Opis:
The article presents the results of archaeological rescue excavations conducted on the battlefield of Wagram. As a result of prospection with the use of metal detectors, more than 7000 objects connected with this event were found. During the excavations, more than 500 archaeological features were unearthed, including 25 graves related to the battle of the 5th and 6th July 1809, and the Habsburg army camp set up beforehand. The archaeological objects and features discovered provide new information about the camp life of soldiers in the Napoleonic era, the battle itself and about how bodies of the fallen soldiers were treated after the battle.

Opis:
Preventive archaeology in Romania has been only quite recently formally regulated by law. Even though the principles established by the Malta Convention, which regulates the guidelines for the protection of archaeological heritage, are complied with, at least in theory, there are numerous shortcomings at the national level. Based on discussions with several archaeologists and other stakeholders involved in archaeological research and heritage protection in Romania, we would like to present some of the issues raised. We offer recent convincing examples, but also potential solutions to these issues, which clearly affect Romania’s cultural heritage protection and research. We refer to both the difficulties encountered by archaeologists due to the confusion and shortcomings present in the legal texts, but also to the inability of the authorities to enforce the existing laws.

Opis:
The article is a preliminary presentation of the project “Inventory of selected relics of the Battle of Warsaw 1920”, commissioned by the Masovian Monuments Preservation Officer and carried out in 2020 – the centenary of the battle, known also as the “Miracle on the Vistula”. The research was carried out by the Hereditas Foundation in cooperation with the Forest Research Institute and the Historical and Educational Association of 7th Regiment of Vistula Lancers in Halinów. This initiative was an interdisciplinary undertaking based, among others, on the cooperation of a team of specialists in the fields of archaeology, history, geography, remote sensing and geoinformatics, as well as forestry. The main discussion in the article focuses on introductory issues concerning the archaeology of the Battle of Warsaw - archaeological research, concentrating mainly on non-intrusive and inventory activities. At the same time, the article contributes to the discussion about, among others, the definition, recognition and protection of battlefield relics – the so-called large-scale archaeological sites. The publication presents selected research results (numerous identified relics of armed conflicts – mainly field fortifications – from the area of the Warsaw Bridgehead, primarily from World War I and II, as well as from the Polish-Bolshevik war). The text also discusses basic elements of the research methodology, based (mainly) on GIS tools and data sourced from the Information System of National Protection Against Extraordinary Risks (ISOK) – obtained during airborne laser scanning. The key element of the project, and at the same time one of the results of the research, is a data set (prepared for heritage services or specific land managers) in the form of a spatial information system known as “H/A-GIS Bitwa Warszawska 1920”.

Opis:
During the excavations on site 17 in Nienowice, Jarosław district, a Przeworsk culture settlement was discovered with relics of buildings, hearths and ovens. The movable material is represented by specific, carelessly made hand-made and workshop pottery which, from the point of view of technology, refers to the materials connected with Dacian cultural environment. Apart from the pottery, among others, a glass melon-shaped bead and a sandstone plate were discovered. The settlement dates back to the late period of development of the Przeworsk culture (stage C1b/C2-phase D) and is connected with the processes of settlement on the right-bank Sandomierz Basin. The economy of the inhabitants was not based on agriculture, but, most probably, on exploiting the specific natural environment. The traces of activities from the period of World War I manifested themselves in a form of trenches and some movable material, including pieces of barbed wire, sapper’s equipment, ammunition - both Russian and Austro-Hungarian. The discovered fortifications are a part of the fortifications on the line of the Vishnya and are connected with the activities conducted after the Gorlice offensive in 1915.
