Opis:
The subject of this article is the social teaching of Pope Francis, devoted to the dreams of the development of a world community that supports peoples and nations in an international, state, regional and local context. A community in which all help each other, in particular based on universal fraternity and social friendship, presented in the encyclical Fratelli tutti of 2020. In his view, devoid of both good and critical assessment and limited only to a general description. Moreover, the article presents elements concerning the teaching of Catholic social teaching towards a human community united in building peace, solidarity, justice and common good, in the sense of community of people and nations, as well as in the face of the values and duties of citizens, rulers and state authorities. It aims to show the attitude of the Catholic Church to the development of communities and the changes taking place in them, related, inter alia, to the challenges and problems for the integral development of these communities, in various periods of history, as well as in today’s globalizing world, in order to present them against the background of the reflections of Pope Francis relating to this issue, and thus answering the question – what to develop in an international community based on the above values?

Opis:
The article On peace and brotherhood. Selected aspects of the philosophy and social thought of Pope Francis is a rational and critical reconstruction and analysis of the doctrine of peace and the ideal of brotherhood in Francis’ social teaching. In the proclaimed doctrine of peace, the Pope refers to the essential contents formulated in the constitutions of the Second Vatican Council and in the social teaching, philosophy and theology of his predecessors: Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Francis accurately diagnoses contemporary difficulties and obstacles on the way to a peaceful and fraternal coexistence of people. At the same time, the pontificate of Francis gives dynamism to the doctrine of peace, characteristic of the person and intellectual formation of Jorge Mario Bergoglio. At the same time, Francis points out the path of renewal and “rebirth” of the doctrine of peace, the teleological nature of which determines the content of the duty necessary to implement the indicated ideals of social life.

Opis:
Traditionally Catholicism has been perceived as unfriendly to the capitalist economy. Protestantism’s image is different: it has been regarded as a religious movement which boosted the so-called spirit of capitalism. The aim of this article is to raise a question whether today’s Catholicism still deserves that characterization as a denomination biased against capitalism. This issue is of considerable importance for business ethicists who are interested in the moral condition of market economy and, quite often, in the impact of religion on economic culture. Many of them are Catholics themselves and their religion seems to be a real source of inspiration for the ethical analyses of economic life they present. This article offers a number of arguments to the effect that although Catholic social teaching originated in the pre-modern, medieval period, it has changed to a large degree due to several papal encyclicals in the 20th century. Centesimus annus by John Paul II should be mentioned here as an epochal message expressing approval of human creativity and entrepreneurship. This new perspective was also due to Catholic philosophers and theologians such as Michael Novak and other members of the neoconservative movement in the United States.

Opis:
The principle of independence of the state and religious associations is one of the main normative directives of religious relations in contemporary Poland. It has ideological roots not only in Catholic social teaching, but also in the liberal doctrine. The juridization of this principle is especially a reaction to the reality of absolutist, authoritarian or totalitarian regimes that essentially limit the freedom of religious communities. Since the end of the 20th century, the principle of independence of the state and the church has found a permanent place in the constitutionalism of a number of European secular (non-religious) states and some Latin American states. It is often accompanied by the principle of the autonomy of the state and / or religious associations and their cooperation. The principle of independence of the state and religious associations has a rich content and produces concrete political consequences. In a narrow sense, it means the internal self-government of the above-mentioned entities. In broad terms, the following aspects can be distinguished: organizational, normative, functional and ideological-symbolic. The principle in question means, in particular, that the state does not interfere in religious matters. It is incompetent in this respect. On the other hand, religious associations do not institutionally enter the sphere of public rule. The principle of independence is a guarantee of the freedom of conscience and of conscience and religion. It serves to shape a democratic socio-political system. It does not exclude the cooperation of the state and religious associations.

Opis:
Local self-government constitutes the common good of the state and all its citizens. His appointment is justified by the implementation of various goods, delivery of public services, undertaking activities and cooperation aimed at satisfying the collective needs of civic communities - the state community and self-government communities. Recognition of local government as a special good can be found in many approaches, among which a special place is occupied by the constitutional principle of the common good and social doctrine of the Catholic Church. Both meanings correspond with each other, and their interpretations recognize local government as the common good of the state and all citizens, at the same time citizens who are residents of individual self-government communities. What is the common good of local government? What is the understanding of the common good of local government in terms of the constitutional principle of the common good and social doctrine of the Catholic Church? What is the understanding of the common good within the framework of cooperation between local government and the Territorial Defence Forces? This study is an attempt to answer these questions, as well as to indicate selected examples of the title relationship for the common good.

In the modern world there is a growing reflection on the essence of the relationship between the state and society, which is regulated in according to the principle of subsidiarity. This principle is based on the positive assumption that society – its citizens and social communities – should develop their activities and that the state should help them and intervene when necessary. In this way, the principle of subsidiarity is formulated both in secular law and in the social doctrine of the Catholic Church. In the latter case, this is one of the key issues presented in the papal encyclicals.

Opis:
Local self-government is considered a manifestation of civil society. This view is justified, among others, by the practice of social life and social teaching of the Catholic Church. This article includes reflections on Catholic social teaching in recognizing local self-government as an important element in building a civil society and promoting civic attitudes. Its authors attempt to indicate the position of Catholic social science regarding this issue, with particu-lar emphasis on the interpretation and contribution of Pope Benedict XVI. The main aim of the article is to reconstruct the teaching of Pope Benedict XVI on local self-government as a manifestation of civil society and to answer the question: “How did Pope Benedict XVI understand the idea of local self-government as a civil society in relation to Catholic social science”. The authors seek answers to this question based on the method of analyzing the sources, which are the encyclicals of Pope Benedict XVI: Deus caritas est (2006) and Caritas in veritate (2009). In addition, the teaching of Pope Benedict XVI in the context of the analyzed issue is completed with the fragment concerning its interpretation in the practice of social life, presented in the first part of the article. It is to show the understanding of this phenomenon in the public sphere and combine it with the understanding functioning in the religious sphere, in order to show that both approaches significantly correspond with each other. The authors argue that Pope Benedict XVI treated local government as an element of disseminating civic attitudes, and thus a factor strengthening civil society.

Referring to this year’s local government elections in Poland traditionally on the occasion of this type of events which concern the manifestation of local democracy in the public debate, there are many questions about the essence and role of local self-government in a modern democratic state. Therefore it is necessary to consider what is the essence and role of local self-government in a democratic state in which Catholicism dominates, a state based on the principles of a democratic state of law and the doctrine of the Catholic Church which seems to be Poland at the time. Bearing these matters in mind, in this article the subject of my considerations in the first part is to present the essence and role of local self-government in a democratic state, while in the second part to present the essence and role of local self-Government in the social teaching of the Catholic Church, whose teaching is related to the development of modern societies

This article is for reference purposes. Its aim is to reconstruct the social doctrine of the Catholic Church regarding the usage of nuclear weapons. Te article consists of three basic parts. Te frst one is connected with the history of the Church’s approach to war, with special emphasis being placed on the theory of the just war; the second one is focused on the stance on war and nuclear weapons of the Popes whose pontifcates came afer the weapon was invented; the third part refers to changes and new doctrinal interpretations of the problem of war and nuclear weapons, which appeared during pope Francis’ pontifcate. In the article the authors endeavor to answer the following questions: (1) can the position of the Catholic Church on nuclear weapons be considered in isolation from the Church’s stance on war?; (2) has the Church’s position on war and nuclear weapons been the same from the beginning or has it changed? (3) what elements did individual Popes bring to the Church’s doctrine regarding the use of nuclear weapons? (4) has Pope Francis changed the social doctrine of the Catholic Church in the face of war and nuclear weapons?; (5) How will the Church’s position on war and nuclear weapons evolve in the future?
