Opis:
Deposits of the Cambrian Series 2 and 3 of the Holy Cross Mountains, comprising sandstones, and silty and clayey mudstones, are located on the Małopolska Block which is part of the Trans-European Suture Zone. Most recent geophysical data point to the proximal nature of this structural element with regard to the Baltica palaeocontinent. The trilobite assemblages are dominated by Ellipsocephalidae, generally accompanied by Holmiidae in the lower part, and by Paradoxididae in the upper part of the studied interval. They display a significant evolutionary trend, correlatable with the development of contemporary assemblages in Avalonia and Gondwana rather than those of Baltica. Discrepancies between the basement affinity and the dominant trilobites may be explained by the influence of strong larva-carrying currents from Avalonia and Gondwana.

Opis:
This paper presents a brief description ofgeological surveying conducted between 1920 and 1939 in the Western Volhynian area by Professor Jan Samsonowicz who discovered Carboniferous deposits with bituminous coal beds. After the Second World War, the Geological Institute proposed a deep-hole project which was aimed at the exploration of the geological setting of Poland. In this connection, a few boreholes were drilled throughout the Lublin Voivodeship area, resulting in identification of Carboniferous deposits with bituminous coal beds. In the late 50s of the 20th century, the researchers working on coal deposits and the explorer J. Porzycki were moved to the Upper Silesian Field Station in Czeladź, which was transformed into the Upper Silesian Branch of the Geological Institute in Sosnowiec. It was this place where a research team for Carboniferous deposits, including coal-bearing deposits in Lublin area, was created. A few projects for geological works were prepared with the purpose to discover coal deposits in the area between Hrubieszów and Łuków. The first monograph of Carboniferous beds in the Lublin Coal Basin was published in 1966 (Rühle, 1966). In 1967, the most potential area was indicated as well as the Łęczna and Chelm bituminous coal deposits were identified and then documented during1971-1974. Further documentation works were taken over by the coal industry while the branch in Sosnowiec continued the research at a regional level, aiming mainly at coal deposits and simultaneously started with research on aluminum ore deposits at the base of Carboniferous strata in the northeastern part of the Lublin Coal Basin. The aforementioned research team determined geological and mining conditions of coal deposit occurrences, Carboniferous deposits stratigraphy, coal and gangue petrography, lithostratigraphy, origin and sedimentation conditions of coal-bearing formation etc. The results were presented in the monograph (Dembowski, Porzycki, 1988; Zdanowski, Żakowa, 1995), geological atlas (Porzycki, 1978; Zdanowski, 1999) and numerous articles published in Poland and abroad. The research team from Sosnowiec presented their results not only at national conferences but also at International Geological Congresses, International Congresses on the Carboniferous and Permian, one of which was organized in Cracow in 1995 by the team alone. In recent years the team from the Upper Silesian Branch rejoined the process of documentation of coal deposits through cooperation with domestic and foreign companies interested in possible future coal extraction in the Lublin area.

Lower Silesian Branch of the Polish Geological Institute (OD) was founded in 1949, 70years ago. It conducts geological and hydrogeological research as well as geological cartography in the area of Lower Silesia. In the 1970s until the end of the 1990s, during the period of the OD stabilization, the implementation of regional geological surveys started with the use of geophysical methods and deep drilling. These studies were conducted in the majority of tectonostratigraphic units - in the North Sudetic and Central Sudetic depressions, in the upper Nysa Kłodzka graben, in the Bardo structure and in the area of Foresudetic block. Geological and cartographic works on a scale of1 : 25,000 and 1 : 50,000 covered the entire area of Lower Silesia. In the mid-1990s, the edition of the Map of1 : 25,000 (134 sheets) was finalized, and the reambulation of Maps 1 : 50,000 (43 sheets) in 2009.

The Kraków Branch of the Polish Geological Society (PGS) was established in 1922 and is the oldest and largest regional branch of the PGS. Initially, it was managed directly by the PGS Main Board, and from 1963, it has its own board. From the beginning, it has been one of the most active centres of the PGS and supported the work of the PGS management board in organizational activities in the country and in foreign cooperation. During World War II, its members gave secret lectures, and in the post-war period, they took part in reactivating the PGS activities and establishing both other branches and most of the specialist sections of PGS. The branch organized about 30% of all annual PGS Scientific Meetings and several dozen other scientific symposia and popular scientific sessions. It was the centre to initiate the organization of Polish Geological Congresses in the 21st century. The Kraków Branch includes representatives of all scientific institutes from Kraków and beyond, dealing with Earth sciences.

Opis:
The Upper Silesian Branch of the Polish Geological Society (PGS) was established in 1962 as one of the first regional branches of the PGS. Due to the specificity of the region, geologists working in Upper Silesia were most often concerned with the exploration and exploitation of hard coal in the USCB, but also undertook research on the geology of the USCB margin, polymetallic deposits, hydrocarbons, hydrogeology, and environmental protection in areas of mining activities. These problems were expressed in the topics of PGS annual meetings, field sessions and seminars. During the 60 years of activity, five PGS meetings were organized, the topics of which concerned the latest achievements in geology in the region. Already in the first years of operation of the Upper Silesian Branch of PGS, it was noticed that a special feature of this branch is the considerable dispersion of geologists working in various cities of the voivodeship. However, despite the difficulties resulting from this fact, the Upper Silesian Branch is active and it has been consolidating the scattered community of geologists in the region of Upper Silesia since its establishment.

The Gdańsk Branch of the Polish Geological Society was established in 1962. Earlier, geologists from Gdańsk were active within the framework of the Kraków Branch. The number of members of the branch varied over time -from about 30 to over 100 people. The Gdańsk Branch plays an important role in integrating the geological community of the Tri-City. Over 180 lectures were delivered at regular meetings of the branch members. The Gdańsk Branch was also the organizer of several annual meetings of the Society - in 1958,1990 and2002 in Gdańsk, and in 1972 in Cetniewo. The first annual meeting at the seaside took place in 1935 in Gdynia, before the creation of the Gdańsk Branch. The research results presented at the annual meetings showed a continuous progress in geological exploration of the Pomerania region and the Baltic Sea bottom.

Opis:
Geologists from Warsaw have been active in works of the Polish Geological Society since the very beginning of its existence (the first PGS status was adopted in 1921). Although the Warsaw Branch (WB) of PGS was established only in 1923, organization of the first PGS annual scientific meetings in Kielce in 1921 was entrusted to the Warsaw geologist Jan Czarnocki. Jan Lewiński was elected the first chairman of the Warsaw Branch of PGS in 1923. In the same year, he organized the third PGS annual scientific meeting. However, it was not until the General Assembly in 1930 that the autonomy of the PGS branches was decided. In the pre-war period, members of the WB PGS organized the sixth PGS annual scientific meeting (ASM) in Katowice and the 12th PGS ASM in Sandomierz in 1925. The ASM in Kielce, scheduled for September 1, 1939, did not take place. After the war, in March 1946, the Warsaw Branch of PGS was reactivated and a year later it organized the 20th PGS ASM in the western part of the Holy Cross Mts. In 1952, the jubilee 25th PGS ASM was organized in Warsaw. Two subsequent conventions concerned the geology of north-eastern Poland: the 45th ASM in 1973 and the 64th ASM in 1993. In 2012, the Warsaw Branch organized the second Polish Geological Congress in Warsaw. The 83 ,rd PGSASM was held in the Lublin region in2014, the 84th PGSASM in the Holy Cross Mts in 2015, and the 86th PGS ASM in Łuków in 2018.

Opis:
The specificity of the activities of the Lower Silesian Branch of the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute (PGI-NRI) is due to main factors: (1) mosaic-like geological structure of Lower Silesia, (2) the wealth of various mineral resources, (3) centuries-old mining traditions of the region. Initially, the researches included mainly geological cartography, subsequently expanding the scope of work to include regional (structural) geology and deposit geology. The contribution of applied geology, especially hydrogeology and environmental geology, has increased significantly in the previous decades. Three chapters present different periods of the Lower Silesian Branch of the PGI-NRI with its most important milestones for the Polish geology in the last seven decades. This division includes three periods: (1) years of development (1949-1989); (2) years of stagnation (1989-2013), and (3) years of disorganization (2014-2019). The period of intensification of geological researches carried out by the Lower Silesian Branch of the PGI-NRI lasted until the years of the so-called system transformation. During that period, the programs of deep boreholes were finished. In the 1990s, detailed cartographic works in Lower Silesia were completed. Acute shortage of new factographic material caused the necessity to analyze the archival material stored during previous decades at the Lower Silesian Branch. In 2014, it has practically decommissioned the regional branches, including the Lower Silesian Branch. Full centralization has led to the liquidation of both the branches’ independence and their previous focus on the implementation of tasks related to the specificity of a given region. In the forthcoming future, new challenges would depend on a proper organization chart of the PGI-NRI and the position of the regional branches in this scheme.
