Opis:
China has been expanding its presence on the South China Sea, which causes tensions in the region. However, when different aspects of the situation are analysed, an open armed conflict seems hardly possible. Looking at China’s activity in this body of water, it appears the Chinese state strives to safeguard its interests, primarily the economic ones, nonetheless it should be emphasized that it pursues its superpower ambitions at the same time.

Opis:
The social and economic developments observed in recent decades in the PRC have led to a significant increase in economic and military capabilities. China is aspiring to the role of world power. Despite the assurances given by President Xi and the Chairman of the Communist Party on China’s peaceful development, the voices and opinions expressed are the opposite. Such an approach will be dominant in coming years and one cannot exclude a possibility of provocation, even armed intervention, if China finds that its national interest is threatened. The article presents the perspectives of PRC in playing the role of world peace guarantor.

Opis:
This article examines Chinese-Philippine cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This is an intriguing issue because, in 2016, many people predicted that China would exclude the Philippines from the BRI framework due to their dispute over the Scarborough Shoal. Former Philippine President Benigno Aquino III had criticized China’s South China Sea maritime expansion, but Duterte changed the country’s foreign policy in 2016. He followed China’s advice and moved forward, resolving differences between the two countries and developing a healthy bilateral relationship. This article found that the BRI framework is critical in this shift in diplomatic relations. China and the Philippines’ interdependence, as well as the shift in identity from an enemy to a partner, have both contributed to the improvement of China-Philippines relations.
