Opis:
The role of family and peers in the development of compulsive buying tendency among teenagersSince the 1990s, one could observe a growing focus on children’s and teenagers’ consumption behavior, especially their influence on family decisions. Growing up in the consumption culture may lead to developing dysfunctional consumer behavior, e.g. compulsive buying. Compulsive buying is defined as chronic, pathological purchasing that becomes a response to negative events or feelings and ultimately results in harmful consequences. The purpose of the research was to establish the impact of family acquisition and expenditure patterns and susceptibility to peer influence on compulsive buying. The analysis has revealed that compulsive buying depends significantly on teens’ susceptibility to peer influence. The study has confi rmed the impact of incorrect family acquisition, expenditure pattern and gender.

Adolescents psychological reactance: The role of source and direction  of social pressure on uniforming clothes in schoolThis paper is a research report over psychological reactance among adolescents. The reactance was provoked by the experimental situation, which was modeled on Jack Brehm’s works. The phenomenon of reactance was measured on the adolescents experience field linked with the project of uniforming clothes in schools. It was assumed, that this project is in the area of great interest and is very important for adolescents, in addition it can be viewed as social pressure, which provoke the reactance reaction. The result show, that there egzists the global resistance toward discussed problem.

Personality traits and adolescents’ decisions concerning education and career planningOne of the most signifi cant tasks confronting adolescents is planning future career in order to start an independent life (Kanfer et al., 2001). A number of studies show that it poses number of signifi cant problems (Super, 1963; Super, Savickas, Super, 1996; Webber, 1990; Borgen, Amundson, 2010). The aim of the present study was to defi ne decision-making mechanisms that have an impact on career planning by adolescents and the infl uence of their personality traits upon it. The NEO-FFI Inventory and a self-constructed questionnaire were administered to 116 students of the last year of a secondary school. The data indicate correlations between the choices concerning further studies and personality traits measured with NEO-FFI Inventory. The following traits proved to be signifi cant: neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness

Opis:
The study concerns the connection between the feeling of autonomy implied as self-determination and family relationships among 17-to-19-year-old adolescents. The study was inspired by Bowlby’s theory of attachment and Ryan and Deci’s theory of self-determination. The subjects were 145 adolescent high-school students (82 female and 61 male). The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, Family of Origin Scale and Self-Determination Scale were used in this study. The results led to a conclusion that healthy family relationships and a secure pattern of attachment correspond to a higher autonomy seen as self-determination. The Self-Determination Scale that was used reached a high reliability index, which suggests that it might be a useful tool for future studies and that it might be worth conducting its cultural adaptation.

Opis:
The aim of the presented study was to explore the relationship between religiosity and moral development during adolescence. We were interested if the centrality of religiosity (that is, the position of an individual’s religious construct system in personality [Huber, 2003] is related to moral reasoning and decision making in moral dilemmas. It was assumed that the system of religious constructs can function in both heterogeneous or autonomous ways, and we asked if the type of religious motivation is associated with specific features of moral thinking, and thereby with moral development. 112 Polish students (aged 15–18) from Catholic and non-Catholic high schools completed two questionnaires: Polish versions of Huber’s Centrality of Religiosity Scale and the Rest’s Defining Issues Test. The results indicated that there is the relationship between (a) global centrality and second stage (pre-conventional level) and fourth stage (conventional level) of moral development; (b) five dimensions of religiosity and stages of moral development.

Opis:
Age differences in emotional intelligence – are we getting better? Processing of emotional information in adolescence and mature age This study examined relationships between age and the ability to process emotional information. Emotion processing is defined as the ability to organize and represent emotional experience and includes the ability to recognize and label facial expressions of basic emotions, the ability to express emotions, and the ability to regulate the intensity with which emotions are perceived and experienced (Bland, Williams, Scharer, Manning, 2004). The ability to process emotional information is a basic concept of emotional intelligence (Mayer, Caruso, Salovey, 1999). The participants were 77 (37 females and 40 males) in two groups: adolescents (N=38) and middle-aged (N=39). Processing emotional information was measured by Processing of Emotional Information Test (Szczygieł, 2002), based on the theory of cognitive representation of emotion (Maruszewski, Ścigała, 1995). Hypotheses related to age differences, implying that older people process emotional information more accurately than younger was supported in relation to processing of more complex and differentiated material (nonverbal feature). The interpretation of results was performed in reference to the theory of socioemotional selectivity and the concept of postformal thinking. Socioemotional selectivity theory (Carstensen, 1995; Carstensen,Isaacowitz, & Charles, 1999) asserts that changes in the life of older adults result from motivational changes. The concept of postformal thinking assumes a progression in thinking from dualistic or absolutist thought to more subjectively determined modes of thinking in which the relativistic and/or dialectical nature of knowledge is more thoroughly understood (Labouvie-Vief, Diehl, 2000; Kielar-Turska, 2000; Gurba, 2006).

The factor structure of Michael D. Berzonsky’s Identity Style Inventory. How many styles are measured by ISI3?The Identity Style Inventory ISI3 developed by Michael D. Berzonsky is currently one of the most widely used measurement instruments in personality research – both in English language and Polish literature. The following paper is the Polish publication presenting the results of the study on the factor structure of identity styles as conceptualized by Berzonsky and operationalized in the ISI3 questionnaire. The study involved a total of 1995 people belonging to three developmental stages: early adolescence, late adolescence, and early adulthood. By means of confi rmatory factor analysis with parcelling, which has been used in English-language literature, the 3-factor structure of the inventory was confi rmed (similarly as in other countries). However, this paper questions the above method of analysis and proposes that it is necessary to check if the studied constructs are one-dimensional. Verifi cation conducted with the help of exploratory factor analysis and the comparison of alternative models with confi rmatory factor analysis seem to contradict the 3-factor structure. The collected empirical material appears to indicate that the diffuse-avoidant style (measured with the Polish version of the ISI3) in fact consists of two independent dimensions: the avoidant style and the diffuse-careless style.

Adolescents’ action control level versus their self-esteem and locus of controlThe aim of this research was to analyse the relationship between adolescents’ self-knowledge (general self-esteem level, self-esteem coherence, self-esteem certainty) and locus of control, on the one hand, and action control level (decision-related action control level – AOD and action control level during performing an activity – AOP) on the other. 119 eighteen-year-old students of two Warsaw secondary schools participated in the study. The methods used to analyse the hypotheses were: 1) M. Tukałło and R. Wiechnik’s Self-Knowledge Inventory, 2) R. Drwal’s Locus of Control Questionnaire “Delta” and 3) J. Kuhl’s Action Control Scale. SPSS pack (Pearson’s ‘r’ correlation method, regression method, Pearson’s partial correlation method) was used for the purpose of statistical analysis. The results of the research point to a statistically signifi cant correlation between self-esteem and decision-related action control as well as between locus of control and decision-related action control. Moreover, the findings demonstrate that locus of control and general self-esteem are not correlated with action control during performing an activity. However, the study confirmed a significant, but not very strong, correlation between action control during performing an activity and global self-esteem, intellectual self-esteem and self-esteem certainty.

Types of internal boundaries within families and social competence of adolescentsThe objective of this study was to analyse family mechanisms of social competence of adolescent formation. According to Salvador Minuchin’s (1974) theory, it was assumed that inappropriate boundaries (rigid or diffuse) between parents and children make adolescents less competent in difficult social situations, while individuals from families with clear boundaries are more competent in social situations such as intimate contact, social exposition and assertiveness. The modified versions of Analysis of Family Environmental Scale by M. Ryś (2004) and Social Competence Questionnaire by A. Matczak (2001) were used in the study. 345 adolescents from different types of families were examined. The results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that there is a connection between family boundaries and interpersonal skills of adolescents.

The objective of this study was to analyze family mechanisms in the development of adolescents’ social functioning. It focused on the relation between father and mother. It was assumed that those subjects who assess their parents’ marital quality as low are more hostile in interpersonal situations, while individuals who perceive high marital satisfaction in their parents display a more pro-social behaviour. . The Marital Satisfaction Scale by M. Braun-Gałkowska (1985) with a modifi cation by A. Gałkowska (1999) and the Interpersonal Style Scale by J.M. Stanik (1994a; 1994b) were used in the study. 344 adolescents were examined. The results of the correlation indicated that there is a connection between the perceived parents’ marital quality and the social functioning of young people in the following styles: cooperative-overconventional, docile-dependent and selfeffacing– masochistic, as well as realism and pessimism in interactions (a weak correlation, but a signifi cant one). Moreover, the division into groups of respondents as regards their assessment of their parents’ marriage (as low, average and highly successful) and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) allowed to capture the specifi city of the interpersonal functioning of each. Those respondents who perceived their parents as the most satisfi ed with their relationship turned out to be the most prosocial and independent, while those who evaluated their parents’ relationship the lowest turned out to be the least friendly towards others, and the most pessimistic. These results support the hypothesis, but only in some styles the differences were statistically signifi cant (in cooperativeoverconventional and docile-dependent styles, and pessimism scale)

The aim of this study was to analyze the link between body image, self-regulation and stress in late adolescence and early adulthood on the basis of Personality Systems Interaction Theory by J. Kuhl. The subjects of the study were people attending fi tness clubs and gyms (N = 29) and those who did not pursue any physical activity (N = 29). Body image was assessed by means of the “body and self-esteem” scale from the Eating Disorder Cognition Questionnaire (FEDK, Legenbauer, Vocks, and Schütt-Strömel, 2007), self-regulation was assessed by means of the Action Control Scale (ASC 90, Kuhl, 1994a; 2001), and stress bymeans of the “demands” and “threats” scales from the Volitional Component Questionnaire (Kuhl, Furmann, 1998). Analyzes showed that there are no differences between adolescents and young adults in body image, self regulation, and stress level. It was found that the physically active group has a negative body image in comparison with the physically inactive group. However, there is a relationship between body dissatisfaction, state orientation subsequent to failure, and stress (demands). A mediation analysis additionally showed that stress was an important mediator between action control and body image.

Opis:
In the paper we present a draft of a model capturing the relationship between shame and the identity development process. We discuss two main concepts of shame: shame as an adaptive emotion, according to the evolutionary approach, and as a maladaptive emotion, according to the cognitive attribution theory. Our main thesis states that shame has an essential, both constructive and maladaptive importance for identity development, and this effect is indirect, through the mechanisms of regulating emotions. The destructive and disrupting value of shame is not an immanent feature of this emotion, but a consequence of malfunctioning mechanisms of shame regulation. The association of shame with identity formation relates to the dimensions of exploration: in breadth, in depth and ruminative, as well as to commitment making and identification with commitment. People with a high level of shame proneness are more sensitive to information and assessment coming from signifi cant others from their nearest social environment and more self-critical. This may contribute to the increasing discrepancy or dissonance between the possessed and the desired or socially expected identity. This may also activate mechanisms of identity change and affect its relative stability.
