Opis:
The open-pit excavation of minerals results mainly in landscape transformation. In consequence, a new anthropogenic landscape form occursarises, and its dimensions are increasing with the progress of excavation – at certain point, the resulting terrain changes become irreversible. The quarry, left abandonedafter the mining process, can be filled with water and, thus, forms a water reservoir. This paper is focused on the analysis of a number of reservoirs which were established in closed gravel and limestone quarries in the area of Kraków. They were located in highly industrialized or environmentally valuable terrains. As time elapsed, both types became attractive leisure sites for nearby residents due to the natural succession of plants and high water quality. The complete usage of their values, through implementation of adequate rehabilitation and adaptation measures, would allow them to be sterling areas fulfilling certain functions, which constitute these reservoirs’considerable attractiveness and harmonious composition in the landscape.

Opis:
The paper provides an overview analysis concerning the major elements of the environment of mining areas, described based on research to develop a method for the assessment of flooding threat in mining areas. The mechanism of flooding-induced changes in the surface of mining areas under conditions of restoring natural water flows in the USCB is analyzed. The state-of-the-art has been discussed in the context of environmental elements used to evaluate water invasion in mining and post-mining areas, taken from hydrogeology, hydrology, mining, and environmental protection studies. The selected features of the mining environment are characterized, in particular: the area limiting the flow of water, including the surface of the mining area and the aquifer base, local outflow bases and local water drainage basins, depression funnel, hydraulic connections between mines, surface waterways and natural lakes and ponds as well as inundated areas, floods, morphological troughs, depression and non-flood basins.

Opis:
The paper concerns the Liban quarry in Cracow, which is located in the Podgórze district of Cracow. It shows the outline of the geological structure and history of quarrying, while the current topography and dominant elements of the relief of this object are discussed in more detail. Anthropogenic changes in the natural environment of the quarry have revealed its geodiversity and enhanced its biodiversity. It contains vertical rocky walls, debris cones, waste-heaps, a vast undulated surface of the quarry bottom, as well as diverse flora and fauna. Within the borders of the Liban quarry, the remains of industrial buildings and the staging for the film entitled "Schindler's List” have survived. Despite the fact that the extraction has already finished a long time ago, the quarry has not been systematically reclaimed or developed.

Opis:
In NW Spain, on the border of Galicia, Asturias and Castile and Leon, in the Rio Sil River, the exploitation of gold placer deposits tooks place. Gold from alluvium was exploited by the Celts, but the Romans developed large-scale exploitation. The paper describes the attractive landscape, which is a relict ofa Roman gold mine. This mine was probably the largest in the Roman Empire. Gold occurs in the Neogene alluvium (~20 Ma years). The deposit is probably a weathering product of gold-bearing quartz veins. Three deposit series have been distinguished. They are composed of conglomerates with intercalations of finer-grained material - sand and clay. The top series, Las Medulas, has the thickness of >100 m, the middle series, Santalla, has the thickness of 0-30 m, and the most gold-bearing (20-100 mg/m3, at the base even 60-300 mg/m3) and intensely red gangue Orellan series found at the base is 0-25 m thick. The basement is represented by Devonian and Silurian limestones, shales and quartzites, Ordovician limestones, dolomites and shales, and Cambrian quartzites with slates at the top. The deposit is cut by numerous faults, which form blocks, and are the cause of variations in the level of the deposit series. The mining technique used by the Romans is also characterized. In the mine, where mining works were carried out on the surface of1228 ha, about 1626 tons of gold were exploited during the periodfrom ~25 BC to the early third century AD,. A technique ofruina montium was usedfor gold exploitation. It consists of drilling in excavations ofpoorly compacted rocks - tunnels, adits, shafts (up to a depth of 100 m). Through these excavations, the waterfallingfrom above was transferred. Water under pressure has burst and washed out the deposit. Presently, the remains of the Las Medulas deposit series are represented by the characteristic red rocks, which are poorly compacted. They create morphology of the mining landscape, which is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

The aim of the article is to show the present-day directions in land use planning of selected geosites in Chêciñskie Hills and their further development prospects. It pays special attention to the possibilities of development in post-mining areas for both educational and tourist needs. The author also suggests his own area division of the area, which reflects its future directions in land use planning and facilities development. The article describes three geosites: Zelejowa Mountain, Rzepka and Beylina and Miedzianka Mountain. It highlights their natural and cultural values and shows possibilities of land use planning in the context of geotourism and geological education in the area of Chęcińskie Hills.

Opis:
The need to limit the expansion of cities, towards green suburbs, makes it necessary to take action to restore the functions of degraded areas located within urbanised spaces. An area with still unexploited potential is land abandoned after mining. A limitation to their effective use is the lack of support from administrative bodies on the natural and cultural significance of abandoned pits and the fear of the built environment of having to deal with the environmental burdens associated with the effects of former exploitation. The aim of this article is to present the results of cooperation between the geological administration and the scientific community, in terms of sustainable development of post-mining spaces, exemplified by a field workshop organised for students of the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, in the academic year 2020/2021, in the area of the former Middle Triassic limestone excavation pit, Sadowa Góra, in Jaworzno (in the Silesian Voivodeship). The combination of expert knowledge in architectural design and landscape architecture with the practical experience of post-mining site administrators was used as a basis for educational activiies, in the implementation of a project task to design an interdisciplinary research station space in the former Sadowa Góra quarry in Jaworzno, surrounded by an open and friendly social space, exploiting the potential of objects with unique natural and cultural values, discovered or produced in the process of rock exploitation.

Opis:
The article presents the geological features of rarely described ferruginous nickel ores in carbonate rocks. They are exploited mostly in central Greece, giving about 1% of world production. Geochemical associations of laterite-derived nickel ores and bauxites occurring in carbonate formations of similar age in the not distant area are presented. The deposits formed in several stages starting with the lateritic alteration of nearby serpentinite and redeposition of water-suspended saprolite into karstic forms of Jurassic limestones. Ferruginous clayey material was sealed by transgressive Cenomanian marly sediments and was subject to further transformations in the vadose zone of the uplifted rock massive. Mining geology, environmental and economic aspects of exploitation are analysed. Finally, guidelines for the land use in post-mining areas are provided.
