Opis:
The present article concerns a characteristics of enigmatic encrusting organisms of the order Microconchida (microconchids), similar to polychaetes of the genus Spirorbis, as well as a description of their finds from the Upper Carboniferous of the Upper Silesia region, southern Poland. The microconchids described here may represent the genus Microconchus. Most of the individuals encrust terrestrial flora and bivalve shells, and thus they certainly inhabited freshwater or, at most, brackish water environment. Similarly as the Recent polychaetes of the genus Spirorbis, the microconchids described here occur in association composed of both adult and juvenile individuals. The juveniles, however, dominate, what may indicate they have died due to some stress conditions (high rate of deposition and/or low oxygen content in the water). The microconchids are poorly-preserved. The original calcitic mineralogy of their tubes was replaced by phases similar to lead sulfide and dolomite.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to present the use of archival welllogs for quantitative determination of organic matter (TOC wt.% ). The study was conducted in the lower Palaeozoic rocks of the Baltic Basin and Podlasie-Lublin Basin as well as in the Carboniferous rocks of the Fore-Sudetic Homocline basement. In many wells, sonic logging has not been run at all or run to a limited extent. In such cases, a neural network method was used to estimate the interval time. Then, continuous analysis was carried out for quantitative determination of organic matter content (TOC) using the CARBOLOG method. Finally, well log interpretation was performed for six wells in the Podlasie-Lublin Basin, five wells in the Baltic Basin, and five wells in the Fore-Sudetic Homocline basement. This article presents examples of results obtained for two wells.

Opis:
In the Lublin region Carboniferous sandstones are represented by subarkosic, quartz and sublithic, occasionally arkosic arenites and wackes. These rocks are characterized by porosity (primary and secondary) ranging from 0 to 22.43% and permeability from 0 to over 1000 mD. Two diagenetic processes, that is compaction and cementation, were primarily responsible for reduction of porosity in these sandstones. The compaction decreased porosity at about 50%, while the cementation at 30%. Quartz, kaolinite and carbonates and locally fibrous illite are the most common cements here. Dissolution is also important as a diagenetic process responsible for development of secondary porosity. Good porosity of the bulk of Carboniferous sandstones is due to precipitation of early overgrowth cements (quartz, Fe-chlorite and siderite), which stopped the mechanical compaction, and dissolution of feldspar grains and authigenic quartz leading to origin of secondary porosity. The processes of mechanical compaction and advanced quartz and carbonate cementation (mainly of the ankerite and Fe-calcite type) as well as crystallization of fibrous illite were the major factors responsible for reduction of porosity in some sandstones. The results of the studies on pore space indicate good reservoir properties of sandstones of the Lublin and Dęblin formations as well as some parts of the Terebin formation. The sandstones from the Huczwa formation and a part of the Terebin formation belong to rocks characterized by low petrophysical parameters. Comparisons of sandstones formed in different environments have shown that best reservoir conditions are displayed by these formed in river channel and delta bottom ennvironments. During diagenesis, the Carboniferous deposits remained under influence of the maximum temperature of about 120oC, but locally the temperatures could have been even higher. Maximum temperatures were reached by the Carboniferous deposits at the end of Carboniferous whereas diagenetic proccesses were active until early Permian. The results of studies on diagenesis of these rocks, projected onto the thermal-erosional model, point to the Variscan overheating.

Opis:
The purpose of the study was petrographic-mineralogical analysis of volcaniclastic rocks occurring in the Lublin Basin, within the Kłodnica Member (Tournaisian, Visean), in seven boreholes. Its results were linked with the results of sedimentological and sequence stratigraphy studies to reconstruct the genesis of the sediments, as well as spatial and age relationships. Fine and coarse ash tuffs were identified, whose composition indicates acidic and alkaline volcanism. Accompanying volcaniclastic conglomerates and sandstones were formed mainly in the Tournaisian, before volcanic activity began. These sediments fill incised valleys, and belong to the oldest Carboniferous sedimentary filling of the Lublin Basin.

Opis:
The paper presents results of detailed research of pore space in the Upper Carboniferous and Lower Permian sandstones and those from the Upper Carboniferous/Lower Permian transitional section. This is followed by a preliminary assessment of reservoir properties against the background of diagenetic processes. The samples were collected from 11 boreholes. The research included standard petrological investigations supported by a digital image analysis of thin sections. Compaction and cementation were the main processes reducing porosity in all the sandstones. Cementation locally reduced primary porosity to approximately 80%. Compaction was much less active. The sandstones are characterized by primary and secondary porosity. Secondary intergranular as well as intercrystalline and intracrystalline porosity developed as a result of diagenetic dissolution of feldspar grains and cements. Variability of petrophysical parameters can be a result, among others, of lithological and facies development. Upper Carboniferous and Upper Carboniferous/Lower Permian sandstones show the best reservoir properties. Lower Permian sandstones are characterized by variable properties.

Opis:
The study deals with clay-silt shales occurring in the lower Palaeozoic basin at the western slope of the East European Craton, and sandstones known from the Carboniferous Basin of SW Poland (basement of theFore-SudeticHomocline).The clay groundmass of the shales consistslargely of illite, and the silt fraction is made up of quartz with a variable admixture of feldspars. Quartz and carbonate cements are common, while pyrite, kaolinite and phosphate cements are rare. The clay groundmass reveals microporosity in the form of microchannels paralleling illite plates, and visible with in mica packets. Carboniferous sandstones are represented mostly by sublithic or subarkosic wackes and rarely by lithic, sublithic or subarkosic arenites. The pore space between sand grains is completely filled by clayey matrix. Both porosity and permeability are very low in the sandstones.

Opis:
Origin of natural gas of Gorzysław, Białogard and Daszewo fields from Lower and Upper Carboniferous, and Rotliegend reservoirs on the Baltic part of the Western Pomerania was characterized by means of geochemical methods. The results of molecular analyses as well as stable carbon isotope analyses of methane, ethane, propane and carbon dioxide, stable hydrogen isotope analyses of methane and stable nitrogen isotope analyses of gaseous nitrogen enabled the determination of gas origin. Gaseous hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide originated from thermogenic processes from type III kerogen with small component of type II kerogen. At least two phases of gas generation took place: the first one at the stage of 0.6 to 0.8%, and the other one at the stage of 1.4 to 1.8% maturity of source rocks in the vitrinite reflectance scale. Gaseous hydrocarbons generated from source rocks within the Upper Carboniferous (Wesphalian) and Lower Carboniferous (Visean) strata. Nitrogen probably originated during thermocatalytic processes of organic matter transformation and partly in abiogenic processes.

Opis:
Intense program of shale gas prospecting in the territory of Poland is currently on going. Among the steps towards better examination of dispersed organic matter (DOM) in clastic Carboniferous rocks of the basement of the Fore-Sudetic Homocline are petrologic studies. The paper provides data on the DOM composition, kerogen type determination, and identification of thermal maturity degree of Carboniferous rocks in the basement of the Fore-Sudetic Homocline. In general, organic matter from the Carboniferous rocks is represented only by vitrinite and inertinite. Such composition of DOM permits to define it as humic organic matter typical for kerogen type III. Carboniferous rocks display a high and very high degree of thermal maturity, expressed by a wide range of vitrinite reflectance values (from below 1.50% to above 5.50%).

Studies that have recently been carried out by the Polish Geological Survey aim at, among others, deepening and supplementing the knowledge of unconventional hydrocarbon systems in Poland, including petroleum systems of the lower Palaeozoic in the Polish part of the East European Craton and of the Carboniferous in the South-Western Poland. The article presents the main principles and objectives of the research and the results of the project titled “Identification of prospective zones for unconventional hydrocarbon accumulations in Poland, stageI”,which is the only project that uses a wide range of recently conducted regional geology research and laboratory analyses, integrated with geological information derived from newly drilled boreholes. Geological constraints for the occurrence of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits in the Cambrian, Ordovician Silurian and Carboniferous rocks are presented. What is emphasized is the need to continue the work and to extend it to new research directions aimed at petroleum system modelling (e.g.burial history and analysis of hydrocarbon generation), and the need to refine and clarify some of the results obtained, supplementing them with an analysis of the latest data from newly drilled boreholes.

Opis:
The paper presents the characteristics of prospective zones identified for the first time within the lower Palaeozoic shale formations occurring in the Baltic-Podlasie-Lublin Basin and within the Carboniferous shale, sandstone, and mixed shale-sandstone complexes (the so-called hybrid complexes) in the basin of south-western Poland. The lateral and vertical ranges of these zones are determined based on specific criteria using the results of various research methods and analyses, i.e.: stratigraphic, sedimentological, mineralogical, petrological and geochemical of organic matter, petrographic and petrophysical, including interpretation of well logs. Archived geological materials and those coming from the boreholes drilled recently in the concession areas were also used. Four prospective zones have been distinguished in the lower Palaeozoic of the so-called shale belt: SP1, SP2, SP3 and SP4. The most prospective area for the occurrence of unconventional hydrocarbon deposits in shale formations is the Baltic region – the Łeba Elevation, where there are all four perspective zones, only partially covering the range of potentially prospective formations. In each of these zones, both liquid and gas hydrocarbons can be expected in this area. Due to the low percentage of organic matter, the lowest hydrocarbon generation potential is attributed to the Lublin region. However, the low values of this parameter are compensated by other parameters, i.e. the considerable thickness and lateral extent of zone SP4 corresponding partly to the Pelplin Formation. In the Carboniferous rocks of south-western Poland, seven prospective zones have been distinguished in four borehole sections. Four of them are “tight” zones in compact sandstones, while the other three zones represent a hybrid type in complexes with mixed lithology. No prospective zones have been defined in complexes with homogeneous shale lithologies. Determination of lateral extents of the identified zones has not been possible due to the scarcity of data on the geological structure and stratigraphy of the Carboniferous succession in the study area
