    In these remarks I make the attempt to present the issue of the relation between the scientific knowledge and religious faith. It is being discussed since many centuries. In the Middle Ages it was also called the “two truths”. Nowadays it is called however as the two magisteria. The name had been proposed by the American evultionary biologist Stephen J. Gould. In his proposition it is linked to the NOMA (Non-Overlapping Magisteria) principle. It met with critique from the side of those scholars who, just as Richard Dawkins, share the view that there’s only one magisteria and it is made by science with no space for religious faith. Reservations had also been made by those scholars who, just as Andrew Newberg, do agree on the existence of two magisteria, but they should  complete each other and they are convinced that with the passing of time they will do so. I have critical remarks on both of those two views. I see however the positive side of the intentions of Gould and Newberg.

    In these considerations he recalls the statements of those who reveal the occurrence of such embarrassing phenomena as pedophilia or sexual harassment in the Catholic Church. The problem, however, is not only about their occurrence in it, but also about their concealment by those who recognize that making them public can harm more than help this Church. Just like the authors of publications on these negative phenomena, which I cite, I do not share this position.
    Niestety, dopóki co, nie wygląda na to, aby hierarchom Kościoła katolickiego w Polsce bardzo zależało na ujawnianiu występujących w nim takich wstydliwych zjawisk jak pedofilia. Jeśli dzisiaj decydują się oni o nich mówić publicznie, to stało się tak m.in. za sprawą głośnych procesów wytoczonych w kilku krajach zachodnich księżom pedofilom oraz pewnych zachęt idących z Rzymu. W tej glosie do tego problemu przywołam przykłady takich osób, którym zależy na ujawnianiu tych wstydliwych zjawisk, a nawet traktują to jako swój moralny obowiązek. Nie są oni wprawdzie liczni, niemniej są dosyć mocno zróżnicowani zawodowo. W tym gronie bowiem znajdują się zarówno naukowcy i dziennikarze, jak i czynni księża katoliccy. Na przeciwnym biegunie znajdują się oczywiście ci, którzy mają swój udział w próbie ich ukrycia.

    In these remarks I make the attempt to highlight a much pointed out in the media problem of the controversial behavior of Christian clergy, including the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, as well the popes themselves. I call these sins. It is not – in my opinion – an abuse of the term, because the are a breach of norms and moral rules of that religion (and not only that). Those who commit them know about it and still they do not stop their practices – even despite the fact that one of them belongs to the sins “crying for hevean’s revenge.” Mostly those practices are being hidden before the eyes of others, and if that doesn’t succeed, they are being justified with circumstances they cannot control. It is however discussable how much these justifications are plausible.

    In these remarks I put a question mark by the term conscience recalled by Catholics. Their aim isn’t however an attempt to undermine their faith in the causative force of conscience, but to show that it’s theological interpretation is one thing, but it’s practical application is another. It is worth noting that both in the past and in the present they not just function simultaneously, but also in some cases being in conflict. They were and still are undertaken attempts of erasing this conflict or at least to weaken its significance. In my view, it does not serve well the Roman Catholic Church, and also those who seek other guides for their lives and existence with other people. They weaken the trust towards the Church and the conscience in which existence we believe, or at least want to (no matter the religious affiliation).

    In these considerations, I refer to examples of such a statement about the Catholic Church without anointing, which is not only a testimony of a lack of faith in his help in achieving salvation, but also a deep conviction that he is affected by serious illnesses. This expression was differently motivated, and it had and has very diverse consequences – both for those expressing their words and for the addressees. In each case, however, it meant and signifes the specifc votum of the former separatum towards the Catholic Church, and put in the role of complicit all those who, despite revealing serious ills, agree to remain in this community, and even express their tacit acceptance of the irregularities occurring in it.
    Kościół katolicki nie jest jedyną instytucją wrażliwą na to, co się o nim mówi oraz jak się o nim mówi. W tym jednak przypadku ma to szczególnie duże znaczenie, bowiem wiąże się nie tylko z budowaniem lub rujnowaniem jego pozycji społecznej, ale także z wiązaniem przez członków tej wspólnoty nadziei na takie życie, które będzie pozbawione nieszczęść i niedogodności tego świata, a mówiąc językiem wierzących – na zbawienie duszy. Stąd formułowana przez Ojców Kościoła (takich jak św. Augustyn czy św. Cyprian) i powtarzana później przez wieki z namaszczeniem zasada: „poza Kościołem nie ma zbawienia”.

    Neopaganism in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe is practically since its emergence in the first half of the 20th century the object of interest of scholars from diverse academic centres. The problems these scholars are experiencing are under some circumstances similar to those which occur in the research on Western neopaganism, and under other they are specific. In these remarks I make the attempt to present the selected examples of the research on neopaganism in the Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland and how particular scholars had dealt with it. I do not claim however, that one of them wasn’t able to deal with it in such an extent that his research was nonscientific. It seems that some of them in a greater and some in a lesser extent meet the scientific criteria and requirements.

    In these remarks I make the attempt to show the question of research issues related to the research on selected forms of neopaganism occurring in the West. I recall here the research conducted on such forms of the phenomenon as wicca, the druids and the asutran. However, at least some of them are visible during the research on many other forms of the contemporary neopaganism. They are related to both – the estimation of the number of members of such communities, their real beliefs and practices as well their relation to the closest and further social environment. In the remarks formulated at the end of this paper I tend to defend a general thesis that the modern reneisance of the paganism makes an important cultural phenomena and the research conducted on it makes an significant challange and task to do by the scholars representing the cultural sciences and the study of religions

    In these remarks once again (this problem had occurred already in ancient times) I take on the issue of atheism of philosophers. In this case I’m interested in those modern philosophers who combined their own philosophical thought with doing one of particular scientific disciplines. Some of them (like Victor J. Stenger for example) are more recognized as distinguished scholars, however some (like Daniel Dennett for example) as scholars and atheists, and others as atheists (like Michel Onfray and Michael Ruse). From the point of view of contemporary debates on atheism it is important to show how they joined their own atheism with the theses of the sciences they recall in their works.

    In these remarks I recall such stands of modern scholars which mean either an attempt to mild a centuries old conflict between the natural sciences and theology, or even to find such a dimension of understanding which would make it possible a mutual following such a goal that is to find the truth. This problem is being known however for a long time and was many times analyzed and presented, but nevertheless each generation of scholars and theologians writes a new chapters and implicating a further serious debate. I do find as such those which were written by Stephen Jay Gould, John Polkinghorne and Michał Heller.

    This article as a voice in the discussion on this crisis in the Catholic Church, which is discussed not only by its critics, but also by its defenders. A visible expression of this crisis is the decreasing number of people who identify with the Church not only their conscience, but also their thinking about themselves and the world around them. They manifest their votum separatum towards the Church in various ways, including by not taking part in its rituals. There are also those who provide thorough justification to their criticism. These include, among others: those who received theological education and even achieved significant positions in the Catholic Church, but later came to the conclusion that they were not comfortable with the functioning and teachings of the Church and either left it themselves or were excluded from it. I mention here only three examples of such theologians, i.e. Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, Hans Küng, and Tomasz Polak (Węcławski). There are many more. The ones I mentioned represent not only significant intellectual figures, but also show various circumstances and reasons for leaving the Church.

    In common views scholars belong to a group of people either non-believing in the existence of God and his creational powers, or at least distancing themselves from several of such beliefs which is shared by the majority of the society. The research in this matter shows that this issue is quite diverse when put into practice, also in such a leading in scientific achievements country like the United States. Although this research confirms that the major part of American scholars is either people declaring their non-faith in God, or at least distancing themselves in a significant way from it, there are many (both in social and natural sciences) of them who accept beliefs which seem to be in a striking contradiction with the knowledge on man and the natural world. One of such people recalled in these remarks is Alvin C. Planting. His argument with Daniel Dennett shows how far the standards of scientific correctness of thought accepted by American scholars might differ.

    The pointing out of two types of magistery, ie. that of science and faith, has its traditions reaching back to medieval times. It has been brought back to our attention by the American evolutionary biologist Jay S. Gould. However his view that those are not just „non-overlapping magisteria” but are under certain circumstances complementary met with criticism from the side of those who think science needs no such completion. In my remarks I do not follow neither Gould’s path, nor that of his critics. I recall nevertheless those solutions of the two magisteria issue which had been proposed by the Port Royal logicians – A. Arnould and P. Nicola, as well that of Blaise Pascal. They generally fit into the theological and philosophical current called jansenism. Between their standpoints occur  however important differences. They present the fact that the stressing out one of those magisteria depends on not just the understanding science and religious faith but also on perception and judgement of the existential situation of man in the earthly life.
