What do parents know about their children’s vocabulary? A questionnaire/checklist study of lexical development in children aged 2–6The paper presents a study on lexical development of Polish children aged 2–6. Three tools were constructed for this purpose: “The Child Lexicon Development Questionnaire/Checklist”, “The Questionnaire: Communication and Family Routines“ and a personal questionnaire. All were filled in by children’s parents. The first tool comprised nouns, verbs and adjectives drawn in a layered drawing from the Frequency List of Polish Language Corpus (PWN, 2004). The next two consisted of questions related to interactions in the family, social environment and family SES. Data from 148 children were analyzed. Results revealed non-linear lexical growth with age, positive impact of diversified interactions with parents as well as of a number of different games/play situations with peers on children’s vocabulary. Interactions with parents mainly affected noun and adjective vocabulary, while the number of plays with peers affected verb vocabulary.

Patterns of interaction in the families with an adolescent child and with an adult childEffective functioning of the family system depends on its ability to adjust to inevitable changes associated with the development of all the members. Patterns of familial communication develop as a child grows up. Adolescence seems to be a period, when a change in the attitude of parents toward their child is required; parents should begin treating the child as an adult. The purpose of the present study was to identify differences in patterns of parents-child interaction at the beginning and at the end of adolescence. Two groups of families were investigated: with an adolescent child (lower secondary school students (“gimnazjum”)) and with an adult child (university students). Experimental method was used to assess patterns of communication and its effi ciency. Factor analysis was employed to reveal basic patterns of interaction. They were associated with the leading role of one of the members. Four different patterns were identifi ed: „child-centred”, „mother-centred”, „father-centred” and without a leader. The patterns occurred irrespective of a family having an adolescent or an adult child. Surprisingly, it was parental education which turned out to be associated with communication pattern. Mothers in „mother-centred” families were signifi cantly better educated than other mothers. Communication in these families was the most effi cient. „Child-centred” pattern was linked with the father’s poor education. Communication in these families was less effi cient. In the present study, patterns of familial communication did not correlate with a child’s age. Perhaps these patterns are not as fl exible as expected. The main conclusion of this study is that probably other factors influence patterns of parents-child interaction

Opis:
Trivers (1974) argued that offspring demand much more parental investment than parents want to give. This conflict of interest stems from a genetic conflict. Parents are genetically equally related to all of their offspring (the coefficient of relatedness r = 0.5; children share 50% genes of each of parents) and, for the parents, they present the same value as the “vehicle” of their genes. For this reason, parents are selected to balance investment among their offspring. For the offspring, it is a different standpoint: for each “full” sibling (r = 0.5) its value is twice as much to the other sibling (because it has 100% of its own genes, and the second sibling shares only 50% of its genes), and its value is fourfold higher than the value of a half-sibling (r = 0.25). The “selfish” children, driven by their own genetic interest, try to obtain more parental investment than their parents intend to provide, even at their siblings’ disadvantage. In this situation, a parent–offspring conflict arises that concerns the distribution of parental investment, and what is important, one can expect a sibling rivalry for these resources. In this paper the social and psychological consequences of parent – offspring conflict are discussed: i.a. infanticide, mate preference conflict, sibling rivalry and allomothering as a way in which parent–offspring can be reduced.

Opis:
This paper presents theoretical framework of mother’s caregiving system, that is the goal-corrected behavioral system reciprocal to attachment. It is guided by mental representations of self as a caregiver, child as an object of protection and mutual relation. Caregiving representational system is influenced by the adult’s history of attachment and current experiences with the child, his/her characteristics and social-contextual factors. Development of the caregiving system from childhood to adulthood, and particularly during transition to parenthood, is presented.

Cognitive and behavioral therapy in work with parent and childThe article will discuss the rules of work with parents and children in preventing programs based on cognitive and behavioral therapy (among others “Incredible Years” Carolyn Webster-Stratton, “Coping Power” John Lochman; “Problem Solving Skills Traning” Alan Kazdin). It will be stressed that learning particular parenting skills goes far beyond the question “how to do something” and it is always based on reference to the world of values. A notion of a pyramid will be introduced as a metaphor of building relations between a parent and a child.
