Opis:
The paper focuses on the problem of water draining from brown coal pits, which has occurred since the 1950s in the Gniezno Lakeland in the western part of central Poland. Threats to hydrogeological systems and related lake systems under conditions of mining-induced drainage near the lakes located in the Powidz Landscape Park (PLP) are indicated. The lowering of water level in the PLP lakes exceeds 5 m, as compared to the pre-mining-induced drainage state. Such a rapid change may cause ecological disaster for these deep-water, healthy lake ecosystems with abundant submerged macrophyte (Charophyte) habitats (Natura 2000 protected area). Considering the regional context, the causes of hydrodynamic pressure leading to degradation of Lake Wilczyńskie and neighbouring, hydrologically connected lakes, are presented. The proposed mitigation actions for improving the ecological state of these lakes are presented in the contexts of (1) water balance assessment, (2) hydrotechnical issues related to the redistribution of water from the Slesiňski Canal (the Warta River - Lake Goplo) through water pipeline transmission, and (3) the accelerating groundwater reclamation of the Jóźwin IIB open mine pit area.

Opis:
Soft water lakes are mostly acid, poor in minerals and have a lot of free CO2 in their water and bottom sediments. So called Lobelia lakes, containing Lobelia dortmanna L., Isoëtes lacustris L., and Littorella uniflora (L.) Ascherson, are a type of soft water lakes. These species are rare in Poland and in Europe mainly because of eutrophication and anthropopression. Lobelia lakes and ecology of isoetids were described in many scientific articles, but their history is poorly recognised. Thus, for some years palaeoecological research has been done in the Tuchola Pinewoods to reveal the time of migration, spreading and development of Lobelia lakes. Pollen analysis and diatom analysis were done for the sediments of lakes: Nierybno, Okoń Duży, Linowskie, Moczadło and Nawionek (Fig. 1). Content of plant remains of Lobelia dortmanna nad Isoëtes lacustris, fossil diatoms and Pediastrum indicates phases of low and high trophy of Lake Nierybno (Fig. 5). The highest trophy was found in the Younger Dryas, in the middle Boreal Period and the oldest time of Subboreal Period. The lowest trophy was observed at the beginning of the Holocene, in the Atlantic Period and in modern times. Low trophy of the lake is related to acid or neutral pH of the water. Reconstruction of the lake history based on diatom analysis shows two main phases of the Nierybno ecosystem existence. In the early stages of the lake’s development it was an eutrophic basin with elevated pH. At the beginning of the Atlantic Period the pH decreased and content of nutrients in the water was reduced. Navicula radiosa, N. leptostriata and N. heimansioides, species typical for Lobelia lakes have been present since then. Generally Lobelia lakes are well preserved in the Tuchola Pinewoods due to low anthropopression and conservation activity of the Tuchola Pinewoods National Park and the Zaborski Landscape Park.

Opis:
The Smolensk Lakeland National Park is situated north of Smoleńsk in the NW Russia. Its morphology is associated with the last European ice sheet: glacial erosion and accumulation, glacial water activity, locally with the so-called thermokarst process or karst in the strict sense. The post-glacial morphological depressions are filled with lake waters. The most interesting lakes are: Chistik, Mutnoye, Balshoye and Maloye Striechnoye, Glubokoye, Dolgoye, Krugloye, Pietrovskoye, Bukino, Gorodishche, Svyatec, Sapsho, Polovia, Gniloye, Rytoye, Dgo, Shchuch’ye, Baklanovskoye, Bachovskoye, Vervizhskoye, Pal’tsevskoye and Bieloye. The Smolensk Lakeland National Park is one of a few territories in Europe where the beauty of nature and landscapes dominate the long-standing human presence. Nowadays, there are a few residents, a growing number of patients, seasonal campers and tourists in the park area.

Opis:
The study involved 17 species of freshwater molluscs. The concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Cd andHg) in soft tissues was determinedfor 14 species, while the concentration of heavy metals in shells was determinedfor 16 species. Totally, 110 samples of soft tissue and 119 samples of shells were analysed. The statistical analysis of the qualitative data concerning concentration of metals in shells indicated a clear distinction between snails and bivalves. The only exception is Unio crassus, which was assigned to a three-point cluster together with snails. With respect to snails, this may be because the analysis was performed only on one sample. The results of this study can be significant both for palaeontological research and palaeoenvironmental research. If we have a few shell fragments available, it can be generally concluded, based on geochemical analysis of heavy metals in shells, which shell fragments belong to bivalves and which to snails. It is also possible to assess geochemical conditions of ancient ecosystems. Obviously, the given results are preliminary and they suggest necessity of further research.
