Opis:
Gianni Vattimo, who is both a Catholic and a frequent critic of the Church, explores the surprising congruence between Christianity and hermeneutics in light of the dissolution of metaphysical truth. As in hermeneutics, Vatimo claims, interpretation is central to Christianity. Influenced by hermeneutics and borrowing largely from the Nietzschean and Heideggerian heritage, the Italian philosopher, who has been instrumental in promoting a nihilistic approach to Christianity, draws here on Nietzsche’s writings on nihilism, which is not to be understood in a purely negative sense. Vattimo suggests that nihilism not only expands the Christian message of charity, but also transforms it into its endless human potential. In “The Age of Interpretation,” the author shows that hermeneutical radicalism “reduces all reality to message,” so that the opposition between facts and norms turns out to be misguided, for both are governed by the interpretative paradigms through which someone (always a concrete, historically situated someone) makes sense of them. Vattimo rejects some of the deplorable political consequences of hermeneutics and claims that traditional hermeneutics is in collusion with various political-ideological neutralizations.

The discussion relates essentially to problems such as sign and interpretation. The author analyzes the selected threads of thought of Charles Sanders Peirce, showing their similarity to the hermeneutics of Heidegger and Gadamer.

Epistolary writing has been known for ages and has won a significant position in the history of literature. One of the most intriguing exchanges of letters known from the 20th century started nine days before the wedding of the renowned artist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz with an aristocrat Jadwiga von Urunh. The first letter is dated to the 21st of March 1923 and the last on the 24th of August 1939. The letters of Witkacy to his wife have been for many years surrounded by a veil of mystery. They can be read as a history of a certain relationship, a study of loneliness, a historical and social life chronicle or as a comment on artistic activity. The set comprises 1278 letters, postcards and wires. In this edition it is divided into two equal parts of which the first one includes the letters, while the second presents the commenting notes written by Professor Janusz Degler. The editors divided the whole set into four parts of which three volumes of Witkacy’s letters to his wife from the years 1923–1927, 1928–1931, 1932–1935 have already been published. Unfortunately, none of the letters written by Jadwiga to her husband has been found, so we know the correspondence exclusively from the side of a daily writer Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz.

The article presents an interpretation of Orwell video games in context of available analytical tropes in Orwellian research. The paper touches on various problems described by academic readers of Nineteen Eighty-Four and tries to answer the question whether games provide innovations in the way they problematize socio-political issues in comparison to Orwell’s classic novel. In the introductory part, the author discusses the possibility of utilizing the notion of critical dystopia in the analysis of Orwell video games. The following chapters touch on the subject of cultural references, realistic styles, biopolitics and class representations.

The paper deals with issues regarding the disenchantment of literature stemming from the instrumental approach in literary studies. It highlights cases of resistance to this disenchantment of literature both in academic and literary works. The instrumental lecture is contrasted with the creative one, which results from opening up to otherness contained within the text. The creation of unassimilated otherness is the drving force of the literary avant-garde, which uses it as a defence against scientific disenchantment. Possible reasons for the feeling of literary disenchantment are discussed in this paper and the validity of such fears is taken into consideration.

Opis:
The paper is an attempt to reflect on whether hermeneutics can still be a cognitively fruitful approach in literary studies, especially in respect of contemporary output. The authoress analyses two currents in the literature, which could be named integrating and eristic. They seem to correspond with two paradigms in hermeneutics: affirmative, concentrating on “brightening an existence”, and radical, emphasizing “weakness”, “flux”, “collapsing” etc. A key issue is the doubt whether applying the name “hermeneutics” is not in itself misleading, as it concerns diametrically opposed points of view. The authoress proposes her own understanding of hermeneutics as a perspective of reading literature, which “cling on” to the protagonists’, author’s and interpreter’s experience. She also invokes the metaphors of scaffolding and house building, where the home is marked with an unrelenting “uneasiness” and lacks strong foundations, but does convey the situation of incessant common constructing the accidental and demanding protection of meaning.

The analysis in this article focusses on two of Stanisław Barańczak’s poems in the context of the writer’s biography, i.e. the fact that he was an intellectual, poet, translator and essayist, as well as an opposition activist and one of the co-founders of the Workers’ Defence Committee (Komitet Obrony Robotników). The starting point is a reference to Czesław Miłosz's essays entitled Life on the isles and Immorality of art, in which the Nobel prizewinner ponders the role of the poet in the contemporary world. The poems discussed in this article are presented as one of the possible forms through which the 20th-century ethos of the intellectual is realised.

The main aim of the article is an interpretation of Stanisław Barańczak’s poem Przywracanie porządku (Restoration of order), written in Cambridge, USA, between December 1981 and July 1982. This composition may be analysed as a specific closure of one stage of his literary output and the starting point of new forms of his creative work. Contemporary affect theory (as a multiplicity of forms and types) proves to be a useful methodology, which affords possibilities for new interpretations of Barańczak’s poetry.

Opis:
The article titled “Personal literary interpretation” deals with problems which have usually been marginalized in literary studies, but which seem to be very important in the context of the humanities, as broadly defined. The author of this article intends to rethink the problem of literary studies not in objective, but in personal terms. This is why the author wants to talk about what he calls personal literary interpretation, which has nothing to do with subjective or irrational thinking, but which is rather grounded in the hermeneutical rule that says that one must believe in order to understand a text or the other (where ‘believe’ also means: ‘to love’, ‘engage’, and ‘be open’). The article presents different determinants of this attitude, ranging from Dilthey to Heidegger and Gadamer. Finally, the author subscribes to the theory of personal interpretation, which is always dialogical.

Video games are often analysed as textual objects. This default literary point of view, while providing valuable conclusions, fails to observe some essential points that are realised in different modes of narration. Here I will analyse the Cyberpunk 2077 video game from a musical perspective. I will be “listening to” the game rather than “reading” it. This kind of hermeneutical approach will highlight certain ideas of CP2077. I will focus on the issue of dehumanisation, and show that musically the game places special emphasis on this. I will point out the musical characteristics that can affect players and interpret the rationale behind it.

Secondly, the article weighs up the pros and cons of Fish’s anti-essentialist arguments for professional literary studies. Opis:
The paper offers a philosophical commentary on the widely discussed 1981 meeting of Derrida and Gadamer at Paris’ Goethe Institute. These two figures “virtually personify, in hermeneutics and deconstruction, the two major and rival ‘schools’ of contemporary continental philosophy associated with the primacy of interpretation.” Adopting a pragmatist perspective, the author discusses their approaches to the issue of interpretation – different and often seen as mutually exclusive. He claims that Derrida and Gadamer in fact have a great deal in common and tries to show that American pragmatism offers a mode of mediation, which allows us to grasp their mutual relations. The author concentrates on the three central issues that emerge from Derrida’s Three Questions to Hans-Georg Gadamer, namely the context of interpretation, consensual continuity versus rupture as the basis or precondition of interpretation, and the nature or possibility of perfect dialogical understanding.
