Opis:
This article constitutes a review of a monographic volume of University of Łódź publication “Acta Universitatis Lodziensis. Folia Historica”, which is dedicated to the participation of foreign volunteers and regular soldiers in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). In ten articles nine authors present the fight on the both sides of the war – rightist and leftist – of the representatives of following nationalities: French, Soviets, Poles, Americans, British, Swiss, Germans, Portuguese, Italians, and Moroccans. The alien intervention (German – Condor Legion, Italian – Corpo Truppe Volontarie, and Soviet – International Brigades) in that war is explained as well as most important circumstances related to the participation of foreigners in that conflict, among other, mechanisms of the intervention and methods to hide it, recruitment, motivations, initiatives, numbers, social position, ideology, internal conflicts, oppression, etc. A review is completed by remarks on research dedicated to the Spanish Civil War.

Opis:
The years 1944/1945-1947 are the key turning point in the history of Cracow. 1945 in the year of liberation from the Nazi occupation, and as such is related to the dreams of independent Polsnd. The city was not destroyed so the authorities had to deal with large numbers of newcomers, housing and provisioning problems as well as epidemics. Providing proper supplies was not easy. Communcation was defective. Yet, Cracow tradition of spendingfree time above floated above all probles. Family and social relations were rebuilt and new ones were cultivated. People strolled through the streets of the Old Town or through the walkways of the Planty Park, attended dance and festive parties even through they were already under the watchful eye of the authorities that were gradually taking over the control over the society. they crashed the opposition, threatend people, monopolized the power in the hands of the Communist party. New customs and that duties that they imposed led to a strong polatization of social attitudes. Two standpoints developed - acceptance and negation. Those who accepted the state of affairs wanted to live normal lives, even with the polish Worker's Party in the background, while those who negated the reality openly manifested their aversion towards the authorities. The year 1947 is the endof the first phase of Stalinization, however, Cracow typicality is kind of untypicality on the map of the People's Republic of Poland. the Communists had great problems with imposing their authority in Cracow. It was here that the attitude of awareness and social resistance was not fully destroyed, and  the customs that the lives of the citzens were so firm that destroying them was a considerable problem for the Communists.

Opis:
Article presents life path of Jan Kruczek – during the Second Polish Republic – police officer battling common banditism and actions of communist groups, during the World War II Kriminalpolizei officer and also a co-worker of the Government Delegation to the country, commander of the State Security Corps in the Rzeszów district. After Red Army invaded Rzeszów district, Kruczek was engaged in the structure of the National Party, providing distribution ofthe illegal press and performing intelligence activities. For his exemplary service to the Polish State during the Second Republic of Poland, as well as his underground activities during the German occupation and the Lublin Committee he faced undeserved repressions during Polish People’s Republic. After the fall of communism, Jan Kruczek “Nurt” should be a model tothe current officers protecting the nation’s safety. Undertaking underground activities at the expense of the personal happiness places him in the pantheon of people who for the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Poland. Based on the acts created by the communist security apparatus, this article brings closer the realities of the functioning of the independence conspiracy in the period of the People’s Republic of Poland, taking into account – so difficult to grasp – personal relations.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the research of the archival sources for studying the stay of communists in the Lutsk prison in the years 1919–1939. In the interwar period the communist movement tried to separate Volhynia and Eastern Galicia from the Second Polish Republic and was a serious threat to the Polish authorities in the region. According to the Polish law, communist activity was illegal and criminalised. The Lutsk prison was one of the institutions of the penitentiary system of Poland where those convicted for communist activities served their sentences and where investigations against others were continued. It is revealed that the materials of the State Archives of the Volhynia Region in Lutsk (Ukraine), the Central State Archive of Public Organisations of Ukraine in Kyiv (Ukraine) and the Polish Central Archives of Modern Records (Poland) are sufficiently reflective of the research on the communists’ stay in the Lutsk prison between the two world wars. Taking into account the statistics of that time and comparing the documents of these institutions with the materials of other archival institutions, the memories of prisoners and representatives of the authorities, as well as the interwar press allows us to create a complete picture of the daily life of the communist prisoner in Lutsk prison from their imprisonment until their release from its walls.

Opis:
The article discusses the current historiography of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine (CPWU), the main communist organisation in the south-eastern provinces of the Second Polish Republic. Under that name the party was established in 1923 and from 1925 to 1938 (i.e. when the party was disbanded) it possessed the status of an autonomous organisation of the Communist Party of Poland. In fact, during that period the CPWU was directly dependent on the leadership of the communist party in the USSR, which is important to note. Despite several decades of Ukraine being ruled by communists, the CPWU had not been studied satisfactorily or completely impartially by Soviet historians. The unsatisfactory state of knowledge of the CPWU deprives us of opportunities to understand the important role the party played in preparing the ground for Soviet rule, which began (with a three-year gap) in 1939.

Opis:
In interwar Poland, one of the tasks of the military counterintelligence was to combat communist influence, which was rightly judged as one of the most eminent dangers that threatened the state. The Communist Party of Poland carried out its sabotage through the Central Military Department, which the Polish counterintelligence considered an integral part and tool of the General Staff of the Soviet Army. This article discusses the activity of a communist cell in the 14th Infantry Regiment stationed in Włocławek, as well as the liquidation of that cell as a result of cooperation between the Polish State Police, military counterintelligence and gendarmerie. It also discusses the court proceedings against members of the cell at the Military Regional Court no. 8 in Grudziądz.

Opis:
In this article, the author assesses the current state of research on the Polish communist movement. She pays special attention to the role played by Polish Workers’ Party structures such as the Party History Department, which existed and operated in the years 1946–1957 at the Polish Workers’ Party Central Committee. She explores two major problems faced by communist researchers. One is related to the availability of and access to primary sources, specifically the archival collection from Russian archives related to this subject. Another issue is the difficulties of analysing and interpreting party-generated sources.
