Opis:
Groundwater research monitoring, organized and carried out by the Polish Hydrogeological Survey since 2009, has been aimed at providing details on the quantitative and chemical conditions of groundwater bodies (GB) in areas of large-scale impact of mining activities and urban-industrial agglomerations. It is intended to provide information on the analysis of pressions and actual impacts on groundwater to assess the condition of groundwater bodies and to develop action programmes to achieve environmental objectives. Currently, it already operates in eight areas of mining impact, and, in the nearest future, it will cover the Basznia sulphur mining area as well as seven urban-industrial agglomerations.

Opis:
The Karkonosze granite massif contains groundwater with various depths of flow systems. In the mountainous part, fresh water predominates, mainly of local flow, where as in the Jelenia Góra Basin thermal waters have been found, reaching the temperature of 97°C. In nine samples of groundwater representing different flow depths, we have described a variation in the parameters of the structure and biodiversity of prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea). The variability of prokaryotes is determined by pH, Eh, electrolytic conductivity and temperature of water.

Field research on effective infiltration has been carried out in the Sowie Mountains area in the Sudetes Mountains (SW Poland) in a lysimeter installed 0.9 m below the surface of the ground in a forest. The annual rainfall in 2011 has been measured in the range 520.9–644.8 mm for the three station, while the average precipitation of the long term observation indicate 880 mm. Air temperature was 2°C higher during experiment period from the typical to the region. During annual study (from April 2011 to May 2012) it has been measured effective infiltration volume as 78.1 mm of water in comparison total precipitation of 596.7 mm in nearest station. Groundwater recharge by infiltration is changing during the year as well as in longer period, occurs mainly in cool season (spring, autumn) and indicate impulsive nature. The highest rate was reported in the October-November period, infiltration has exceeded the 30% of the precipitation, what could be explained by the high degree of saturation of the aeration zone. The departure value recorded in the summer relates to the degree of saturation of the aeration zone and there is high rainfall of the order of 200 mm. Then at the turn of July and August there has been measured a 54 mm percolating water. However, in August and September when rainfall over 107 mm water percolation was only 0.5 mm. Recharge and water supply in summer precipitation requires an initialization precipitation value order of 30–50 mm to supplement the state of moisture contains and high transpiration of plants. Infiltrating water showed of nitrate-sulphate-bicarbonate-calcium-sodium chemical type. In the process of infiltration increase of total dissolved solids almost twice has been measured.Water are enriched in the ions+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, Cl–, NO3–, SO42– is observed while the reduction of the concentration of HCO3–and NH4+. Chemical water composition is quite similar to the water in the stream located close to the lisymeter point.

Opis:
In Poland, hydrogeology as a separate scientific discipline came into being at the end of the 19th century. The first geologists were interested in springs, saline, mineralised waters of therapeutic use and dewatering of mines. Until World War I, in the early stages of hydrogeological developments, a different attitude towards groundwater problems was clearly notable in all three annexed Polish territories. The next stage of the development of Polish hydrogeology is dated to the years 1918-1939. In those times, the major focus of hydrogeological investigations was on building structures to extract artesian groundwater; mineral groundwater in the Polish spas; building municipal water intakes; and on Quaternary aquifers, widespread in Poland. Early hydrogeological handbooks were published at those times. The contemporary stage of Polish hydrogeology started in 1945, after World War II. In the early 1950s, the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology was established at the Central Board of Geology (CUG in Polish), which belonged to the Polish government as a separate ministry up to 1970. Hydrogeological companies with technology and development sections were founded in big cities. Nowadays, academic centres exist in Warsaw, Cracow, Wrocław, Gdańsk, Sosnowiec, Poznań, Kielce and Toruń. About 1400 persons with academic diplomas, 160 doctors and 22 professors of hydrogeology are active at present in the field of hydrogeology. The principal fields of Polish hydrogeology comprise the following: mine dewatering, recognition of groundwater resources and their protection, construction and exploitation of water intakes, hydrogeological cartography, mineral and thermal water resources, regional hydrogeology for physical planning, groundwater modelling and groundwater pollution, migration of pollutants and forecasting of groundwater changes. Up to the late eighties, political censorship was the main difficulty for the development of Polish hydrogeology, especially in publications related to sensitive information of groundwater occurrence and resources.

The authors have conducted research on radon occurrence in the groundwater system of Ślęża Massif in the Fore-Sudetic block. The research included documenting occurrence of radon waters in the granitoids of Strzegom-Sobótka Massif, buildingNWandWslopes of Ślęża. Among several springs flowing out from the granitoids and their waste, the Klasztorne Spring is characterized by constant radon (222Rn) concentration (306 ±39 Bq/dm3), but also constant though small discharge during the year, which enables estimating the admissible volume of this spring at 0.3 m3/h. The results obtained during the research show that this water can be treated as potentially medicinal. It generates the opportunity for the nearby town of Sobótka to develop as a health resort. Confirming the presence of radon groundwater in the granitoid part of Ślęża Massif implies a great probability that such w occur in the whole area of the Strzegom-Sobótka intrusion. It opens possibilities of recognizing new resources of potential therapeutic water and entails the necessity to take suitable actions for radiological protection of people living in this area.

Factors controlling concentration and activity ratios of radium isotopes in groundwaters are presented. The influence of lithology, hydrological conditions and chemical composition of groundwaters on radium content is discussed. Based on simple model of adsorption/desorption processes in the rock-water system, the numerical model of evolution of radium isotopes content was developed using Monte-Carlo (MC) method. Assuming that the waters are of similar age and occur under similar conditions, one can state that concentrations of radium isotopes are the highest in Na-Cl type waters, intermediate in waters with predominant carbonate mineralization, and the lowest in sulfate-type waters. In water with predominant Na-Cl mineralization the 226Ra concentration should be higher than that of 228Ra, whereas in sulfate waters this relation is inverse.

Opis:
The main aim of the work was to evaluate intrinsic and specific vulnerability of groundwater. An assessment of intrinsic vulnerability to groundwater pollution was elaborated on the basis of the original DRASTIC method. An assessment of specific vulnerability to groundwater pollution by nitrate was elaborated by two independent methods. First method – Nitrate Vulnerability Index (NV) was an adaptation of DRASTIC method, second was based on the quotient of nitrate loads (LN) and recharge rate (R), and expected nitrate concentration (NO3exp) were computed in this method. The results were presented in the relation to four homogenous regions called hydrozones: upland, top of the upland, plain and valley. The results of the DRASTIC method indicated on higher vulnerability of the aquifer in the plain (average IPZ = 155) and lower in the upland (IPZ = 125). The results of both specific vulnerability methods confirmed high vulnerability of the aquifer in the upland unit (the nitrate concentration in the range of 10–25 mg/dm3 in 25% of the unit area; average NV = 94) and lower in the plain area (the range of 0–5 mg/dm3 in the 47% /of unit area; average NV = 81). The results present a high difference between intrinsic and specific vulnerability mainly caused by agricultural activity in the upland.

Interactions between the groundwater and surface water affect the qualitative and quantitative status of water resources. Estimation of the fluxes and the associated loadings of contaminants exchanged between the aquifers and river reaches is an important but still not well recognized component of water resources management. Such estimates are available from the numerical models of flow and transport, however, coupling of the groundwater and surface water model domains is difficult. Calibration of the coupled models relies on the knowledge of the exchanged water fluxes, hydraulic conductivities of riverbed sediments and of other parameters. Preliminary application methods allowing for identification and quantification of the groundwater – surface water exchange is presented for the Kocinka catchment in Southern Poland.

The present study has shown that in small, mountainous Kamieńczyk catchment (Sudety Mts.) is possible to identify hydrodynamical conditions and chemical parameters typical for different zones of local groundwater flow systems: spring discharge, discharge variability, relationships between bicarbonate and sulphate ions, pH and silica contents. Furthermore regional flow zone was clearly chemically identified through high groundwater mineralization and strongly metamorphosed hydrogeochemical facies. This proves that studies of groundwater flow zones in mountain catchments can be effectively supported by chemical analysis of groundwater.
