Opis:
The Communist Workers’ Party of Poland (Komunistyczna Partia Robotnicza Polski) was formed on December 16, 1918 and operated legally during the first half a year of its activity. The resurgent Polish state guaranteed its citizens an extensive range of democratic freedoms, which were also enjoyed by the communists. The main area of their activity was the Councils of Workers Delegates (CWD, Rady Delegatów Robotniczych), which they wanted to transform into alternatives for administrative and governmental institutions. The communists wished to establish a soviet republic. For this reason, they carried out activities in the CWD and at rallies. They also organized strikes and became involved in anti-government activities. State authorities reacted vigorously by declaring a state of emergency in the area of the former Kingdom of Poland on April 1, 1919 and by making numerous arrests of communist activists for anti-state activities. However, the split of the CWD in June/July 1919 was a decisive factor that made the communists go into hiding. Nevertheless, an outright act of outlawing them was never passed. The Communist Workers’ Party of Poland and communists in general continued, although no longer on such a scale, to use existing democratic institutions for their own purposes.

Opis:
Files collected in archives play an extremely important role in historical studies; without them, research would be virtually impossible. Documents on the history of the communist movement in the Pomeranian Voivodeship in the years 1920–1938 are extremely dispersed, which is related to the administrative changes that affected these areas during the existence of the Second Polish Republic, among other things. This article discusses the Polish archives that collect documents on the history of the communist movement along with a brief overview of the contents of archival groups and the substantial value of these documents.

Opis:
The defeat of the German Empire in World War I contributed to the radicalisation of social and political sentiment in Germany. In the territory of Upper Silesia, a borderland of the German Reich, these conflicts strengthened national antagonisms. In such a situation the Communist Party of Upper Silesia was created at the end of 1918, achieving serious organisational successes and greatly influencing the attitude of a large number of industrial workers. These local communists sought to channel radical social moods into a communist revolution, but they collided with and lost to Polish and German nationalism. At the time of the decisive battle for Upper Silesia’s nationalities, the communist movement was seriously weakened and did not matter in the struggle for the future of the region. After the division of Upper Silesia in 1922, the structures of the Communist Party of Upper Silesia were incorporated on a territorial basis into the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) or the Communist Party of Poland (KPP). The communists operating in the Polish Silesia (Silesian voivodship) region managed to take advantage of mass strikes in 1923 and led to civil unrest. An attempt to escalate this tension was hindered by the pacification action carried out by state authorities. The most important activists were imprisoned and the party itself had to go underground, sharing the fate of the KPP. The communists active in the KPD also tried to lead the population of the German part of Upper Silesia into revolt but, although they were close to success several times, did not manage to channel the strike into a communist revolution. However, they remained one of the three most influential political parties in the German Upper Silesian Province.

Opis:
This article examines the historiography of the Communist Party of Western Belarus. This organisation operated in the north-eastern part of the Second Polish Republic. The current state of research on its history is illustrated by several examples from Polish, Soviet, and Belarusian historiography. The author analyses the changes that have taken place in historiography from the 1950s to the present day, including the particular aspects that attracted the attention of historians. The categories of publications (monographs, source publications) are described and research questions posed in the later part of the article.

Opis:
The Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History in Moscow is home to the largest collection of documents on the history of the Polish communist movement in the interwar period. Among other files, the documents of the Communist Party of Poland and others related to Polish communists in the Comintern are stored there. is rich collection is currently not very popular among historians, although it is necessary for research into the history of the Polish communist movement. In Russian editions of archival sources or published  correspondence of Soviet leaders, subjects related to the activities of Polish communists are poorly represented. There is no edition of sources on the Comintern’s attitude toward Poland in the years 1919-1943. In contemporary Russia, a small number of historians deal with the subject of the Polish communistmovement. It is not popular among Polish researchers, either.
