Opis:
The constant development of large urban centres such as Kraków causes a demand for residential and industrial space, which is difficult to meet. This forces the necessity to implement further construction investments in difficult soil and water conditions. Due to the limitations resulting from the relatively small area possible for development, multi-level underground floors are designed more and more often. The foundation of additional risks, which, if not taken into account, may lead to damage to buildings. The purpose of the article is to characterize the risks involved with the placement of objects on Miocene clay layers in terms of their tendency to volumetric changes, swelling and shrinkage. The threats are presented using the example of selected buildings in Kraków, which were founded within the clay and then failed for various reasons. Additionally, the article presents the results of laboratory tests of Miocene clays from various locations within the city of Kraków.

Opis:
This paper presents an issue of microstructural changes in clay soils during the water loss due to increase of suction pressure. The change of microstructure affects the geological engineering properties of soils causes problems with the foundation of buildings. The volumetric changes of cohesive soils, containing significant amounts of clay minerals from the smectite group, are caused by a variable water content in soil. The phenomenon of the moisture change significantly alters the geological engineering properties of these soils as a result of shrinking and swelling. This paper aims at presenting the microstructural changes in remoulded specimens of Neogene clays caused by loss of moisture due to suction pressure. The scientific examination involved quantitative analyses of the microstructure using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study pore space details of remoulded specimens. Tested samples from selected levels of the Neogene clays (Poznan Series) were collected from the Warsaw-Stegny area. Samples were taken from a research polygon for these clay soils. The basic geological engineering properties of clay soils and remoulded specimens have been examined after being prepared according to strictly defined procedures. Through successive stages of the suction pressure (from 50 to 1600 kPa), the samples underwent the process of loss of moisture. Application of a novel method of sample preparation procedure for remoulded specimens allowed examining structurally homogeneous soils and obtaining results without an effect of material anisotropy. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of soil microstructures were performed using SEM and STIMAN software for quantitative images processing. The analysis allowed determination of the number of geometric and morphometric parameters of the microstructure with high accuracy. Based on this study, significant qualitative and quantitative changes in loss of moisture due to suction pressure in the process of remoulded specimens were noted along with changes in the microstructure and pore space of clay soils. The obtained results showed the effect of successive stages of "closing" of the structure of cohesive soils. Microstructural changes have a significant influence on the values of clay soil properties during the shrinkage and swelling process, which are caused by changes in the water content.

Opis:
Beidellite clay from brown coal mine "Bełchatów" is a potential material for use in insulation geo-barriers. The characteristic feature of this type of soils is its significant variability, which requires testing of permeability parameters before application as an insulation geo-layer. Coefficient of permeability of cohesive soils can be effective define on the basis of consolidation tests, which are carried out at a constant rate of loading (CL) with a simultaneous measurement of a pore water pressure. Obtained results allow specifying permeability changes related to decreasing soil porosity. Permeability analysis of green clay samples, which were taken in the area of Kleszczow Trough, is presented in this paper. Tests were carried out on natural structured samples (NNS) and prepared soil pastes. Impact of structural factors and soil saturation on obtained permeability coefficient profiles is shown and discussed in this paper on the basis of obtained consolidation test results.

Storage is one of the most widely applied methods of neutralisation of wastes, prevailing over thermal, chemical and biological treatment. Waste disposal site must be harm-less for the natural environment and for the human’s life and health. Its sealing must be reliable. However, the recently used synthetic liners are not sufficient. Experiments showed that the proper protection of the natural environment against the interaction with wastes may be achieved by using naturally occurring grounds, or by composing artificial mineral sealing barriers. The deposits to be used a as a barrier must have specific characteristics required by the binding regulations. On the example of the clays from the pit in Budy Mszczonowskie, the paper presents the range of investigations needed to evaluate applicability of the Neogene expansive soils as the sealing barriers.

Opis:
The results of micropaleonthological studies of the Sarmatian (upper Miocene) Krakowiec Clays from primary deposit as well as re-deposited ones were applied to the analysis of the stratigraphic profile of the Sopot valley fills. The study site was at the break section of the Sopot River valley in a contact zone of southern escarpment between the central part of the Roztocze and Sandomierz Basin regions (SE Poland). Species of fossil microfauna (foraminiferans, radiolarians), sponges and mollusks, as well as residual deposits were used. The documented, even if apparently small change in the lithostatigraphic profile of the Sopot valley fills, i.e., the presence of pre-Pleistocene deposits in its floor, is very important for the valley history and for interpreting other problems of river breaks and the Roztocze escarpment zone itself, e.g., sclae of the Holocene movements elevating the Roztocze Region, and their effect on expected intensity of deep fluvial erosion. In the sub-scarp zone of the Tomaszów Roztocze subregion the Krakowiec Clays occur rather shallowly. In the Sopot valley (‘Czartowe Pole’landscape preserve) they are in contact with calcareous formations. In two levels of natural clays’exposures, a dozen or so foraminiferan taxa were found. They were also below the primary deposit on the floor levels of the Sopot valley fills. The residuum of the studied strata consists of glauconite and pre-Pleistocene quartz sands, without silicate and alumosilicate, typical for postglacial formations. The Sarmatian clays present in residue were redeposited at least in the pre-Pleistocene. From the clays top up to the surface of valley fills, are Holocene deposits. The study revealed that: (1) during the Holocene and earlier the Sopot valley fills were not removed completely; (2) the floor of the valley is made not of the youngest, Holocene strata, but much older; (3) the presence of the Sarmatian microfauna in the alluvia allows to date the studied deposits as pre-Pleistocene (Pliocene?); (4) fine quartz sands and glauconite (a specific form of hydromica) both forming the residuum of the studied valley fill levels, together with the absence of other silicates and alumosilicates that are common in the Pleistocene formations, exclude the studied Krakowiec Clays from the group of glacial or fluvioglacial (Pleistocene) formations; (5) the youngest (latest Pleistocene –Holocene) movements elevating the Roztocze Region and the resulting deep fluvial erosion do not correspond with shallow occurrence of the pre-Pleistocene valley fills; this requires further discussion.

The paper presents investigations into the relationship between specific surface area of two monomineralic clays and their plastic limits. Two clays – sodium montmorillonite and calcium kaolinite were used to study. For montmorillonite, the quantity of interlayer water at plastic limit is approximately 30% of water content. The number of the layers of water molecules on the external surface area ne = 13÷14. For kaolinite (i.e. non- -swelling clay minerals which only contain water on external surface area), the number of layers of water molecules on the external surface area ne = 63.

Opis:
Clay coats on skeleton grains in clastic deposits may be of allogenic origin (detritical coats) or authigenic origin (diagenetic coats). Three types of allogenic coats are distinguished: predepositional - inherited grain rims, syndepositional - rotational plasters on skeleton grains, and postdepositional - coats resulting from mechanical clay infiltration and those formed during pedological processes. The aim of this paper is a review of literature on allogenic coats on skeleton grains, with emphasis on identification of features which may be helpful in distinguishing coats of different origin. Analyses of thin sections carried out by means of polarizing and scanning electron microscopes are suitable techniques to study microstructure of the coats. Basing on them it is possible to find distinct differences between allogenic and autigenic coats. The allogenic coats are often variable in thickness and sometimes laminated. They are usually polymineral and contain organic matter and iron compounds. The amount of coats within a layer may change significally. Some coats form geopetal structures. Distinguishing between detritical clay coats and authigenic clay coats becomes difficult in the case of rocks subjected to advanced burial diagenesis and resulting recrystalization of clay minerals. The correct interpretation of origin of the coatings on the basis of microstructural analysis is essential to further sedimentological interpratations, as it provides more data on conditions of sediment transport and deposition as well as early and late diagenetic processes. Results of microstructural analyses of glacial deposits performed by different researchers in the last years led to discovery of new mechanisms responsible for formation of detritical coats. Thus the questions of the origin of some coatings still remain open.

The substrate, whose compressibility has been analysed, served as subsoil for indirect foundations of bridges. A significant settlement of foundations was recorded while performing load tests. The results of the analysis indicate the specific structure of the Krakowiec Clays, as the cause of insufficient bearing capacity of piles. Small thickness of clay and silt layers prevents their separation, and certainly does not allow treating them as two soil types with different properties. The tested soil should be considered as a kind of natural composite, whose characteristics are unlikely to be "the resultant" of properties of constituent soils. Despite the high soil strength (very high values of strength parameters), the measured oedometer compression modules were significantly different from the standard attributed to this type of soils. The values of oedometer compression modules correspond with those prescribed by back analysis of settlement measured during the load test of piles. They were tested on natural undisturbed samples and on prepared samples of different humidities (from soil paste). The results were compared with those obtained by other researchers for soils of similar origin and alike physical properties.

The paper considers the use of high-resolution X-ray computed microtomography (μCT) as a possible method in engineering-geological laboratory research for indicating areas of weakness, location of fissures and determining homogeneity of clay samples. Furthermore, the studies were used to provide methodological guidance. Mio-Pliocene (Neogene) clay samples were taken from an excavation site of the Kopernik underground station in Warsaw. First, natural humidity, bulk density and fraction analyses of samples were made. Secondly, μCT scans were conducted, with the use of copper filters. In the final stage of the study, internal structure images for samples were processed and analysed. Furthermore, a numerical model of dry sample was developed. During the study it was observed that the increase of temperature caused by X-ray radiation has a destructive effect on the sample. This effect was eliminated by applying a protective layer on the sample, using engine oil. The article quantifies the ratio of radiation-heated fissure volume to dry sample volume and the natural fissure volume to sample volume. Moreover, sample areas with different densities or chemical composition were studied. The results lead to the conclusion that the μCT technique is applicable to characterise of Mio-Pliocene clay, supplying internal structure assessment and fissure quantification that allow for samples verification to further engineering geology in-depth analysis.

Development of building projects in the Mazovia region causes the risk of their location on the soils of specific expansive properties. These properties, expressed as swelling or shrinkage, are a serious engineering problem. Many methods are used for the evaluation ofexpansiveness; both direct and indirect test methods are used. Tests were performed on clays from the areas of Warsaw, Dobre near Mińsk Mazowiecki and Mszczonów. Comparative analysis of expansive properties of Neogene clays is based on the results of laboratory tests of mineral composition, grain size distribution, moisture content, free swelling and swelling pressure. The tests have shown that the expansive properties ofclays from the Mazowsze region can have extremely high values, which causes the needfor individual determination of potential expan-siveness for different types of clays, depending on moisture content, swelling pressure and chemistry of the environment.

The paper attempts to answer the question which method provides an accurate assessment of organic matter content in the study of Mio-Pliocene clay. Samples were taken from the excavation of Copernicus Science Centre metro station. The soil was tested by three most common techniques: ignition loss method, reaction with hydrogen peroxide, and Tiurin method. Furthermore, thermal method (DTA) was used as a complex method for mineral composition (including organic matter) verification. Results of Tiurin and DTA methods provided information about the residual presence of organic matter in the Mio-Pliocene clay. Nonetheless, because of their simplicity, the commonly used methods are ignition loss and reaction with hydrogen peroxide. The results of ignition loss method were ~7 times higher than those of the other methods. The reaction with hydrogen peroxide method, revealed a negative result ~ –0.89%, due to oxidation of iron and hydration of its compounds. Based on these observations, it can be concluded that the Tiurin method is the recommended technique for the assessment of organic matter content in cohesive soils. However, for studies requiring high accuracy and reliability, the thermal method is recommended. It is important to pay special attention in organic matter evaluation particularly for commercial projects, because organic matter evaluation can result in a large increase in the cost of investment.

The paper presents the results of geological investigations of ice-dammed clays from Wierzbica near Serock (Central Poland). Physical and mechanical properties of varved clays were determined mainly during in situ tests. Different available equipment and methods were used for determining current geological and engineering conditions. Static tests CPT(U), dilatometer tests (DMT) and pressure meter tests (PBP) were performed and compared. Deformation modulus E, shear strength cu, yield pressure σy, limit pressure pl, and other parameters were evaluated. The selected methods were compared with respect to differences between the obtained results. With the use of statistical methods, the variability of ice-dammed lake sediments is presented. For this reason, the parameters should be carefully estimated. The geological environment is still diverse and difficult to apprehend. Histograms of collected data illustrate distribution of mechanical properties of varved clays from Wierzbica.
