Wieliczka Salt Mine
Opis:
The saltmine in Wieliczka is a mining plant which is unique on the worldwide scale, which has been developing since the Middle Ages until the present times. The high geological complexity of bedrock in the vicinity of the mine, which is associated with the Carpathians orogeny, determines the high level of complexity of local hydrogeological conditions. At present, about 260 l/min of water discharges into the mine, which is considered very high as for a salt mine. 86% of that amount comes from three major inflows, i.e. WVII-16 (from Fornalska II chamber), WVI-32 (from Z-32 chamber) and WVI-6 (from Z-28 chamber). These seepages cause threats to the mine, not only due to their large volumes but also due to high quantities of salt that is leaching from the rock mass. The most troubled area in the Wieliczka salt mine, from the hydrogeological viewpoint, is the northern border, where salt deposits are in contact with strongly dislocated sandstones via a gypsum-clay layer. These sandstone deposits comprise not very productive aquifers that, to some degree, are isolated from one another.

The former gold and silver mine of Breiner, is located in the village of Băiuţ, in the mining area of Băiuţ-Tibleş (Maramureş, Romania). The local polymetallic occurrences are characterized by a rich sulfide (Cu, Pb, Zn sulfides/sulfosalts) and arsenic mineralization. While the primary mineralization is relatively well known, the diverse paragenesis of second- ary mineralization has never been the subject of detailed research. Based on diffraction studies, several species of weathered minerals have been identified, most of which have never been reported in the study area before. The dominant minerals in the mine belong to the melanterite and halotrichite groups. The occurrence of rare phases on a global scale has also been observed - zaherite Al12(SO4)5(OH)26 20H2O, tooeleite Fe6(AS3+O3)4(SO4)(OH)44H2 and wattevilleite - a species with uncertain chemistry, possibly Na2Ca(SO4)24H2O. The formation of these parageneses is related to currently occurring weathering processes of primary ore mineralization that undergoes decomposition under low pH conditions.

The article discusses the results of the work on the variability of water mineralization in the Basal Limestone, inflowing to the excavations of the KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. Rudna mine. The spatial variability of the total water mineralization and concentrations ofparticular ions (Na+, Cl-, SO2-, Ca2+ and Mg2+) were analyzed. It has been observed that the mineralization of waters from the Basal Limestone is from 12 to 256 g/dm3 with a mineralization gradient at 43.34 g/dm3/100 m. The waters are of the Na-Cl chemical type. It was found that the lowest concentrations of Na+ and Cl- characterize the southern part of the study area. Concentrations of these ions increase in the northern part of the Rudna mine, where the lowest content of sulphate ions and the highest concentrations of Ca2+ ion were observed. Based on selected, most commonly used hydrochemical indexes, an attempt was made to determine the origin of the major ions.

Opis:
The article presents the results of monitoring of landslides related to opencast mining. The landslides formed on the slopes of an artificial water reservoir in the Adamów open-cast lignite mine. The photogrammetric method was used for monitoring. The study of landslide activity was performed on the basis of six photogrammetric surveys made with the DJI Phantom 4 Advanced UAV. Changes in the landslide extent and vertical displacements were determined in five measurement periods. For four periods, differential digital terrain models were made and the volume of displaced earth masses was calculated. The future extent of the landslide was determined on the basis of cracks visible in high-resolution optical photos. The research has shown that UAVs equipped with an optical camera are very useful in monitoring the stability of slopes of post-mining water reservoirs. The applied method provided detailed data on the size of displacements without compromising on safety of people involved in field surveys.

The paper presents changes in groundwater chemistry of Triassic aquifer after zinc-lead mine flooding. Last stage of liquidation Zn-Pb “Trzebionka” mine has been started in July of 2010. Long lasting drainage caused oxidation of the sulphide minerals in hosted rocks of Zn-Pb deposits. Flushing of the extended unsaturated zone led to dissolving of weathering products. Those complicated processes caused significant increase in sulphates concentrations Prediction of consequence of mine flooding for water chemical composition is possible due to long term observation of the water quality in the “Trzebionka” zinc-lead ore. Currently water quality of Triassic aquifer is deteriorate.

The Pomorzany mine, currently the only one Zn-Pb mine in Poland and one of the largest underground mines of this type worldwide (output 2.5 Mt/y) exceeded 40 years of operation on the MV-type deposit. In 1960, the first geological report on its resources based on drillings was issued. Data from this long period were used to analyse the resource management and evolution of reserve tonnage and quality due to changes in the economic and technical viability as well as to qualify different categories of mine reserves and losses due to the ongoing operation. The mine project was based on geological resource of 97.6 Mt ore averaging 4.12% Zn and 1.42% Pb. Resources extracted with documented low losses and those remaining in situ amount to 92.7 Mt averaging 4.18% Zn and 1.27% Pb. These figures indicate the high accuracy of the exploration results and cost-effective management of resources. The observed trend of ore reserve increase over the last decade gives hope of delimiting at least 3 Mt over the next three years. The mine, which was planned for a 30-year life cycle, has sufficient reserves until 2016, and under favourable market conditions, may extend its life up to 2018.

The paper presents the study of chloride concentrations in the Vistula river in Krakow, performed from 1990'. Growth of black coal mining in the Upper Silesia and the D¹browa Basin had significant impact for water quality in the Vistula river. After Second World War, year by year, the chloride concentration was being raised, in the end of 1970' reached 30g/l. Saline mine water discharge led to change hydrochemical water type from Ca–HCO3 to Na–Cl. Due to Polish Environment Law, concentrations of that ion was reduced, mostly to value below 1g/dm3. The water of the Vistula river has been sampled almost every week. The studies showed variability of chloride concentrations. Rate of water salinity depend on amount of the mine water discharge and water flow in the Vistula river. No cooperation between particular mines contributed to stochastic, variable salinity level.

Opis:
The rock burst that occurred on November 29, 2016, in the "Rudna” copper mine has had tragic consequences. Eight miners were killed in the heavy machinery compartment located in the safest area of the safety pillar. This is not the first accident of its kind. It was caused by the collapse of the overlying anhydrite layer that is approximately 200 m thick in this region. The mining operation is based on the room and pillar system that results in stress accumulation within the anhydrite layer, which, at some time, causes a rock burst. The best method to prevent this phenomenon is the use of backfill. The entire mined surface of a deposit is greater than 100 square kilometres. Such amounts of sands are not stored within the mines. It is therefore necessary to carry out operations to adapt more than 1 billion tonnes of tailings accumulated in the "Żelazny Most” reservoir to the needs of backfilling of mine workings. The widespread use of hardened backfill should prevent such great rock bursts in copper mines.

opencast lignite mine
Opis:
Landslides in Polish opencast lignite mines are a serious problem for the efficiency of exploitation. They can also pose a threat to adjacent areas and the environment, and in some cases even jeopardize the continuity of lignite supplies to power plants. Such phenomena are associated with a number of factors, the most important of which are the geological engineering structure, groundwater conditions, unfavourable strength parameters of clayey soils and their usually relatively steep slopes. Counteracting such a phenomena, caused by mining activity, is usually difficult because of large size of landslides and the depth of exploitation reaching in some cases over 300 m. The paper presents the first application of on-line monitoring in a Polish opencast lignite mine. Performed in the Bełchatów Mine, in situ monitoring was complemented by satellite radar interferometry (PSI), LiDAR airborne laser scanning, and terrestrial laser scanning. Research within the RFCS EU SLOPES project “Smarter Lignite Open Pit Engineering Solutions” was performed by an international consortium from six European countries. In Poland, the research was located mainly on the western slope of the Bełchatów Field. In this area, in the Polish open pit lignite mine, on-line inclinometer, and a pore pressure monitoring system were the first located at the levels of+42 : -58 m a.s.l. Geological engineering investigations included 100 m depth core drilling, index laboratory tests, IL oedometer tests, CIU, CID triaxial tests, and numerical modelling. The total amount of in situ displacement, during the period December 2016-July 2019, reached 290 mm. The largest displacements up to 250 mm were recorded: to a depth of 45 m in the direction of slope inclination, and smaller ones up to 50 mm to a depth of 72.5 m. The displacements were accompanied by a decre ase in pore pressure values by more than 200 kPa. In other parts of the mine and adjacent areas, the satellite radar interferometry detected displacements up to 60 mm/year on the outer slopes of the Szczerców dump. It also allowed identification of the landslide hazard in other areas. Data obtained from in-situ monitoring and laboratory tests on the western slope of the Bełchatów Field were included in numerical modelling using the shear strength reduction method and the limit equilibrium method. This should allow helping for better recognition and warning of the existing hazards in the investigated area.

Landscape alteration is generally one of the most significant impacts caused by surface mining and quarrying, particularly when the excavation activities are located within environmentally sensitive areas. The paper describes the results of two different methods of visual impact assessment applied to a number of case studies in Małopolska. The application involves areas with significant landscape values and places of weekend, summer and winter holidays for many people living in the Silesian and Kraków urban-industrial agglomerations. One of the two methods refers to the EC decision 272/02, which establishes ecological criteria for the award of the Community eco-label for hard floor-coverings. The second method is based on the application of a visual impact indicator (Lvi) in which two objective aspects of landscape alteration are included: the extent of the visible excavation and its chromatic contrast with the surroundings. The results of the two methods are compared and discussed for each of the case studies considered.

Salt mining at the Wieliczka mine that had lasted over a period of 700 years came to a stop on 30 June 1996. Currently the mine represents an object of culture, a museum, and also a balneotherapeutic facility. It is the place of birth of the so called subterraneotherapy, i.e., an innovative method of curing that utilizes a specific microclimate in underground chambers of inoperative salt workings. The method was finally developed by Professor Mieczysław Skulimowski, who revived the efforts of a 19th century mine physician Feliks Boczkowski. The salt mine has currently obtained a spa status, and its mineral waters (brines) from the outflows No’s W-VII-16 and W-VI-32 have been recognized as therapeutic ones. The most commonly treated are the patients with non-infectious problems of upper and lower respiratory tracts. Since November 2014 the Spa of the Wieliczka Salt Mine has also a graduation tower in the Kinga Park. In these tower is used the brine from the flow-VII-16 with a depth of 250 m. It is water Cl-Na type and 68.9 g/dm3 mineralization. The yield of salt water from this flow is 9 m3/h.

The article presents the geological features of rarely described ferruginous nickel ores in carbonate rocks. They are exploited mostly in central Greece, giving about 1% of world production. Geochemical associations of laterite-derived nickel ores and bauxites occurring in carbonate formations of similar age in the not distant area are presented. The deposits formed in several stages starting with the lateritic alteration of nearby serpentinite and redeposition of water-suspended saprolite into karstic forms of Jurassic limestones. Ferruginous clayey material was sealed by transgressive Cenomanian marly sediments and was subject to further transformations in the vadose zone of the uplifted rock massive. Mining geology, environmental and economic aspects of exploitation are analysed. Finally, guidelines for the land use in post-mining areas are provided.

This paper presents an analysis of the groundwater inflow into the Polkowice mining area. It is a mining area where the highest inflow into the mine from the whole Legnica-Glogów Copper District can be observed. In the multi-aquifer formation system, which occurs in the study area, a significant role is played by: Paleogene and Neogene, Triassic and Permian aquifers. The principal objective was to determine the discharging groundwater resources in deep aquifers in relation to the current hydrogeological conditions observed in the mine. The results helped to describe problems and possibilities of high frequency measurements in mine workings and to give some clues to the improvement of measurement methodology. This research was based on direct measurements, analysis of collecting data, and a comparison with existing data regarding the inflow into the mine workings.
