Opis:
The main aim of this contribution is to combine a Python-supported analysis of X-ray microtomography (µCT) images and the transmitted-light microscopy to resolve the factors controlling the variability of petrophysical parameters in carbonate rocks. A self-developed Python script for the evaluation of pore connectivity and the computation of pore sizes based on µCT data was prepared. The script was launched on a carbonate sample with drawn from a drill core representing the Late Permian Zechstein Limestone (Ca1) formation from the Wolsztyn Ridge area in West Poland. The sample was taken from the upper part of the isolated Kokorzyn Reef, corresponding to a brachiopod and bivalve-rich zone. The plug had a cylindrical shape, the diameter of 2.54 cm and the height of approximately 4.6cm. The entire volume of the plug was scanned using a GE Nanotom Sdevice. The 3D-reconstructeddatasetobtainedwith spatial resolution of 0.02 mm underwent cropping, contrast adjustment, noise reduction and porosity extraction using open-source Fiji software. The binarized porosity image was loaded into the Python script. Python scripting was found efficient in carbonate pore system examination. The code first extracted the connected pore system of the largest volume and computed the smallest distances between porosity voxels and corresponding pore walls. The obtained results were confronted with the spatially-adjusted microphotographs taken in plane-polarized transmitted light. The results have shown that narrow and isolated pores occurred within the spines of brachiopods. The largest voids were found inside the brachiopod shells. Moreover, many pores were associated with partially dissolved fragments of bivalves. Porosity reduction was -most outlined in the zones showing the scarcity of fossils.

Opis:
Limitations of macroscopic measurements and observations of glacial tills, no matter how informative they are, have contributed to the development of micromorphological analysis first in thin sections, since the 80’s using X-ray computed tomography, and recently X-ray computed microtomography (μ-CT). The цCT has found wide applications in science including earth sciences where is used for imagining various geological samples in the 3D view. The sampling procedure and preparation of samples do not generate much effort, and eventually, allow analysis of samples with a preserved undisturbed structure. Herein, we present a short review and methodology of μCT as well as its application to the study of glacial tills. For example, we analyzed a subglacial till sample from the lee side of a drumlin located in the Stargard drumlin field area, NW Poland. The results show a distinctive bimodal pattern of clast fabrics which is interpreted as a result of subglacial till squeezing. Smaller clasts are obliquely oriented to the major direction of the ice flow whereas the larger clasts orientation is approximately in accordance with the major shear stress direction. Overall, our data emphasize the potential of the μ-CT in glacial till studies.

Opis:
The paper considers the use of high-resolution X-ray computed microtomography (μCT) as a possible method in engineering-geological laboratory research for indicating areas of weakness, location of fissures and determining homogeneity of clay samples. Furthermore, the studies were used to provide methodological guidance. Mio-Pliocene (Neogene) clay samples were taken from an excavation site of the Kopernik underground station in Warsaw. First, natural humidity, bulk density and fraction analyses of samples were made. Secondly, μCT scans were conducted, with the use of copper filters. In the final stage of the study, internal structure images for samples were processed and analysed. Furthermore, a numerical model of dry sample was developed. During the study it was observed that the increase of temperature caused by X-ray radiation has a destructive effect on the sample. This effect was eliminated by applying a protective layer on the sample, using engine oil. The article quantifies the ratio of radiation-heated fissure volume to dry sample volume and the natural fissure volume to sample volume. Moreover, sample areas with different densities or chemical composition were studied. The results lead to the conclusion that the μCT technique is applicable to characterise of Mio-Pliocene clay, supplying internal structure assessment and fissure quantification that allow for samples verification to further engineering geology in-depth analysis.
