Opis:
Estimation of influence of land use changes to flood outflows from areas of the Roztocze Srodkowe and of the Krajenskie Lakeland were worked out basing on SCS-CN method. This method permits calculation from total rainfall a direct runoff as equivalent to effective rainfall. The original SCS-CN method in principle was worked out for catchments of cultivated areas. Present paper is focused on the idea of adaptation original method to forest conditions. The main parameter of this method - CN is a function e.g. of land use. The empirical values of parameter CNemp were calculated basing on hydro-meteorological data of flood outflows at representative catchments. The dependence between empirical value of parameter CNemp and his equivalent's value from original method is a basis idea of adaptation method SCS-CN to characteristics of investigated catchment. In consequence it gives then possibility to prognoses how the change of land use, e.g. forest stand reconstruction, afforestation, deforestation, change of field culture, significant change in infrastructure etc., will influence to flood outflows (change to water retention) at a representative areas (a quasi-homogeneous in relation to investigated catchment). The first analyzed catchment of the Krynica River (area 19.1 km(2), afforestation 49.3%) is representative for the,Tomaszow Lubelski Forest Division and quasi-representative to the Roztocze Srodkowe (Poland). The area of catchment is situated within the following units: macroregion - Roztocze, mesoregion - Roztocze Srodkowe; this area belong to IV Mazowiecko-Podlaska Land. On area of the Tomaszow Lubelski Forest Division predominate the rusty soils (42.65%) as well as the brown soils (26.51%). Associations of beech forests and oak-hornbeam forests predominate. Pine is the dominant species, covering 55.37% forested area, beech is found at 19.70%, oak at 11.07%, alder at 3.49%, fir at 3.24%, hornbeam at 1.73%, birch at 2.14% and larch at 1.19%, while other species constitute a highly valuable admixture in the biocenosis. On area of investigated catchment granulometric composition is following: loose sand 70%, loamy sand 15% and loamy sand on loamy gravel 15%. Average daily specific discharge (in investigation period 2009-2010) was on level 3.4 [1.s-1.km -2], and maximum to minimum suitably 17.2 to 1.0[1.s-1.km -2]. The second analyzed catchment of the river no. 17-86-1 is located in the III Wielkopolsko-Pomorska Land, the Two Krajenskie Lakeland District, the Wysoczyzna Krajenska mesoregion (Poland). The investigated catchment cover the area of 182.26ha; 174.02ha - 95% covered by forests, and 8.24ha - 5% arable land and meadows. The dominant soils are rusty soils (about 86% of catchment area) and similar. The dominant forest habitat types are: fresh coniferous forest (sign Bsw - in Polish standards) and fresh mixed coniferous forest (BMsw) - about 90% of catchment afforestetion area. Main species at afforestation area is ordinary pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) (93% of forest area). Average daily specific discharge (in investigation period 2004-2006) was on level 6.4[1.s-1.km -2], and minimum to maximum suitably 2.5 to 25.5[1.s-1.km -2]. The calculation were conducted using data of measuring rainy flood waves. The values of CNemp ware a base for introducing scenarios how changes of land use at investigation catchments are influencing to flood outflows (changing water retention).

Opis:
American black cherry Prunus serotina Ehrh., as in most of Europe, is an invasive species in Poland. Generative and vegetative dynamic propagation makes restoration of native tree species difficult and sometimes even impossible. In dominated communities it can effectively displace the herbaceous species. Hence, there are attempts to combat it, both for economic and protective reasons. The planned project aims (“The prevalence of American black cherry Prunus serotina Ehrh. in the Polish forests – the factors favoring and inhibiting the spread of the species, the models of tree stands susceptible and resistant to its expansion”) at identification of characteristics residing in habitat conditions and species stands composition and their storey’s structure conducive or inhibiting the expansion of P. serotina in Polish forests. The proposed studies will use first of all the information contained in the management plans of state forest holdings, and especially in the protection plans of Nature 2000 areas. On the basis of the full database, available with the consent of the General Directorate of State Forests, a statement regarding the occurrence is black cherry in the forest compartment and subcompartment will be developed. Next, the research methodology assumes the use of the characteristics of black cherry occurrence in a different forest plant storeys; stands and site factors identification that conducive and delay the spread of black cherry in the stands; develop models of tree stands susceptible and resistant to black cherry invasion; the necessary field research will be conducted according to the Polish physiographic division – two forest divisions from every natural-forest region – and they will concern: verification of the plant descriptions degree suitability of the degree of plant descriptions for determining the black cherry quality characteristics in the undergrowth; determination of the environmental occurrence conditions of P. serotina and P. padus L. in the case of their absence of a distinction in the stand descriptions. Realization of this project will allow to acquire new knowledge on the exact range of black cherry in Poland, the isolation of specific habitat and tree stand characteristics conducive or inhibiting its development, and thus facilitate the modeling of the stands potentially vulnerable and resistant to expansion. It is assumed that the project will provide detailed and comprehensive data on the black cherry occurrence on Polish territory, along with the diagnosis of the type of factors that contributed to its invasion. This knowledge will allow for remedial action to restrict and eliminate that species from forest ecosystems, which should be particularly important in developing conservation plans and especially in protection plans in the Nature 2000 areas in which conservation of natural habitats in good condition is our European responsibility. Simultaneously the project will gather rich research material, which may be the basis for future monographic study on this species. This study tested the hypothesis about the possibility of using information on the underbrush, contained in the stand descriptions forest management plans of Polish forest holdings, in studies of American black cherry. Verification was made by comparing the records in the database of tree stand description of 2004 with the results of the inventory of underbrush and black cherry in 256 forest sub-compartments Kowalewo Forest District – Szubin State Forest Division carried out in 2009. Established research hypothesis was confirmed in the environmental conditions conducive to the presence of this species. Therefore, in developing such models stand vulnerable to the expansion of black cherry, laborious and expensive tests can be replaced with an inventory analysis conducted on the basis of electronic databases of stands description.

Zielonka Forest
Opis:
The aim of this study is demonstrate trends of groundwater level changes in Zielonka Forest on the Experimental Forest District Potasze example. The study included a period of 40 years (1970–2009). Variability of groundwater conditions is basis of water relation ratings, or trends of changes on given area, particularly on forest area. The Zielonka Forest is situated in the middle section of the Warta river catchment, in the central part of the Wielkopolska region, and its western border lies about 6 kilometres north-east of Poznan. The area is situated in the western part of the Wielkopolska-Mazovian climatic region. The natural landscape is of early glacial type of Pleistocene and Holocene formation. Postglacial drifts, deposits from the Poznan stage of the Würm glaciations, are the main parent materials of the soils in this area. The granulometric composition is formed by sands with a low clay content, overlying loose sands with admixture of gravel and slightly sandy clay. Scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.) is the dominant tree species but also oak (Quercus robur. L., Q. petrea (Matt.) Liebl.), alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn., Alnus incana (L.) Moench.), larch (Larix sp. Mill.) and rarely spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) occur there. The predominant forest site types are: fresh mixed coniferous forest, fresh coniferous forest, wet coniferous forest and alder swamp forest. The greatest yearly fluctuations in groundwater level were observed in alder/ash swamp forest site types, where groundwater level was the highest (in shallow groundwater). Extended the meteorological observations on Zielonka station for 1970–1985, based on meteorological observation from Poznan station are reasonable. The resulting regression and correlation coefficients relation for precipitation sum, mean air temperature (monthly and annual) are statistically significant on customarily accepted levels of significance α = 0.05. Consequently complete data of precipitation and air temperatures have been obtained for the study period 1970–2009 for the Zielonka Forest representative meteorological station in Zielonka village. Time trend for annual precipitation sum in Zielonka Forest in the period 1970–2009 is not statistically significant. However, time trend over that period of the average annual air temperature in the Zielonka Forest is statistically significant and amounts to about +0.05°C/year. These trends for the last 10 years during the study period are respectively -0.28 mm/year and +0.11°C/year. These figures can be considered as a confirmation of the adverse climate changes described in the IPCC Report (2007), in relation to the studied area. For the analysis of groundwater conditions selected years 1970, 2002 and 2009. According to the meteorological conditions (precipitation, air temperature), these three years can be regarded as the average (normal). Average groundwater levels in Zielonka Forest (based on Forest District Potasze analyses) throughout the 40-year study period (1970–2009) fell by about 50 cm, while in the last seven- years, fell by 20 cm. Assuming an average porosity of the aquifer layers to 34%, respectively in these periods decreases the ground retention were thus about 160 mm and 60 mm. Variability of groundwater levels has been reduced twice (variation coefficient of groundwater levels dropped by half). The largest groundwater decreases recorded on forest site types. Much lower on coniferous forest and alder/ash alder swamp forest site type. Groundwater lowering in Zielonka Forest can be associated with intensified adverse climate changes. But this is not the only explanation. The second factor, adversely effect on groundwater conditions in Zielonka Forest and its buffer zone, which was not the subject of this paper, is so-called anthropopressure. For example residential and recreational buildings, manufacture and process plant, etc.
