Opis:
The article addresses the problem of absence of women’s poetry in the linguistic current of 20th-century Polish poetry. It analyses its causes, amongst which the pivotal role is played by the stereotypical vision of women’s poetry, deeply ingrained in general awareness. The vision in question does not admit “difficult” forms and thus places women’s poetic work outside the avant-garde tendencies, linguistic experiment and metareflection. The authoress calls for inclusion of the omitted or forgotten poetesses who play with language in their poems and she articulates the need to redefine our understanding of linguistic poetry.

The article presents the category of colour in modern Polish poetry, and based on an interpretation of Ewa Górecka’s book, Konstatnego Ildefonsa Gałczyńskiego gry barwą z wyobraźnią i kulturą [Colours as Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński’s Play with Imagination and Culture]. The colour palette in Gałczyński’s poetry includes golden, silver, green, blue, red and black. Culture was an inspiration for the poet, but he didn’t avoid entering into dialogue with it, establishing the meanings of colours in his writing. The colours present in Gałczyński’s lyric poetry also indicate the changes in his poetic language. The way in which the poet uses them in his early works differs from their use in those created after 1945.

Opis:
In the Poetry of Philosophers anthology (Kraków–Wrocław 1984) Wit Jaworski published 221 works by 114 authors, starting with Tales from Milet to John Paul II. Almost all known philosophers composed poetry, which often complemented their philosophical reflections or concepts. The list of names also includes Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, who wrote poems from his youth until his death, although at the same time regretting that he had no poetic talent and used some of his works in his dramas as examples of a graphomaniac’s work. Many poems have a humorous and parodical, which brings them closer to his numerous grotesque drawings. They were collected and published by Anna Micińska in an album entitled Wistość tych rzeczy jest nie z świata tego (Kraków 1977), illustrated by Urszula Kenar. In the anthology, under the name of Witkiewicz, there is a poem which begins with words: “Otom jest zwyciężony/ Ginę zgubą wszelkiego żywego stworzenia”. There is no doubt that this is the beginning of the third stanza of the well-known poem by Czesław Miłosz entitled St. Ign. Witkiewicz, published in the volume Ocalenie (Warsaw 1945). Is it an unfortunate mistake on the part of the author of the anthology, a seasoned critic and experienced editor, or is it his fortune to confuse the censor, who did not allow Miłosz’s texts to be published and thus to “smuggle” his poem in under the guise of Witkiewicz? The puzzle remains unresolved. The mistake is inscribed in the history of Witkacy’s so-called “dodges”, which he did to his friends and acquaintances, and then to those who dealt with his life and work. To attribute to him the authorship of Miłosz’s excellent work would certainly make him happy.

Poznań 2019, Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 285–300. ISSN 1644-6763. DOI 10.14746/pt.2019.32.15. The film chronicles the last days in the life of Rafał Wojaczek, who committed suicide at the age of 26. This is the director’s vision that reflects the spirit and character of an artistic genius and his poetic work. Wojaczek is presented against the background of the grey, dirty and bleak communist reality of the late 1960s and early 1970s and therefore becomes a symbol of a rebellious artist, not reconciled with the world and with himself. His colourful character and no less impressive worksshown in the film create the image of an artist whose life led in a straight line and with absolute consistency towards self-destruction. By showing the poet’s rebellion against reality, the director describes the artist’s self-destruction that headed for a tragic end. The is a black and white film with many experimental form treatments.

The article shows how the visual-painting category of afterimage, which derives from Władysław Strzemiński’s concept, functions at the level of literature (in the poetry of Bolesław Leśmian) and literary studies, as an attempt to apply art concepts to the interpretation of verse. The text is experimental in that it suggests using afterimage as a tool of cognitive philosophy that enables the new meanings to be highlighted in reading the poetic works of Leśmian and in establishing the relations between the visual and the word.

The paper compares Franz Mon’s pieces to earlier works, especially A throw of the dice will never abolish chance by Stephane Mallarme. This research is conducted in the context of Mon’s and Mallarme’s metapoetic commentary, who both show interest in the categories of playing and musical scores. The article attempts to transfer this perspective into an interpretation of four texts by Mon.

Ry Nikonova is a Russian poet, belonging to the so-called “Second culture” of the 20th century, creating in the spirit of neo-avant-garde. Together with her husband, she published in the samizdat magazine “Transponans”, which was formed in the 1970–80s. Her poetic works, stylized as theatrical plays, present the idea of syncretism of art, which according to the artist is theatre. The short, economical poems evoke monumental visions of theatre, where gestures are important – less words, the conflict between actors and spectators, and all the seemingly non-scenic spaces associated with theatre in the reader’s consciousness.

Polish poetry of the 1990s was shaped primarily by the works of Andrzej Sosnowski, an author who introduced the New York tradition into our language. The poet Adam Zdrodowski, who debuted in 2005, is often referred to as Sosnowski’s most capable student and it is for this reason that literary criticism fails to accord Sosnowski’s poetry the attention it deserves. In this paper I strive to demonstrate that Zdrodowski is first and foremost a student of John Ashbery; it should be noted that the author of Przygody, etc. reads the New York poetry in a very different way to Sosnowski.

Opis:
This article covers a particular form of Wisława Szymborska conceptism, her Thought fugues, which turns the world’s elements upside down and deconstructs them, uncovering their antinomies. The described reality takes the form of a concatenation, it is elliptic, based on seemingly symmetric tessellations, but in essence triggers some logic turns. It is possible to discern a similarity with advertising rhetoric and its constant variations of sense based on oppositions, such as double meaning, antiphrasis, paradox, or tautology. In all of which Szymborska is able to notice the condensing of meaning, or even some oxymoronic properties. It is perhaps this reason why her poetry is accessible to such a wide audience across the world. Though frequently condemned by 20th-century thinkers as a mere pleonasm, tautology becomes for the poetess a fluid material useful for her dialectics of imagination. Szymborska does not see language as a mirror of the world, but rather as an act of creating new worlds and new forms of life, like Wittgenstein did in his theory of language games. This is why she prefers such word games more than other poets. Due to their dual nature, tautologies constitute a potential and permanent element of Szymborska’s conceptual games.

Opis:
The article develops the analysis of recurrent kitschy motifs in poetry and prose by Justyna Bargielska. This authoress consciously and intensively takes advantage of pop-cultural kitsch, kitsch connected to maternity and femininity, sacrokitsch and consolatory kitsch used in mourning practices. She derives many fetishized objects from these areas and transforms them into private talismans; she also borrows many established pop-cultural visions that serve her heroines to create their identity, but sometimes these patterns become a costume for individual fears and phantasies. The term ‘kitschism’ was invented by Bargielska herself and it suggests intellectual distance towards the figures and requisites used. The writer’s attitude towards kitschy cliches is developed as a dialectical movement of attraction and repulsion, and is not meant to overthrow dominant stereotypes; this approach is often similar to camp strategies, yet it extends beyond ludic or ironic games. Bargielska is interested mainly in the anthropological aspect of kitsch, which is situated between the individual and the community. The writer tests the usefulness of cliches while confronting her heroines with the most serious subjects, like death, love or loss.

This article is of a comparative nature and attempts to contrast the poetic output of two Nobel prize-winners, i.e. Eugenio Montale and Wisława Szymborska. The author uncovers numerous similarities especially between Montale’s late works and Szymborska’s poetry. This is particularly visible on two planes, i.e. existential reflection and language, as well as poetic means. The Italian poet and Polish poetess focus on the individual presented as being under pressure from the modern world’s vast, impersonal forces, e.g. history, progress etc. They treat the traditional poetic means of expression with mistrust and instead favour the kind of language that is as clear as possible, subject to philosophical reflection, and infused with irony, allegory and paradox.

This paper analyzes different paths of the development of both the movement and the notion of concrete poetry in three linguistic regions. The German-language konkrete Dichtung turns out to usually denote the original, historical shape of the movement, which was partly created in German- speaking countries and which has been treated as a literary phenomenon. The Englishlanguage term concrete poetry is a much broader category which also encompasses visual poetry and avant-garde texts that are distant from the sources of concretism in its early form. The Polish understanding of ‘poezja konkretna’ [concrete poetry] was influenced by both German- and English- language books and by the movement’s regional version, which appeared in Poland as late as in the 1970s. The selected linguistic areas allowed the author to show three basic ways of thinking about concretism, i.e. about its initial, international, and regional versions.

The article presents and interpretation of a Stanisław Barańczak’s poem Łono przyrody [The Bosom of Nature], seldom discussed by specialists. This seemingly simple poem from the volume Ja wiem, że to niesłuszne [I Know It’s Not Right] (1977) elaborates on the common idiomatic phrase ‘the bosom of nature’ and proves to be a masterful and intricate artistic declaration of existential and political disobedience. The “I” of Barańczak’s poem is something of a lapsus of Nature and History, standing in opposition to the mindless existence and enslavement of the communist state. In this sense he is very similar to the subject of Wisława Szymborska’s verse. Her poetic oeuvre, translated and discussed on numerous occasions by Barańczak himself, is indeed an important interpretive context here. The article points to the relationships between specific texts by both poets and depicts similarities and differences between their poetic outlooks.

The analysis of her poem Reprymenda [Reprimand] gives rise to a proposal of authotematism specific to Hartwig’s poetry, here called ‘out of the blue’ autothematism and contrasted with the concept of avant-garde poetry. This metapoetic formula is then extended to other texts in the volume Jasne niejasne [Bright Unclear], in which the mimetic aspect of literature in particular is problematised and the ethical dimension of Hartwig’s oeuvre is highlighted.
