Opis:
Several decades ago during exploration for additional resources of tap water a saline water deposit (Cl-Na, J, Fe, B type) has been discovered in the area of Rzeszów hospital park. Nowadays this water is exploited for balneological purposes. In the frame-work of this study for the first time the following stable isotopes: (δ18 i δD, δ13C, δ37Cl) and radiocarbon were determined in order to elucidate the origin of water, its mineralization and quality. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope data leads to conclusion that these waters were formed in a warm pre-Pleistocene period or they are mixture of Miocene seawater with Pleistocene infiltration waters. Carbon isotopic composition (b13= –8.65‰) of bicarbonate is characteristic for deep pore waters occurring in sedimentary rocks, whereas distinctly positive and negative δ37 Cl value rather excludes origin of chlorine ion from an open sea basin. Absence of radiocarbon (in Rzeszów well) indicates no admixture of recent infiltration waters, hence these waters are well preserved from anthropogenic pollution. This is further confirmed by very low concentration of nitrate.

Opis:
Origin of natural gas of Gorzysław, Białogard and Daszewo fields from Lower and Upper Carboniferous, and Rotliegend reservoirs on the Baltic part of the Western Pomerania was characterized by means of geochemical methods. The results of molecular analyses as well as stable carbon isotope analyses of methane, ethane, propane and carbon dioxide, stable hydrogen isotope analyses of methane and stable nitrogen isotope analyses of gaseous nitrogen enabled the determination of gas origin. Gaseous hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide originated from thermogenic processes from type III kerogen with small component of type II kerogen. At least two phases of gas generation took place: the first one at the stage of 0.6 to 0.8%, and the other one at the stage of 1.4 to 1.8% maturity of source rocks in the vitrinite reflectance scale. Gaseous hydrocarbons generated from source rocks within the Upper Carboniferous (Wesphalian) and Lower Carboniferous (Visean) strata. Nitrogen probably originated during thermocatalytic processes of organic matter transformation and partly in abiogenic processes.

Opis:
In the autochthonous Upper Badenian and Lower Sarmatian strata of the Carpathian Foredeep in the Rzeszów area the total organic carbon (TOC) contents vary from 0.02 to 1.26 wt. %(average 0.64 wt. %). Geochemical studies on the dispersed organic matter demonstrated the presence of gas-prone type III (humic) kerogen with small admixtures of algal type II kerogen. At depths less than 2,500 metres the organic matter is immature, thus microbial processes predominated. Methane concentration in natural gases accumulated within Miocene strata usually exceeded 94 vol. %and was generated by microbial reduction of carbon dioxide. Microbial methane was generated mainly during deposition of autochthonous Miocene sediments, but it is possible that this process continues today on a small scale. Higher gaseous hydrocarbons (mainly ethane and propane), which are usually minor constituents (concentrations less than 0.4 vol. %), were generated during diagenetic processes and at the initial stage of the low-temperature thermogenic processes. The slight changes in the geochemical indices of dispersed organic matter and isotope ratios of natural gases with depth are evidence of the homogeneity of deposition of humic organic matter in shallow marine basin during the Late Badenian and the Early Sarmatian and the fact that similar gas generation conditions can be found in the Miocene sequence. Generation and accumulation of microbial methane and the formation and charging multiple stacked reservoirs within the autochthonous Miocene strata, e.g., Palikówka, Jasionka, Stobierna and Terliczka deposits, was facilitated by rhythmic and cyclic deposition of clays and sands and their very high sedimentation rate.

Opis:
Ongoing magnetostratigraphic and geochemical studies (including major and trace element geochemistry and stable isotopes of C, N, O) in the Canadian Rocky Mountains are providing insight into the paleoenvironmental changes of the mid-Frasnian punctata Event, a prominent marine geochemical perturbation. The data is evaluated with 1) a regional sequence stratigraphic perspective and 2) within the context of a rapidly changing Late Devonian world, characterized by numerous sedimentological and faunal perturbations leading up to the eventual Frasnian-Fammenian (F/F) mass extinction. Proxies for bottom water paleoredox conditions (Mo, V, U), oceanic primary productivity (δ13Corg, δ15Nbulku, Cu, Ni, Ba), changes in detrital input (Si, Al, K, Ti, Zr), and magnetic susceptibility display similar trends, indicating that these proxies and MS variations are inherently linked. The observed excursions suggest that changes in detrital input were the main driver of a bioproductivity increase. Elevated organic matter export from the photic zone likely led to the deposition and later preservation of organic-carbon rich facies under facilitated conditions of bottom water suboxia-anoxia. These geochemical trends were likely influenced by eustatic sea level change, but may have been enhanced by pulses of coincident orogenic activity and pulses of terrestrial afforestation. The rise and expansion of the first true forests is thought to have drastically altered nutrient fluxes to the oceans via increases in pedogenesis and the expansion of a mature soil profile. Our work is intended to complement the growing body of research aimed at elucidating the causes and understanding the effects of terrestrial and marine events of the P. punctata biozone and, more broadly, at understanding the Earth-system changes of the Late Devonian leading up to the F/F boundary.

Opis:
Fluid inclusions in halite from Miocene rock salt of the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin in locations where evaporites overlie oil and gas reservoir rocks are characterized by their high methane content and the presence of oil droplets in some of them. They are thus similar to fluid inclusions reported from geochemical aureoles around oil and gas accumulations in the Zechstein (Upper Permian) of western Poland (Kovalevych et al., 2008). Geochemical analyses of bitumen in bulk samples of rock salt (including content and distribution of n-alkanes and isoprenoids, carbon isotope ratios) suggest a varied origin: hydrocarbon extracted from halite from boreholes located in proximity (proved or assumed) of oil and gas deposits (Lopushna-7, Grynivka-525) are probably related to organic material dispersed within the rock salt itself, and those from the barren areas (Verkhniy Strutyn-29) are most probably cogenetic with oil accumulated in the deposits of the Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe.
