Opis:
According to the literary sources, Lvov was an ideal place, compared to Arcadia, which had a wide range of the Galician cultural diversity. The aim of this article is to prove that this is not true. The opinion was formed on the basis of the evaluation of the political government ruling the Galician capital since the Revolutions of 1848 up to the World War I. Most of the decisions which were made – especially those concerning the legal basis dened functions of the town institutions and the elections – were polycentric and discriminated against the ethnical minorities living in the town. During the time of autonomy in Lvov, most of the citizens were deprived of the right to participate in the town’s politics. These limitations resulted from the electoral system and the town’s statue of 1870. Hence, the idea of equality of people, political and social integration of all social groups creating one town was abstract and far dierent from the literary and poetical picture of the Galician capital.

Opis:
This article describes the history of the emancipation of the Ukrainian women of Galicia – the Austrian province and later in the Polish state – during the First World War and the post-war years. The focus of this research is the participation of women in combat actions, social activities, and family relationships. The events of war had a signicant impact on the everyday life of women in the household, both ideologically and mentally. The role of Ukrainian women at the front and in the public sphere is analyzed in the context of ‘internal emancipation’ by overcoming traditional prejudices that have limited female space, especially those of the household. During the war the daily space of women signicantly expanded – a woman could become not only a nurse, but the defender of the house, as she had to deal with the daily problems associated with raising children, community initiatives, or concerns for the man who had been mobilized to the front. The critical situation of the war accelerated the process of the emancipation of women as individuals and forced women to give up the traditional limitations of family and home. Ukrainian women found the space to implement dierent skills and began to understand themselves through the prism of their own lives and intimate experiences, not just as a part of a man’s everyday life. These changes were perceived in society in dierent ways. Still, mancipation was not extensive, as many women were afraid to make changes. The huge patriarchal world still dominated, but the issue of the civil rights of women, including the right for self-realization, was impossible to ignore.

The article presents the activity of district councilors from the People's Movement in Nowy Sącz in 1909 who had the greatest influence on the local politics. The were building their position from yhe end of the 19 th century whe the Peasant Party Union, the first peasnt party in Poland, was established in Nowy Sącz. When a chance occurred, after the death of the district marshal Władysław Głębocki, the peasants decided to take over the authorit. It happend in circumstances that raised legal doubts, particulary among the burghers who had been govering until that moment. During the goverment of the Concil led by the peasant marshal Stanisław Potoczek, financial irregularites related to the previous activity of the self-government were discovered. Apart from the Nowy Sącz burghers, blamed for the irrerularites was Karol Merkl, the previous secretary of the Concil who was responsible for the treasury. He was closely related to the financial elite of the city. The battue that broke out around Karol Merkl concerned even his private life and led to his dismissal. Further activity of the peasant council was interrupted by the decision of the Regency in Lviv which outlawed the council and its resolutions.

This article examines the relations that existed between soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Army, especially those belonging to the Polish Legions, and the inhabitants of Limanowa during World War I. I show similarities and differences between the local attitudes towards the Imperial-Royal Army at large and those towards the Legions. In Polish historiography, scholars tend to write that people from Limanowa helped the legionaries from the beginning, more so than other Galician prefectures (powiaty). Based on documents from the National Archive of Kraków and relevant literature, including reminiscences, I verify this view and demonstrate that propaganda from the interwar period changed the perception of this episode.

Opis:
Ideological pursuits and political practices of Ukrainian Christian social movement in Galicia at the end of the XIX century – the first quarter of the XX century that was an important element of Ukrainian conservative tradition is analyzed in the article. This movement, headed by Oleksandr Barvinsky, emerged as a response to the rejection of the Polish-Ukrainian rapprochement, the “new era” of 1890–1894, by members of Ukrainian political movement of Narodovtsi (Ukrainophiles). e movement not only supported but also promoted conservative principals of national development in the Ukrainian society of Galicia. The principal motto of Christian social movement was created under the influence of a Krakow-based group of Polish conservatives known as “Stańczycy”. The principal core of the movement was the refusal from what they believe to be ineffective oppositional politics and implementation of “organic labour” concept with further contribution to raising political consciousness as well as the economic and level of the Ukrainian society in Galicia. Members of the Christian social movement paid considerable attention to religiosity and insisted on an important role played by the Greek Catholic Church in raising young people and political life. Following the ideals of the “New era”, Oleksandr Barvinsky and his followers attempted to find the Ukrainian-Polish path for understanding in Galician atmosphere that was becoming more and more strained. In practice, Christian social movement ended up attempting to create a functional political organization which turned out a disaster. Political failures of the movement were caused by adverse ideological and political climate of that time and the inner weakness of the very movement. Despite the termination of political activity of movement at the beginning of the First World War, Oleksandr Barvinsky fruitlessly tried to breathe new life into political structures of the movement during the war and until the early 1920s. Taking into consideration the new interwar reality where different radical movements proliferated, a conservative and moderate Christian social movement which remained a creation of the Habsburg era had no chance for success.

Opis:
The main purpose of this article was to present, the functioning of the self-government of the Galician village by the example of the commune Brzezowa. The many issues related to the activities of local authorities have been analyzed: the practice of granting the right of belonging to a commune (“Heimathrecht”), ensuring the safety of residents, educational policies as well as maintenance of local roads. The source basis was the Book of Protocols of the Commune Council in Brzezowa for the years 1904–1934. In addition, research has been carried out at the National Archives in Kraków and at the Parish Archives in Dobczyce.  The legal acts constituting the basis for the functioning of the city authorities could not be omitted. It was therefore possible not only to recreate the activities of local authorities, but also to show many aspects of the life of the inhabitants of this Galician vilage.

Opis:
The article discusses the current historiography of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine (CPWU), the main communist organisation in the south-eastern provinces of the Second Polish Republic. Under that name the party was established in 1923 and from 1925 to 1938 (i.e. when the party was disbanded) it possessed the status of an autonomous organisation of the Communist Party of Poland. In fact, during that period the CPWU was directly dependent on the leadership of the communist party in the USSR, which is important to note. Despite several decades of Ukraine being ruled by communists, the CPWU had not been studied satisfactorily or completely impartially by Soviet historians. The unsatisfactory state of knowledge of the CPWU deprives us of opportunities to understand the important role the party played in preparing the ground for Soviet rule, which began (with a three-year gap) in 1939.
