Opis:
The Polish Geological Institute (PIG),established in 1919 as the geological survey, during the last 100 years carried out geological prospection of Poland, worked out the actual knowledge of geology and hydrogeology of the country, as well as discovered most of mineral deposits, essential to the national economy. This synthetic review presents the PIG achievements in prospecting and documenting of most deposits of rock and potash salts as well as in successful creation and application of new methodology and technics (e.g. chemostratigraphy, resource aspects of facies analysis, 3D images of salt deposits and structures, interferometry) to predict salt occurrences with optimal resource parameters, explain the tectonic and stratigraphic problems and to propose tools favoring the mining safety. The data regarding regional geology, collected during a century, enabled estimation of accessible prospective resources of both salt types and selection of optimal salt occurrences forfuture management as storages for hydrocarbons, gas (air, hydrogen) and safe waste disposals.

Opis:
Gas in shales occurs as a constituent of rock and its resources can be estimated in a similar way as the metal content in ore deposit. The cutoff gas content in rock is the basic parameter defining deposit boundaries. It is proposed that the cutoffs in gas-bearing rocks are 2 m3 gas/t and 15-m deposit thickness. In case of lack of sufficient data, the deposit boundaries for resources estimation may be delineated in a defined distance from prospecting boreholes, supported by geophysical data, if possible. Discovered gas resources may be evaluated by volumetric methods. For reserve estimation, dynamic methods should be applied based on shale fracturing results. Following the stages of prospecting and exploration, decreasing uncertainty of the deposit resources/reserves evaluation may be expressed by D, C, B and A categories, or with the use of PRMS classification system.

Opis:
Results of supplementary hydrogeochemical analyses, conducted in the Kampinos National Park (KPN), its buffer zone and in the reserve “Bielany Forest” (“Las Bielański”) allowed revising the location of monitoring points and proposing a basic set of analyses of quality, ground-water level. This set includes measurements of physical-chemical parameters enabling to assess water quality and to define causes and consequences of groundwater chemical composition changes. Analyses of the water level monitoring results and selected hydrogeochemical indicators allows for assessment at antopopressure intensity. The survey results led to suggesting necessary range of physical-chemical tests and frequency of monitoring in affected areas under different antropopressure level.

Opis:
Southeastern Poland is one of the oldest petroleum provinces in the world. Although hydrocarbon production has been conducted in this region since the middle of 19th century, there is still a good potential for more discoveries. 9 billion cubic meters of high methane gas reserves reported in the years 2000-2006, when combined with the previously discovered gas fields, essentially satisfy gas demand for this area. Currently, Miocene deposit of the Carpathian Foredeep is the most prolific exploration target area with more than 100 discoveries of high methane gas. The total reserves of these fields are 138 billion cubic meters, and the cumulative production is more than 90 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Large gas fields in terms of area and reserves that have already been discovered are followed by present discoveries of fields with relatively smaller area, their reserves are up to 2 billion cubic meters. Current exploration efforts are focused on good understanding of the sub-miocene basement configuration as well as detecting of seismic anomalies directly related to natural gas accumulations. Another very important element of exploration strategy for Southern Poland is the Mesozoic and Paleozoic deposits of the Carpathian Foredeep. The most prospective for discovering of sizeable hydrocarbon fields are Cretaceous (Cenomanian) sandstones and Upper Jurassic carbonates, locally also Middle Jurassic sandstone as well as Lower Carboniferous and Devonian carbonates. So far 13 gas fields and 10 oil fields have been discovered in the Mesozoic and Paleozoic of the Carpathian Foredeep and the sub-Carpathian basement with booked reserves of 7.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 4.7 million tons of oil. The cumulative production amounts to 6.1 billion cubic meters of gas and 4.3 million tons of oil. Different exploration problems have been encountered in the Carpathians. Most of the fields which have been discovered in the Flysch Carpathians occur in shallow, steep, narrow, commonly thrusted and faulted folds. Oil and gas fields discovered so far in the Carpathians have small reserves. Additionally, discovered and booked reserves of existing oil and gas fields are depleted to a large extent. 17 gas fields and 67 oil fields have been discovered in the Carpathians. Booked reserves amount to 16.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 12.3 million tons of oil. Cumulative production has been 15.2 billion cubic meters of gas and 11.9 million tons of oil. To sum up, it should be emphasized that the bulk of gas reserves discovered, booked and developed recently in Southern Poland comes from the autochthonous Miocene deposits. This trend, which involves high methane gas, is expected to continue for the next few years. Potential oil discoveries can be attributed mainly to the flysch Carpathians and Paleozoic, but requires more research and further exploration on a larger scale.

Opis:
The Pomorzany mine, currently the only one Zn-Pb mine in Poland and one of the largest underground mines of this type worldwide (output 2.5 Mt/y) exceeded 40 years of operation on the MV-type deposit. In 1960, the first geological report on its resources based on drillings was issued. Data from this long period were used to analyse the resource management and evolution of reserve tonnage and quality due to changes in the economic and technical viability as well as to qualify different categories of mine reserves and losses due to the ongoing operation. The mine project was based on geological resource of 97.6 Mt ore averaging 4.12% Zn and 1.42% Pb. Resources extracted with documented low losses and those remaining in situ amount to 92.7 Mt averaging 4.18% Zn and 1.27% Pb. These figures indicate the high accuracy of the exploration results and cost-effective management of resources. The observed trend of ore reserve increase over the last decade gives hope of delimiting at least 3 Mt over the next three years. The mine, which was planned for a 30-year life cycle, has sufficient reserves until 2016, and under favourable market conditions, may extend its life up to 2018.

Opis:
Gas produced from coal can be subdivided into three categories: coalbed methane (CBM), coal mine methane (CMM) and abandoned mine methane (AMM). CBM is extracted from virgin coal using wells drilled from the surface. In recent years horizontal drilling is widely used as a primary CBM recovery technique. A pair of wells - a vertical production well intersected by a horizontal multilateral well - is considered the most effective in dewatering a coal reservoir and thus enables maximizing its productivity. Although CBM world resources are huge (100-216 bcm), only a few countries produce coalbed gas commercially. While the US is still the leader, Australia has the fastest CBM production growth. It has been observed that many mature CBM plays reveal highly variable productivity, possibly due to coal heterogeneity. Therefore, CBM reserves/resources should be estimated using probabilistic methods. In spite of its substantial CBM resource potential, Poland has produced only coal mine methane (CMM) whereas significant efforts of CBM exploration conducted in the 1990s failed to flow gas in commercial quantities due to low permeability. Dart Energy operates a CBM exploration license in the Upper Silesia and has recently finished testing the CBM production pilot using a surface-to-inseam horizontal well with vertical production well intersection. This state-of-the-art CBM completion technology has been used for the first time in Poland and, hopefully, will unlock the sizeable CBM resource of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin.
