Opis:
In the last 20 years, Palaeolithic archaeology in Portugal has produced some of the most revolutionary and important sites in the world (e.g., Côa Valley Palaeolithic rock art; Lagar Velho child-burial and the 400,000-year-old human skull from Aroeira cave) nonetheless, a hiatus visible the map of geographical distribution of these sites is obvious and means nothing but the lack of research and not the absence of human habitation in the past. Nevertheless, some new important Palaeolithic sites have been recently identified during preventive archaeological works. We will present new data concerning these new sites and a framework for a program that can help archaeologists working in preventive archaeology to ensure faster identification of sites, improving performance of archaeological interventions and reducing the economic impact for developers.

Opis:
The paper is meant as a springboard for a discussion on the issue of archaeological finds in forested areas, with regard to the situation in Poland. Firstly, the issue of identifying cultural heritage in forested areas will be discussed, with a particular emphasis on the role and significance of the latest non-invasive technologies, especially laser scanning (LiDAR). Another element of the paper is the issue of protecting cultural and environmental heritage, therefore, the issue requiring an interdisciplinary approach, the necessity to work out optimal solutions, at the same time recognising the two aforementioned groups of historic objects that require integrated activities, as well as large-scale and long-term strategies. Examples of current activity will be presented by referring to the work that is being / has been realised, using the experience gained from scientific projects or institutional activities in Poland. The paper is directed towards “preventive activities to save archaeological objects in forested areas” and answering the question – how to effectively and optimally identify, examine, protect, manage and present historic heritage in forested areas. The paper fits in with tasks related to “Inventorying cultural heritage“, which are carried out within the assignment commissioned by the State Treasury – the State Forests National Forest Holding - General Forest Management.

Opis:
The article is a preliminary presentation of the project “Inventory of selected relics of the Battle of Warsaw 1920”, commissioned by the Masovian Monuments Preservation Officer and carried out in 2020 – the centenary of the battle, known also as the “Miracle on the Vistula”. The research was carried out by the Hereditas Foundation in cooperation with the Forest Research Institute and the Historical and Educational Association of 7th Regiment of Vistula Lancers in Halinów. This initiative was an interdisciplinary undertaking based, among others, on the cooperation of a team of specialists in the fields of archaeology, history, geography, remote sensing and geoinformatics, as well as forestry. The main discussion in the article focuses on introductory issues concerning the archaeology of the Battle of Warsaw - archaeological research, concentrating mainly on non-intrusive and inventory activities. At the same time, the article contributes to the discussion about, among others, the definition, recognition and protection of battlefield relics – the so-called large-scale archaeological sites. The publication presents selected research results (numerous identified relics of armed conflicts – mainly field fortifications – from the area of the Warsaw Bridgehead, primarily from World War I and II, as well as from the Polish-Bolshevik war). The text also discusses basic elements of the research methodology, based (mainly) on GIS tools and data sourced from the Information System of National Protection Against Extraordinary Risks (ISOK) – obtained during airborne laser scanning. The key element of the project, and at the same time one of the results of the research, is a data set (prepared for heritage services or specific land managers) in the form of a spatial information system known as “H/A-GIS Bitwa Warszawska 1920”.

The text presents the phenomenon of YouTube channels dedicated to recreating the life of primitive man. The prototype was David Malina from Australia, who launched the Primitive Technology channel in 2015. He went to the forest taking nothing but camera and shorts with him. For his viewers, he re-created the “technologies” available to ancient cultures. Imitators have quickly occurred. Currently, there are over 30 channels on YouTube, that are based on David’s original. The text characterizes these channels, critiques by, both, highlighting strengths and indicating the potential for use for purposes other than YouTube entertainment.

The paper discusses the discovery of a logboat in Lake Kromszewickie. The description of circumstances of the discovery is preceded by a brief biological and geographical characterisation of the basin and a reference to the findings of archaeological fieldwalking. Further in the article, a detailed description of the site and the discovered object is presented. The dugout, resting at a depth of approx. 7 m, is 4.25 m long and 0.42 m wide. At a short distance from it, a bovine horn and deer antlers were found. Based on the typology by W. Ossowski, it can be carefully assumed that the described logboat matches the characteristics of similar objects from the 14th century.

Opis:
In France, is archaeology really preventive in the sense that it is be based on a really effective predictive system (archaeology a priori) to find sustainable solutions for heritage protection? Or is preventive archaeology simply a reformulation of the rescue digging, a posteriori, and can only exist in the shadow of the dynamics of land use planning? Is there only one preventive archaeology, or are there several? On one hand, that of the major construction projects of the territorial development and, on the other, that related to the construction of small suburban single-family houses and projects of school canteens. It will thus be a question of presenting legal, financial, organizational and institutional mechanics of French archaeology. It will also be necessary to examine the consequences of the French doctrine in different fields: methodological and scientific, but also economic, political, social, identity, ecological, human and, more particularly, its influence on its key actors: the archaeologists themselves.

This article deals with preventive archaeology issues in the Republic of Latvia. Legislative bacground provides presence of archaeologists in construction projects. During last decade in the Latvia the largest share of carried out archaeological fieldwork are archaeological supervisions. Despite of small scale rescue excavations and archaeological supervisions significant archaeological data has been collected on further investigations on historical development of ancient towns. As examples are presented the most interesting discoveries in the two towns located in the Western part of the Latvia – Kuldīga and Ventspils. Archaeological investigations of the town streets in Kuldīga, carried out by M. Lūsēns, supplemented the reconstruction and localization of old Kuldīga, mostly based on information found in written sources. Small-scale preventive archaeological projects that have taken place in the seaside town Ventspils has resulted in a study of A.Vijups on the impact of dune erosion processes on historical development of town.

Preventive archaeology in Romania has been only quite recently formally regulated by law. Even though the principles established by the Malta Convention, which regulates the guidelines for the protection of archaeological heritage, are complied with, at least in theory, there are numerous shortcomings at the national level. Based on discussions with several archaeologists and other stakeholders involved in archaeological research and heritage protection in Romania, we would like to present some of the issues raised. We offer recent convincing examples, but also potential solutions to these issues, which clearly affect Romania’s cultural heritage protection and research. We refer to both the difficulties encountered by archaeologists due to the confusion and shortcomings present in the legal texts, but also to the inability of the authorities to enforce the existing laws.

Despite the commitments stemming from the Malta Convention, archaeological contractors in Poland have no legal obligation to disseminate their research. In consequence, the vast majority of the results, in particular those of rescue excavations, remain unpublished. For the team of the Profil-Archeo Publishing House, this disproportion became a stimulus for establishing a “Saved Archaeological Heritage” publishing series open to all parties involved in archaeological heritage protection in Poland. The overarching goal of the series is to provide public access to high-quality information about the heritage being destroyed - or rather the part that has been “saved” thanks to preventive excavations (a form of conservation by record). So far, seven volumes of the main series and three volumes of the “Miniatures” series have been published. In this paper, the authors report successes and problems related to the project, and postulate legal changes that should include, in particular, the obligation to publish the results of archaeological research.

Opis:
Rescue archaeology in Russia is full of contradictions. The apologetic approach to archaeology focuses solely on vast areas covered by excavations, discoveries and investments of millions. But the reality is more complex than that. This article addresses the transformations that took place in rescue archaeology in the 1980s, during “Perestroika”, and in particular in Moscow. Not everyone can withstand the temptation of money. Commercial interests have supplanted the Science in many cases, including that of Moscow. In the meantime, in many Old Russian cities (Pskov, Tver, Vladimir, etc.), the works were conducted in an exemplary manner, thanks to pre-existing traditions of research. Authorities’ demands to free land from the burden of archaeological heritage have led to shifting the focus of archaeological exploration now, identifying the boundaries of archaeological monuments became the key objective, a task that remains basically impossible, as said boundaries are of a purely formal nature. Excavations of empty spaces within archaeological sites have become typical for rescue archaeology and form modern “informational noise”. At the same time, archaeological research carried out on an unprecedented scale, even including the “empty” trenches, provide unique data on spatial and temporal structure of human activity, as exemplified by exploration of the Angara river banks during the construction of the Boguchany Dam.
