Opis:
Lake sediments of the Mazovian Interglacial were found in boreholes Kasyldów and Wola Okrzejska 48, and deposits of the Eemian Interglacial were discovered in Wola Okrzejska 49 and Szczepaniec bore-holes. The pollen succession recorded in the lacustrine sediments in the pro-files Kasyldów and Wola Okrzejska 48 is characteristic for the Mazovian Interglacial, and those from the profiles Wola Okrzejska 49 and Szczepaniec typical for the Eemian Interglacial. The biogenic sediments in the Kasyldów and Wola Okrzejska (48) were accumulated in lakes, formed after meltdown of the Sanian 2 (Wilgian) ice-sheet. These sites are located within the Mazovian Lakeland, in the south-east of the Żelechów Upland. The glacial horizon of the Sanian 2 (Wilgian) Glaciation occurs under Mazovian sediments. The fluvioglacial deposits of the Wartanian Glaciation cover the lacustrine sediments. The Eemian sites at Wola Okrzejska 49 and Szczepaniec are located in the Okrzejka River valley, which was formed after the Wartanian Glaciation. The silts of the Wartanian Glaciation occur below Eemian deposits. The sands of the Vistulian Glaciation and peats of the Holocene cover the lacustine deposits of the Eemian Interglacial. These sites are important for stratigraphy of sediments, which fill the Okrzejka, Wilga and Mała Bystrzyca valleys.

Eastern Poland is a region, where a lot of sites with detailed palynological records of the Mazovian (Holsteinian) Interglacial are located. The pollen succession of this interglacial in Eastern Poland has specific features: high proportions of Pterocarya pollen, the occurrence of Parrotia pollen and a distinct share of pollen of other exotic taxa, among others: Juglans, Ilex, Celtis, Buxus and Vitis. Palynological studies reveal variability proportions of Taxus in the Ma IV Taxus-Picea-Alnus zone. The presence of intra-interglacial cooling is distinct in sediments of this age.

Gajec [Rze-1] borehole was drilled for needs of detailed geological mapping of Poland at the scale 1 : 50 000 (sheet Rzepin ). A deep tunnel valley was recognized in this borehole. It was eroded to 120 m below a see level in the Lower Miocene sediments. The tunnel was filled with 85 m thick series of sands, mud and dusty till deposited during the San Glaciation [the Elsterian Glaciation]. The sediments from the depth interval of 67,9 m - 57,1 m have been examined by palinological analysis. The data obtained indicate that the pollen succession from the Gajec section has features characteristic of the Mazovian [Holsteinian] pollen succession. These features are the high proportion of coniferous trees [Pinus, Picea, Taxus, Abies], and the association of Alnus with Picea and Carpinus with Abies, Quercus and Corylus as well the most abundant thermophilous elements. Warmth-demanding taxa are represented by pollen of Pterocarya, Celtis, Juglans, Buxus, Ilex aquifolium and Vitis.

The borehole at Radówek (Łagów Lakeland, western Poland) was made during cartographic works for the Detailed Geological Map of Poland in 1 : 50 000 scale (sheet Słubice upon Odra). Deposits of 200 m thickness were drilled. Till and lacustrine — boggy sediments have been investigated by lithopetrographical investiga-tions and by pollen analysis. This series consists of laminated gyttja with clayey laminas with shells of mollusks and floral detritus and a layer of brown-black peat. The profile of the interglacial deposits ended with finely laminated sands with organic substance. According to palynological data, the sediments in the depth 23,30 to 18,75 m belong to the Upper Warthanian Glaciation, the Eemian Interglacial and the Early Vistulian Glaciation. The described sequence lies above a 18,5 m thick layer of till correlated with lithotype till Karolewo and Naratow. This indicates its Wartanian Glaciation age. The sandy till at the top of the profile was assigned to till of Maliniec type recognized in Poznań region that is considered to be of the Early Vistulian deposits.

penultimate interglacial (7 OIS)
Opis:
Based on documented examples, distinguishing the penultimate interglacial located at 7 OIS (251.000–195.000 years BP) has been proved correct in the Pleistocene of Europe. In Poland this interglacial is documented by lacustrine deposits of the Lubavian Interglacial (the sites: Grabówka, Losy), a mid-loess soil complex of the Tomaszów type (the sites: Odonów, Tomaszów, Nieledew, Branice, Łopatki) of the Lublinian Interglacial and marine deposits of the so-called Sztum Sea (the site Nowiny). Out of Poland it is characterized by marine deposits of the Grřdeland Interglacial, as well as by lacustrine deposits of the Le Buchet, Uecker, Snaigupélé, Shklov, Cherepet Interglacial, and the Korshev, Kaydaki mid-loess soil complex. It is also possible that part of the sites in the Polish Lowlands that previously have been, solely on the basis of palynologic experts, attributed to the last interglacial (Eemian), in fact represent the penultimate interglacial (Lubavian, Lublinian), separating the Krznanian Glaciation (8 OIS) from the Odranian Glaciation (6 OIS).

Erthwork during rebuilding of the S3 route in Gorzów Wielkopolski exposed sediments of a palaeolake. The thickness of the sediment complex reaches 11 m. Two gyttja layers are separated by peats and fluvial sands and muds. The sequence reflects a multiphase development of the lake. Lacustrine sediments overlie Odranian (Saalian) (MOIS 6) glaciofluvial deposits and are covered by Vistulian glacial sediments (MOIS 2). At present, the stratigraphic position of the palaeolake is dated to the Eemian (MOIS 5e), with a probable continuation of the deposition into the early Vistulian (MOIS 5d-4). Rhinoceros bones (more than 100 pieces), including a skull with 24 well-preserved teeth, were discovered in the lower part of the palaeolake sediments. The preliminary expertise report, based mainly on the teeth analysis, allows assigning the rhinoceros remains into the genus Stephanorhinus. The finding of so many pieces of the skeleton of Stephanorhinus sp. in situ is unique on the scale of European scale. Apart from the rhinoceros remains, a single metacarpal bone of fallow deer (Dama dama) was found in the site. This is the first record of extant fallow deer in the Pleistocene of Poland. The palaeolake sediments were sampled and multidisciplinary research is planned to reconstruct the history of the development of this basin. The relationship between the rhinoceros andfallow deer remains with the palaeoenvironment will make it possible to ascertain the conditions in which those animals lived at higher latitudes during the Eemian Interglacial.

Intertills sand deposits of the Augustovian, Great and Eemian Interglacials were recognized in eight borehole sections of the Chełmno Lakeland. Wartanian glaciofluvial sediments were also studied. All these deposits are well defined in the area by lithological analyses of granulation, mineral composition of light and heavy fractions, roundness of quartz grains and calcium carbonate content. Their Great and Eemian Interglacial age is evidenced by palynological analyses. Among various lithological features distinguishing the interglacial deposits from glaciofluvial ones the most important are mineral characteristics such as contribution of light and heavy fractions. Quantitative lithological features of the interglacial and glaciofluvial sand deposits resulted from many geologic and sedimentologic factors.

Opis:
The thickness of Pleistocene deposits in the Kleszczów Graben reach 300 m. Data from these deposits are important for stratigraphic schemes of the Pleistocene of Poland. However, up to now the Mazovian Interglacial deposits were recognized from boreholes only, not from the exposures in the open-cast mine and they comprise incomplete interglacial successions. The present analysis of organic deposits from closed depression exposed on the escarpment of the mine, reveals almost the full pollen succession of the Mazovian Interglacial. The succession started with dominance of birch forest followed by birch-pine and afterwards birch-pine forest with increasing share of alder, spruce and thermophilous trees that led to development of mixed forest which corresponded to climatic interglacial optimum. First there were forests with share of yew which later were replaced by hornbeam and fir. The fir-hornbeam phase closed the climatic optimum. The distinctly colder pine phase following fir-hornbeam phase ended the interglacial succesion of plants in Folwark 93K site. On the basis of changes in diatom composition and relative (percentage) diatom frequency in this site it was determined that the fossil lake sediments represent the diatom succession of the Mazovian Interglacial. The diatom succession from Folwark has been divided into 7 local diatom assemblage zones (LDAZ Fd 1–Fd7). These zones represent four stages of paleolake development and correspond to the local and regional pollen assemblage zones of the Mazovian Interglacial. The Mazovian Interglacial age of the organic deposits from the site Folwark 93K implies the revision of the stratigraphical position of some lithostratigraphic units from the Middle Pleistocene in the Kleszczów Graben. The obtained results indicate also that at least some intensive deformations of the Lower Pleistocene deposits were completed before the Mazovian Interglacial.

Series of lacustrine-boggy sediments from a drilling core at the Żarnowo site (the Augustów Plain, NE Poland) have been investigated by means of high-resolution pollen analysis. The pollen succession from Żarnowo is of a long pollen sequence nature. Twenty three local pollen assemblage zones representing decline of the Narevian Glaciation, Augustovian Interglacial and the beginning of the Nidanian Glaciation have been distinguished. The interglacial part of the pollen succession is characterized by the presence of two warm stages (of interglacial rank) separated by a cold stage comprising stadial and interstadial intervals. This long pollen sequence was compared with other pollen sequences from the Augustów Plain, and with those of the Ferdynandovian age.

The paper shows results of pollen analysis of organic sediments from the site Malice (M1). The diagram includes 11 local pollen zones representing Mazovian Interglacial. Forest landscape in the vicinity of the site has changed together with the climate amelioration. In the beginning of the interglacial, birch and pine forests predominated in this area. Later, they were replaced by alder, spruce and yew communities, and next by multispecies deciduous forests and fir woods. Warm and humid climate of this interglacial is indicated for instance by high percentage of Taxus pollen (49%). According to Janczyk-Kopikowa, 1991 at the beginning of the pollen period III the pollen curves show that an intrainterglacial climate cooling might have taken place what has also been recorded in many pollen diagrams of this interglacial in Poland. Pollen succession from Malice, apart from features characteristic for the succession of Mazovian Interglacial, also shows many local features caused by differentiation of habitats, and various hydrological and microclimatic conditions. Similar features are also revealed from the succession at the site Konieczki located nearby. Despite the fact that the influence of oceanic climate in Mazovian Interglacial reached farther eastwards than it is now, the forest landscape of Poland was also regionally differentiated, although not as distinctly as it is today.

The paper presents results of pollen analysis of organic sediments from the site Katowice 2. Six local pollen assemblage zones identified in the section represent the youngest part of Mazovian Interglacial. The pollen spectra of the basal part of the section display some changes indicative of intra-interglacial cooling, well recorded in many profiles of this interglacial in Poland. The forest landscape was subsequently dominated by hornbeam-fir communities which were replaced later by those of pine forests. In turn, taxa of thermophilous aquatic plants, represented by pollen Trapa and microsporangia Azolla filiculoides and Salvinia evidence of lacustrine environment. The results of pollen analysis of sediments from the Katowice site and those hitherto obtained from some other localities in western and central part of the Polish Uplands (Malice, Raków, Wielki Bór, Konieczki i Białe Ługi) became the basis for distinguishing seven regional pollen zones for this area. As compared to pollen succession from Podlasie and eastern Poland, the most significant differences concern the course of pollen curves of Carpinus and Abies and the sequence of their pollen culmination.

In Dobrowoda village which is situated within the central area of the Polish Carpathian Foredeep, saline sulphur water has been found in a deep depression filled with Badenian sands. Environmental tracer data indicate similar interglacial age as that of shallow mineral waters occuring in Cretaceous marls in the nearby Busko Spa. Primary sulphates and secondary sulphides in all mineral waters of this region originated mainly from the dissolution of Badenian gypsum strata whereas the salinity is supposed to be the remnant of chloride salts of the same age which were completely washed out by meteoric waters during the long infiltration period after the regression of the Miocene sea. The hypothetical recharge area(s) are to the west of the study area, which means that chemical Badenian sediments occupied much larger area than the present extent of the sulphate series.
