma inside the cell etc. Finally, the biophilosophical significance of the knowledge on this closer and closer investigated dimension of the nature of life has been emphasized.

A review has been given of the bioelectronic perspective of the investigation concerning enzymes as information processors in living cells. Firstly, the applications of some enzymes in biomolecular electronic devices (e.g. switchers, transistors, thermistors, biosensors, electronic gates, detectors etc.) have been taken into account. Secondly, theories and hypotheses of: living systems as natural computers, neurons and microtubules as biological microprocessors, electromagnetic communications between biostructures, enzymes as molecular automata etc. have been emphasized. In this connection, the electromagnetic theory of life has been mentioned. It is suggested that nanotechnology and nanobiology will be very useful in searching of the nanoprocessor function of enzymes in living cells. (263 refs.).

The critical discussion on the possible existence of the coupling between biochemical reactions and electronic processes in biological solids is undertaken in connection with the concept of bioplasma and the electromagnetic theory of life. Firstly, a review of more important denotations of the term "coupling" in various disciplines: cybernetics, physics, genetics, biochemistry, thermodynamics, etc. is made. Secondly, a review of related terms with the same designation: quantum seam of life, quantum generator of physical plasma, quantum of life, the least unit of life, quantum pacemaker, quantum junction of life, biological quantum amplifier, etc. has been given. Thirdly, properties, origins, and functions of the chemical-electronic coupling have been discussed. New terms as "photonic microprocessor" and "optoelectronic microrobot" have also been proposed.
