Opis:
The study conducted in the granodiorite quarry at Łażany (Strzegom–Sobótka granitoid massif, Sudetes, Poland) identified spinel crystals within a marble interlayer contained in hornfels. Spinel occurs in the form of perfect octahedrons of violet color. The crystals reach a size of up to 2 mm, but typically are much smaller. The hornfels zone with a calcsilicate rock and a marble inlayer is about a dozen meters thick and most probably comes from the metamorphic cover of the Strzegom batholith. Semi-quantitative analyses of spinel were performed. In addition, chondrodite-like or monticellite-like minerals and vesuvianite have been found together with the spinel.

Opis:
During exploitation of serpentinite in the Nasławice quarry (SW Poland) a nephritic zone has been identified. Nephrite occurs in association with light in color rock, similar to rodingite, composed almost entirely of garnet. These rocks form oval bodies in serpentinites. Their maximal length is 7 m and height is 3.5 m. Nephrite appears in the contact zone of one of such bodies. In the upper contact zone nephrite is 10-15 cm thick and in the west side of the rodingite body reaches 40-50 cm. It is possible to distinguish varieties of nephrite from the Nasławice quarry which differ according to color, fabric and mineral composition. Nephrite from Nasławice is hard and reveals splintery fracture. Nephrite is mainly composed of actinolite, which forms fine- grained aggregates (length of fibres ca 100 um) arranged chaotically. Additional minerals also occur such as chromite, garnet enriched in Cr and pyroxene. Microscopic examination reveals that nephrite has massive, fibrous texture. With regard to gemmological properties, three varieties of nephrite have been identified: 1) Homogenous green nephrite with a small amount of chromite inclusions, which cover no more than 5% of surface of sliced samples; 2) Spotted nephrite-with numerous dark spots on a green background; it happens occasionally, that this variety of nephrite changes into serpentinite; 3) Patchy nephrite- characterized by the presence of emerald-green, elongated spots of actinolite (often with grains of chromite inside) on a white background; some fragments contain veins of fibrous serpentine with cat’s eye effect; this seems to be the most interesting sort of nephrite from Nasławice. Based on preliminary technological studies it can be concluded, that nephrite from Nasławice has not only a fine color and interesting texture, visible in sliced samples, but it is also easy for polishing. On polished surfaces nephrite shows fine oily luster. Unfortunately, examples found today are strongly cracked because of the explosive method of serpentinite exploitation used in the Nasławice quarry. The zone of nephrite occurrence is associated with the course of veins of leucocratic rock which extends over a distance of ca 5 km between Nasławice and Jordanów Sląski.

Opis:
Ślęża Massif is an isolated group of hills, surrounded by plains, located on the Sudetic Foreland with the main tops of Ślęża and Radunia. This mesoregion covers an area composed of two structural units: Sudetic Ophiolite and Strzegom-Sobótka Granite Pluton. The present relief of the Ślęża Massif was formed mainly during the Pleistocene glaciations. This article presents the results of landslide observations made in selected locations on the Ślęża Massif. Scientific works were carried out on the south-western, southern and eastern slopes of Ślęża (composed of gabbros), as well as on the northern slopes of Radunia (serpentinites). This area is the place of occurrence of specific morphological forms with research history abundant in various concepts (among others: moraines of the Scandinavian ice sheet, congelifluction tongues, debris flows, fossil rockglaciers and landslides). Author's research, basedon field works and digital terrain model analysis, revealsthat15 inactive landslides exist at these locations. The forms are characterized by various morphometric parameters and different types of colluvial mass movements. Probably, they emerged as a result of late Pleistocene and early Holocene climate changes. Author's conclusions partially confirm some observations and interpretations stated by Horwath in 1981 and by Traczyk and Kasprzak in 2014. Due to plenty of landslide evidence, the views about relict rock glaciers and other conceptions should be defined as incorrect. The forms require further detailed studies.

Unique grain and nest-like accumulations of REE (La, Ce and Nd) nanoforms and precious (gold, platinum) elements were described from the Suwalki Anorthosite Massif (SAM). The dimensions of these forms vary from 15 to 175 p.m in diameter in Ni and Co sulphides, reaching 450 p.m in diameter in Cu sulphides. In the hydrothermally modified ore mineralization, separate small dispersed minerals of Te are visible. Numerous small inclusions of Te-minerals (0.4-0.7 mass %) were identified in hydrothermal Fe-Cu-Co-Ni sulphides, especially in millerite. They are grouped in smallforms that are elongated directly along the flow of hot solutions, 2-4 pm in size of a single inclusion. New results of polymetallic and precious metal sulphides together with dispersed REE mineralization may increase an economic value of the documented Fe-Ti-V deposits within the SAM.

Opis:
This article presents the results of rock hardness tests conducted in the Ślęża Massif to decipher the relationships between the geological structure and relief. It has been shown that all rock types of the massif represent similar mechanical strength. The highest mean strength was found in granite of the western slopes and the foothills of Mt. Ślęża, whereas the lowest strength is typical of gabbro from the central part of the massif, its summit and the eastern and southern slopes. Thus, the traditional concept emphasizing gabbro as being the most resistant rock has not been confirmed. There is also no evidence of higher strength of rocks within the massif, as compared to those in most of its surroundings. Variable mechanical strength is probably responsible for slope mesorelief (mid-slope benches and ridge lines), yet the hypothesis that the resistance of gabbro changes perpendicularly to the contact with granitoid intrusion has not received support. Higher mean Schmidt hammer rebound values and lower standard deviation occurring below 450 m a.s.l. are interpreted as a result of interaction between the structural factor and glacial exaration during the Odra Glaciation.

Opis:
The structure and evolution of the Polish part of the Sudetes is reviewed on the basis of published data and interpretations. The Sudetic segment of the Variscides and its adjacent areas were subjected to multi-stage accretion during successive collisional events that followed closure of different segments of the Rheic Ocean. Early Variscan deformations culminated in the Late Devonian due to docking of the Armorican terrane assemblage to the southern margin of Laurussia. The Variscan orogenic activity continued into the Carboniferous and was associated with a new collision and intense folding and thrusting, followed by abundant magmatism, gravitational collapse and resulting exhumation of deeply buried metamorphic complexes as well as by inversion of the foreland basin. In the Sudetes, Variscan tectonostratigraphic units are tectonically juxtaposed and often bear record of contrasting exhumation/cooling paths, constrained by palaeontological and geochronological data. This provides evidence for the presence of allochthonous units, of partly cryptic tectonic sutures and an of overall collage-type tectonics of that area. The main lithostratigraphical components distinguished within the Sudetes are: 1) non-metamorphic to metamorphosed Neoproterozoic igneous suites accompanied by volcano-sedimentary successions, 2) Late Cambrian granitoids gneissified during the Variscan orogeny, 3) variously metamorphosed Ordovician through Devonian volcano-sedimentary successions deposited in pre-orogenic extensional basins, 4) dismembered fragments of a Late Silurian ophiolitic complex, 5) Devonian to Lower Carboniferous sedimentary successions of a passive continental margin, 6) Carboniferous granitoids, and 7) clastic sediments of Devonian and/or Early Carboniferous intramontane basins. All these components are assembled to form part of the internal Variscan orogenic zone largely exposed within the area of the Bohemian Massif. A three-partite subdivision of the Sudetes proposed here reflects different timing of deformation and exhumation of the respective segments. The Central, West and East Sudetes were deformed and amalgamated during the Middle/Late Devonian, at the turn of the Devonian and Carboniferous and during Early Carboniferous, respectively. Problems in extending the classical tectonostratigraphic zonation of the Variscides into the Sudetes are explained as due to activity of Late Palaeozoic strike-slip faults and shear zones, disrupting and dispersing the initially more simply distributed tectonostratigraphic units into the present-day structural mosaic.

The main relief features of the Lublin Upland (sensu Jahn, 1956) and Roztocze were formed during the early and middle Cenozoic stages of the Meta-Carpathian Ridge morphogenesis. They are clearly conditioned by the structure of the Upper Cretaceous-Palaeogene complex of the marginal part of the East European Craton. The following factors were of fundamental significance for the relief development in the study area: 1) Alpine and modern tectonic activity, which conditioned the horst nature of some morphostructures and the type of fissuring of rock massif, and 2) lithological diversity of the Upper Cretaceous-Palaeogene complex as well as the Miocene and Pliocene deposits, which influenced its strength features.

Opis:
Miocene aged heavy mineral (HMin) alluvial cones and regolith sands above ore-bearing gabbro and amphibolite/diabase rock zone were considered as a prospective metallotect in the area of Devonian ophiolite Ślęża Massif in the Sudets (SW Poland). The available research data from the Sobótka region indicated that the ultramafic gabbro intrusion has an interesting titanium ore enrichment with minerals such as ilmenite and titanomagnetite in the Strzegomiany-Kunów primary ultramafic rocks. The mean composition of ore gabbro samples taken from the surface contained eg; Fe -14.21%, TiO2 - 4.92%, V2O5 - 0,15. Conducted geophysical surveys in the vicinity of the presumed gabbroic rocks at thin Quaternary sediments cover, suggested the variable content ofa primary mineralization, which could be related to the increased content of heavy minerals fractions over the bed in the form of regolith or as a secondary deposit. Titanium minerals such as ilmenite, sphene, were enriched during the oxidation process and created secondary bed, where the concentrates of titanium oxides: rutile, leucoxene or oxidized ilmenite may have a high titanium content as high as 70-90%. Placer HMin sands are at present a major source of titanium deposits worldwide and the largest industrial value due to their large resources, simplicity and purity of exploitation and the ability to yield concentrates of HMin: ilmenite, rutile, pseudobrookite, anatase and leucoxene, sometimes in the company of valuable zircon, monazite or garnet. These deposits in the world are mainly used in metallurgical and chemical industries, eg; the production ofpaints and pigments used in the pharmacy, paper and paint industry. Similar observations have been reported from the region of Spain, Portugal, western Australia andfrom the south of India. Preliminary results of presented study indicate that the Strzegomiany-Kunów region can be considered as prospective not only because of the presence ofprimary titanium mineralization in gabbro, especially in diallage gabbro, amphibolite (diabase) and serpentinite, but also a presence of enriched titanium mineralization in regolith over gabbro and in clastic sediments on the foreland of Ślęża Massif.

Opis:
Zirconium-hafnium rims were discovered and described for the first time within the Suwalki Anorthosite Massif (SAM). They are observed at boundaries of Fe-Ti oxides ilmenite, hematitoilmenite and titanomagnetite with plagioclases. The most frequent forms reach 80-250 μm in length and 4-30 μm in width. These are narrow rims covering even up to 70% ore mineral grains. The most spectacular forms were "blown candle flame” structures. Their average width ranges from 20 to 45 μm and the length exceeds 350 μm in . Chemical composition analysis was carried out on the largest clusters of zircon crystals/rims which show high local enrichment in Hf (0.5-0.8% by weight). The boundaries of these crystals are cracked and blurry. This may suggest their participation in later fluids inflow processes within the rocks. The enrichment in hafnium content in zircon grains, is related to significant reduction in the amount of Th, U and Pb and increased amount- sof Ti and Fe in zircon rims. A large variety of forms and variability of their chemical composition point to a complex physical chemical orgin process.
