Opis:
The Silurian rocks of the Peri-Baltic Depression area (N Poland) were penetrated by 208 boreholes (Fig. 1). Seven new formal lithostratigraphical units were recognized and defined: The Barciany Nodular Limestones Formation (Lower Llandoverian–Rhuddnian, Aeronian), the Pasłęk Bituminous Claystones Formation with the Jantar Bituminous Black Claystone Member (Llandoverian), the Pelplin Green Claystones Formation (Wenlockian–Ludlovian), the Kociewie Claystones and Siltstones Formation with the Reda Marly Siltstones Member (Wenlockian–Ludlovian) and the Puck Marly Claystones and Siltstones Formation (Ludlovian (Ludfordian)–Pridolian). Some of the units have a character of the allostratigraphical ones sensu „North American...”, (1983) because are bordered by the sedimentary or sedimentary-erosional unconformities. The lithology, stratigraphical position, thickness, paleontological data and spatial relation of the particular units are presented (Fig. 2). Their boundaries have been established and stratotypic sections are proposed. Rock sequences of different Formations have been correlated with lithostratigraphical and genetical equivalents of the adjacent regions of Lithuania and Russia (Kaliningrad District) and also with Denmark (Bornholm) and Germany (western part of the Peri-Baltic Depression).

Opis:
Near Poznań, along Warta river valley; erosion process resulted in , the deposits of so called Poznań Formation forming outcrops or are coverd with a relatively thin Quaternary overburden. During routine geological and geotechnical soil testing, in years 1990–2004 carried out in downtownPoznań, in a number of locations organic soils were found in the top part of the poznań clay series. Samples of the organic soil were taken for further testing. One profile (no 8) and samples from other bore holes were palynologically elaborated. Spectra are characterized by the predominance taxa of riparian forest: Alnus, Ulmus, Celtis. Pterocarya. More arid areas were occupied by mesophylous mixed forest with Betula, Fagus, Quercus, Carpinus and shares of conifers, mainly Pinus. The role of swamp-forest with Taxodiaceae-Cupressaceae, Nyssa, Liquidambar, Myrica, typical for Miocene, is not important. Amount of herbaceous plants (except ferns) is low. The pollen of the plants of the temperate climate prevail, whereas thermofilous element is scarce. Age of these deposits was determined as the uppermost Miocene or Mio-Pliocene.

Opis:
Factors controlling concentration and activity ratios of radium isotopes in groundwaters are presented. The influence of lithology, hydrological conditions and chemical composition of groundwaters on radium content is discussed. Based on simple model of adsorption/desorption processes in the rock-water system, the numerical model of evolution of radium isotopes content was developed using Monte-Carlo (MC) method. Assuming that the waters are of similar age and occur under similar conditions, one can state that concentrations of radium isotopes are the highest in Na-Cl type waters, intermediate in waters with predominant carbonate mineralization, and the lowest in sulfate-type waters. In water with predominant Na-Cl mineralization the 226Ra concentration should be higher than that of 228Ra, whereas in sulfate waters this relation is inverse.

Opis:
The southern slope of Łysica Mountain, which is the highest elevation of the Holy Cross Mountains, is comprised of three lithological complexes divided by parallel fault zones. The uppermost part of the succession consists of quartzitic sandstone of the Wiśniówka Formation. The formation is underlain by a complex of sandstone with mudstone interbeds, with black claystone underneath, which is exposed in the upper part of the Glęboczka ravine succession. The strata of the first and the third complexes dip northward, whereas those of the second complex dip southward. In the fault-bound zone between the second and the third complexes, there are concentrations of weathering iron ore. The black claystone, which is lithologically similar to this of the Pepper Mountains Formation, contains a taxonomically rich assemblage of organic-walled microfossils (acritarchs) diagnostic of the Upper Cambrian (Lower Furongian) successions. The new record of microfossils allows determining the age of the succession composing the Łysogóry Mountains for the first time in the history of regional geological investigation.

Opis:
Majority of ca. 90 sites ofsandstone crag groups and individual crags, occurring in the Świętokrzyskie (Holy Cross) Mts. region, represent the following crag-forming lithostratigraphic units: Cambrian Wiśniówka Formation, Devonian Barcza Fm and Zagórze Fm, Triassic Zagnańsk Fm and Krynki Beds, as well as Jurassic Skloby Fm and Ostrowiec Fm. Specific features of these rocks are the occurrence of sandstone series, up to 20 m thick, above more plastic, clayey or heterolithic series, high-energy depositional environments, and siliceous composition. The crag-forming sandstones differ in the amount of siliceous cement: from strongly cemented Paleozoic quartzitic sandstones to porous Mesozoic sandstones with poor cement, which determines diverse mechanical properties. Strongly cemented Paleozoic rocks display high rock strength and abrasion resistance, while porous and theoretically friable Mesozoic sandstones are characterised by high grain packing due to compaction. Regarding the principal role of gravitational disinte¬gration of rock massifs under the periglacial conditions in the Pleistocene, other factors constraining the crag formation and shaping are the tectonic situation of rocks (orientation of strata and joints), adequate joint spacing, and bed thickness. The interrelations between lithological and structural features of crag-forming sandstones and tectonics, conditioning erosion and weathering rates are specific for particular types of these sandstones.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the field research using a new, prototypical geoelectrical equip-ment, that were developed for the soil resistance (Borowczyk &Porzeżyński, 2003). These studies were carried out in Plecewice near Sochaczew, where an open pit with varved clays is situated. Lithological changeability of varved clays was determined by the author through detailed laboratory testing. Then the results of research were compared with those derived from the new geoelectrical equipment tests and were related to varve thickness qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the soils in the vertical profile with the novel method was demonstrated. Further, the geological situation of the investigated area is presented in this paper.

Opis:
Intertills sand deposits of the Augustovian, Great and Eemian Interglacials were recognized in eight borehole sections of the Chełmno Lakeland. Wartanian glaciofluvial sediments were also studied. All these deposits are well defined in the area by lithological analyses of granulation, mineral composition of light and heavy fractions, roundness of quartz grains and calcium carbonate content. Their Great and Eemian Interglacial age is evidenced by palynological analyses. Among various lithological features distinguishing the interglacial deposits from glaciofluvial ones the most important are mineral characteristics such as contribution of light and heavy fractions. Quantitative lithological features of the interglacial and glaciofluvial sand deposits resulted from many geologic and sedimentologic factors.
