Opis:
Abstract. The main task of research was to quantitatively and qualitatively identify rare and associated elements that occur within a cassiterite-sulphide mineralization zone hosted Precambrian - Lower Paleozoic metamorphic rochi in the Stara Kamienica schist belt making up the part of the Izera-Karhonosze Massif. Over 70 samples from archive boreholes and abandoned Sn-ore mines were examined using modern methods like portable pXRF, geochemical analysis (ICP-MS, WD-XRF, GF-AAS), polarizing microscopy, electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and scaning electron microscopy with EDS system (SEM-EDS). Preliminary results show interesting concentrations of associated elements such as Zn (max 0.56%), Pb (max 0.7%), Cu (max 0.33%), As (max 0.55%), and some rare elements like In, Re, Nb, Co, Bi, Pt, V, La and Ce.

Opis:
In the vicinity of the Konopiska municipality (SW margin of Częstochowa) ore-bearing clays have been deposited. These formations, only locally covered by younger sediments, constitute direct foundation subsoil, so their geotechnical parameters may conditionate founding possibility of various structures. The paper presents results of a series of experiments (conducted accordingly to PN-B-04481: 1988) dedicated to estimation of the geological-engineering properties of these clays in terms of the possibility of their use as a founding ground or a material to build earth structures. It has been learned that the tested soils contain high amounts of clayey fraction, occur in semi-solid state and show relatively high shear-strength parameters. Their natural water content is close to the optimum one (18-20%), at which a clear peak of the dry density (about 1.7 Mg/m3) is noted. Low colloidal activity proves that they are prone to expansion. All these properties indicate that they can constitute a competent subsoil for typical structures of the first or second geotechnical category, unless obviously the ultimate and serviceability limit states are checked and satisfied for the particular geotechnical case.

Opis:
The study area is located within the Silesia-Cracow zinc-lead ore district. Secondary minerals were collected from the reclaimed zinc-lead underground mine in Bolesław and from the currently operated zinc-lead underground mine Olkusz-Pomorzany. The main goal of investigations was the geochemical and mineralogical comparison of weathering zone developed within horst and tectonic graben. Semi-quantitative chemical composition was determined using the SEM-EDS method and quantitative chemical composition was determined employing the EMP microanalysis. Mineralogical investigations were performed with the XRD. The predominant zinc mineral of weathering zone located within tectonic horst is hemimorphite. No primary and secondary lead minerals were observed in this zone. In contrast, the weathering zone within tectonic graben contains secondary carbonate zinc and lead minerals. These differences could result from pervasive sulfide minerals (especially marcasite) in a graben unit, and limestones which are the main gangue rock of this zinc-lead ore.

During the period of 60 years, the mining and metallurgical industry has been developed to such extent that Poland is now among the worlds’major producers ofcopper and silver. The discovery, made on 23 March 1957 by a team of specialists from the Geological Institute under the leadership of Jan Wyżykowski, was followed by the preparation of the first geological documentation of the copper deposit, containing the results ofpioneering works that laid the foundation for the knowledge of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline geology. This discovery marked the beginning of the recognition of the deposit and gave rise to further exploration for prospective areas elsewhere in SW Poland. Later studies of numerous drill cores strongly indicate that the Zechstein copper-bearing series contains a very large volume of prognostic, prospective and hypothetical resources, rimming the oxidized Rote Fäule areas also outside the Lubin-Sieroszowice Copper District. Extensive deep exploration drilling is required to verify the resource potential in several prospects. The long-term challenges demand new solutions for the mining industry of the future within the EU, to enable the reindustrialization of Europe.

The Pomorzany mine, currently the only one Zn-Pb mine in Poland and one of the largest underground mines of this type worldwide (output 2.5 Mt/y) exceeded 40 years of operation on the MV-type deposit. In 1960, the first geological report on its resources based on drillings was issued. Data from this long period were used to analyse the resource management and evolution of reserve tonnage and quality due to changes in the economic and technical viability as well as to qualify different categories of mine reserves and losses due to the ongoing operation. The mine project was based on geological resource of 97.6 Mt ore averaging 4.12% Zn and 1.42% Pb. Resources extracted with documented low losses and those remaining in situ amount to 92.7 Mt averaging 4.18% Zn and 1.27% Pb. These figures indicate the high accuracy of the exploration results and cost-effective management of resources. The observed trend of ore reserve increase over the last decade gives hope of delimiting at least 3 Mt over the next three years. The mine, which was planned for a 30-year life cycle, has sufficient reserves until 2016, and under favourable market conditions, may extend its life up to 2018.

Signs of mineralization were found in historical boreholes of the Będkowska Valley region within granodiorites, porphyry dykes and mostly in country rocks, which are represented chiefly by Ediacaran meta-mudstones and meta-claystones. Sulphide mineralization of epigenetic character and hydrothermal origin is represented mainly by pyrite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, sphalerite and galena, which appear as both impregnations and quartz, quartz-feldspar, quartz-carbonate and quartz-chlorite veinlets. Both clastic and magmatic rocks are marked by numerous metasomatic alterations like sericitization, biotitization, feldspatization, pyritization and chloritization.

Opis:
The characteristic of ore mineralization in the immediate vicinity of fault zones in the Lower Zechstein deposits is shown. All presented outcomes are on the basis of rock material taken from mining profiles in the Radwanice-Gaworzyce deposit area. During conducted studies ore minerals and oxide minerals were identified under optical microscope in reflected light and photographic documentation of the examined samples was undertaken. In addition, microprobe examination was carried out for selected samples from the studied profiles along with calculations of the chemical composition of individual ore minerals. In all analyzed profiles, Rote Fäule oxidized zone (enriched with hematite) was found, which occurs at various levels of the Kupferschiefer series and the reduced zone (enriched with ore minerals) over the oxidized series. The redox front cuts across the boundaries oflithostratigraphic units, moving from the Weis- liegend to the higher parts of the Zechstein Limestone. The primary ore mineralization in the examined profiles is the chalcocite-digenite association with subordinate bornite and covelitte recorded in the reduced series. Furthermore, the secondary sulphide mineralization in the direct vicinity of tectonic deformation and faults superimposed on primary ore mineralization and hematite enrichments is observed and it is represented by chalcopyrite, bornite, tennantite, tetrahedrite and pyrite, both within reduced and oxidized zones.

Opis:
Sieroszowice S-1 borehole was drilled by the Geological Institute under the drilling program conducted by Jan Wyżykowski in the previously unexplored central part of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, contributing to the discovery of the largest European copper ore deposit. The Zechstein copper-bearing series was reached on 23 March 1957, with the ore mineralization interval at a depth of 656.30-658.26 m. Detailed results of chemical analyses and petrographic investigation were included in the ore deposit geological documentation compiled in 1959, but new research methods currently applicable enable the complementary studies to acquire new results. New findings are based on compilation of reflected-light microscopy, CAMECA SX100 electron microprobe studies and LEO scanning electron microscope observations. As a result of the supplementary research, the qualitative and quantitative composition of ore minerals along with the indication of their chemical composition in microprobe studies as well as their distribution in the ore-mineralized interval are presented in detail in this paper. Ore mineralization occurs in the shale-carbonate series and it is generally represented by sulphides of Cu-Fe-S system (chalcopyrite, bornite), accompanied by digenite and covellite, occasionally geerite and spionkopite, but one of the ore intervals is dominated by chalcocite associated with bornite. Pyrite, galena and sphalerite commonly accompany copper sulphides, especially in the uppermost part of the copper-bearing series. A few previously unidentified minerals, such as native silver, silver amalgams, and clausthalite have also been identified. The Weissliegend is characterized by oxidative alteration, typical for the Rote Fäule pattern, and contains only relict sulphide mineralization represented by minor chalcopyrite and pyrite locally corroded by hematite. It displays an elevated concentration of gold as well.

Opis:
The depletion of Zn-Pb ores in developed mining areas and the increase in metal prices have resulted in the need to search for new deposits which have not been exploited yet. A project of drilling new exploratory boreholes should be preceded by an interpretation of archival geological data. To obtain the most valuable information on the geological structure leading to its plausible interpretation, it seems to be purposeful and advisable to apply some geophysical methods that are reasonably cheap in comparison with others. The method of electrical resistivity tomography, which in this research uses two of many measurement protocols such as Schlumberger array and dipole-dipole array, is particularly useful. Computer interpretation of geophysical results allows a high resolution 2D and 3D geoelectrical model of rock mass to be created. The study was carried out using the multi-electrode Lund Imaging System manufactured by ABEM, Sweden. In order to evaluate the practical application of this method, Zawiercie Zn-Pb ore deposits were chosen as the area used in previous scientific research. Taking into account mineralization in its economic aspect, the deposits occur at relatively shallow depths of 50-120 m. In the investigated region, the Triassic carbonate formation overlays the Devonian rocks. The Keuper low-resistance clay, occurring on the surface, provides a very good electrical contact between an electrode and the soil. This is why there are favourable measurement conditions in this area. The boundaries between the Keuper, Devonian and Triassic formations are clearly noticeable in the resistivity cross-sections obtained. On the basis of the ERT results, it is possible to locate faulting zones as well as karst systems. One of the profiles clearly shows the occurrence of a low-resistance anomaly correlated with Zn-Pb mineralization, which was confirmed by borehole surveys. However, this early stage of the research with the use of the ERT method cannot unequivocally identify the ore body, particularly as it was conditioned by the limited depth of prospecting.

Opis:
Miocene aged heavy mineral (HMin) alluvial cones and regolith sands above ore-bearing gabbro and amphibolite/diabase rock zone were considered as a prospective metallotect in the area of Devonian ophiolite Ślęża Massif in the Sudets (SW Poland). The available research data from the Sobótka region indicated that the ultramafic gabbro intrusion has an interesting titanium ore enrichment with minerals such as ilmenite and titanomagnetite in the Strzegomiany-Kunów primary ultramafic rocks. The mean composition of ore gabbro samples taken from the surface contained eg; Fe -14.21%, TiO2 - 4.92%, V2O5 - 0,15. Conducted geophysical surveys in the vicinity of the presumed gabbroic rocks at thin Quaternary sediments cover, suggested the variable content ofa primary mineralization, which could be related to the increased content of heavy minerals fractions over the bed in the form of regolith or as a secondary deposit. Titanium minerals such as ilmenite, sphene, were enriched during the oxidation process and created secondary bed, where the concentrates of titanium oxides: rutile, leucoxene or oxidized ilmenite may have a high titanium content as high as 70-90%. Placer HMin sands are at present a major source of titanium deposits worldwide and the largest industrial value due to their large resources, simplicity and purity of exploitation and the ability to yield concentrates of HMin: ilmenite, rutile, pseudobrookite, anatase and leucoxene, sometimes in the company of valuable zircon, monazite or garnet. These deposits in the world are mainly used in metallurgical and chemical industries, eg; the production ofpaints and pigments used in the pharmacy, paper and paint industry. Similar observations have been reported from the region of Spain, Portugal, western Australia andfrom the south of India. Preliminary results of presented study indicate that the Strzegomiany-Kunów region can be considered as prospective not only because of the presence ofprimary titanium mineralization in gabbro, especially in diallage gabbro, amphibolite (diabase) and serpentinite, but also a presence of enriched titanium mineralization in regolith over gabbro and in clastic sediments on the foreland of Ślęża Massif.

Opis:
The paper presents results of studies on storm-generated surface runoff, a phenomenon belonging to the least known factors responsible for migration of pollutants to water environment. The results of determinations of pH, conductivity as well as content of Ca, Zn, Cd, and Pb are found to be useful as the main indicators of pollution spread by waters running from dam slopes of pond in which tailings from flotation of Zn-Pb ore are disposed. Rain water leaches fine fractions of carbonate-sulfate wastes (represented mainly by dolomite, 73%, and Fe sulfides – marcasite, up to 20%) which leads to change in character of surface runoff water to that of SO4-Ca hydro-chemical type. Among the leached metals significantly important for the environment are Zn, Cd and Pb whose concentrations exceed threshold values for surface and/or groundwater of IV quality class. Acceptable concentrations in waste waters are frequently exceeded by sulfates and incidentally by zinc. Variability of the analyzed concentration indices from the years 2008 and 2009 indicates influence of weather conditions on chemical composition of surface runoff water from slopes of tailings pond of flotation plant of MVT ores.

The issue of three-dimensional geological modelling of stratoidal copper and silver ore deposit in the Fore-Sudetic Homocline has been the subject of hot discussions for many years. Formation of a single layer of deposit body can suggest the ease of interpretation of its form and structure, putting into question the need of three-dimensional visualization. The problem of building and updating a model is directly related to the production scale of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. which is held over an area of495 km2 with an annual progression of around 480 km of underground workings in three mines, which also includes additional exploration of the deposit body. An important step in the time-consuming 3D geological modelling process is the appropriate selection of previously prepared data and the spatial dimension for the target model - in accordance with its intended purpose. The process of 3D geological modelling, currently carried out at KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., can be divided into two related steps: structural modelling and grade modelling. The components of structural models are used in the grade modelling process, acting as a set of geological constraints during the grade estimation process. The products of both steps find practical application in many processes in a mining company.

Opis:
The authors carried out petrographic, mineralogical, and chemical analyses (bulk chemical composition and microanalyses of mineral chemical composition) of NWA 4446 carbonaceous chondrite. NWA 4446 chondrite is classified as CV3, S2, W2. This meteorite is a rock fragment most likely from one of the C-type asteroids orbiting the Sun in the outer part of the asteroid belt. It represents the matter formed at the earliest stages of the formation of extrasola bodies in the solar system. As a result of the research, the authors documented a wider range of variation in the chemical composition of olivine crystals (Fa: 0.67-46.57 mol%) in the matrix and chondrules, and a much narrower range of variation in the chemical com- position of pyroxene crystals (Fs: 0.90–3.35 mol%) against the data used for the classification of the meteorite. The characteristics of the chondrules, ranging in size from 0.5 to more than 1 mm, allowed concluding that they constitute about 60% of the meteorite’s vol- ume, in which they form many structural and mineral varieties PO, POP, BO, PP and RP chondrules were observed. The remaining 40% of the chondrite volume is a matrix consisting of small crystals of pyroxenes, olivines, glass, as well as opaque minerals: sulphides, FeNi alloy, native copper and gold grains, carbonaceous substance, and compact CAIs. The mineral and chemical composi- tion of CAIs shows that their dominant mineral is melilite, accompanied by diopside and spinel. The chemical composition of spinel and diopside is very similar to their total chemical formulas, while the composition of melilite shows a significant sodium deficiency. Among the opaque minerals, one phase of the FeNi dominates - awaruite (Ni 3 Fe), and sulphides are represented by troilite (FeS) and mackinawite ((Fe,Ni) 9 S 8 ). Moreover, grains of native copper with an admixture of gold and grains of native gold with an admixture of platinum, nickel and copper with a size of several μm were identified. Taking into account the admixtures contained in the above-mentioned opaque minerals (mainly Co and Cu), the parent rock of the carbonaceous chondrite NWA 4446 can be considered to have been mineralized with Fe, Ni, Co and Cu ore minerals with the content of Au and Pt. This means that, we can expect deposits of native forms of the above-mentioned metals and sulphides on the parent bodies of carbonaceous chondrites of the CV group - C-type asteroids.
