Opis:
The objective of this paper is to present the advantages and problems related to the application of a multi-layer model in hydrogeological investigations, exemplified by the Main Groundwater Basin No. 338. The main aquifer in this basin is Neogene, but Quaternary, Cretaceous and Palaeozoic-Proterozic aquifers have also been identified there. Due to the presence of numerous permeable layers, separated by impermeable ones of irregular distribution in the Neogene aquifer, 27 model layers have been distinguished, including 10 water-bearing horizons. A large number of model blocks caused the increase of the computational time, and a large number of layers have lengthened the calibration time of the model. However, anthropogenic or geologic threats to multi-layer structures have justified such a large number of layers, enabling the water balance for the selected part of the basin orfor the selected depth intervals with groundwater of good or bad status.

From 2009 till 2016 one of the largest in the recent years hydrogeological project "Making programmes and geological documentation in order to specify hydrogeological conditions due to determining protection zone of Main Groundwater Basins (MGB)" has been led by Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute. The aim of the project was to document and describe MGBs as the most valuable and strategic groundwater reservoirs in Poland. Therefore set of documents for 101 MGBs and adaptation of 30 already existing pieces of MGBs documentation made before 2008 has been done. 131 documented MGBs encompass around 87 000 km2, which is 26.8% area of Poland. 20 groundwater basins didn’t meet all for MGB s established hydrogeological parameters, so they were reclassified to Local Groundwater Basins (LGB). 19 of all groundwater basins (15 MGBs and 4 LGBs) don’t need protection zones as the natural thickness of confining bed provides sufficient protection. For 112 of groundwater basins the protection zone has been determined. Their surface covers around 48 500 km2, which encompasses 15.5% area of Poland.

The paper presents the methodology of estimating costs related to the legal establishment of MGB protection areas designated in hydrogeological documentations. The methodology outlines the actions allowing for carrying out balance sheets of costs arising from the introduction of rules, prohibitions and restrictions on land or water use in protected areas, compiled with the benefits of current and potential use of groundwater and preservation of current water quality. Implementation of the methodology is intended to help in the rational evaluation of the correctness of establishing protected areas. Pilot calculations were made for MGB No. 138 Pradolina Toruń-Eberswalde. The costs and benefits were estimated at the amount of 31.6 million PLN and 483.2 million PLN, respectively. Finally, the legal basis for the establishment ofprotection areas for this groundwater basin was addressed positively.

Among the groundwater basins identified within the Carpathian Massif, the Zakopane groundwater basin exhibits the greatest individuality. The basin has been chosen to test the problems referred to in the paper's title. Recognition of hydrogeological conditions by using artificial tracers was the basis for characterization of groundwater categorized as subdivided into exsurgent springs, springs draining the carbonate Eocene and Sub-Flysch aquifers of the Podhale artesian basin. The subdivision finds its confirmation in both variable concentration of tritium and values of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes ratio expressed in ‰ as beta exp.18 and beta exp.2H.

Records for main groundwater basins (MGB), prepared between the 1990ties and 2008, differ from each other in many aspects, e.g. in form, amount of information, conclusions, and recommendations for land development in MGB protection zones. According to the methodology, all orders, bans and limitations for land development must be legal, compatible with the methodology of determining MGB protection zones (Herbich et al., 2009) and specified in a way that forces their unambiguous interpretation. The instruction of adapting records for MGBs done before 2008 was written on the basis of experiences with rewriting the first 30 MGB records. This instruction contains the recommendations for the adaptation of a set of 27 MGB records, which were mentioned in the regulation of the Minister of the Environment. Records for MGBs andfor groundwater resources that included MGBs were considered as documented prior to 2008. The range of further activities has been determined based on detailed information on MGBs from these reports. Adaptation of the records can be done two wise -as a new regular record or as a supplement to the already existing record.

Opis:
The study undertakes investigations of the seasonal and long-term variability of monthly minimum groundwater levels of unconfined aquifer within selected lowland areas of Wkra and Skrwa Prawa catchments. Data were collected at four locations, monitored within the national groundwater monitoring network run by the Polish Geological Institute – NRI and cover a period of 39 years (1976–2014). Analysis performed within the study includes descriptive statistics, autocorrelation coefficients for delays from 1 to 450 months and the indicator of minimum groundwater level; results are presented using contour graphs. Data demonstrate very strong autocorrelation and internal inertia. A specific long-term irregular periodicity of monthly minimum levels’ fluctuations dominating over seasonal changes has been revealed. The study also shows, that seasonal variability of monthly minimum levels within the catchments corresponds to the continental type of groundwater fluctuations. The highest monthly minimum levels occur in spring (predominantly in April), and the lowest – in autumn (October and November). The analysis indicates no obvious overall change in the structure of seasonal monthly minimum groundwater levels within the investigated period. However, in one location within the Skrwa Prawa drainage basin, the period with the highest monthly minimum levels was brought forward from April to earlier months.

Opis:
The Upper Silesia urban-industrial region is one of the most industrialized areas in Europe, due to a concentration of mineral deposits, including hard coal, zinc and lead ores and other raw materials. Ground-water is pumped by wells and discharged by mines. Potable groundwater in this area occurs within the Neogene, Cretaceous, Triassic (over 60% of the groundwater resources) and Carboniferous formations. Within these formations, 16 major aquifers fit the quantitative and qualitative criteria proposed by Kleczkowski (1990) and extend over the total area of about 3257 km 2). Within the Pleistocene formation, nine major aquifers of porous character have been identified. They are situated in the areas of buried valleys and modern river valleys. The TDS content ranges from 47 to 1374 mg/L. More than 80% of samples represent quality classes II and III in the four-class scale of water quality, because of urban and industrial impacts. Within the Triassic carbonate forma-tion, five major aquifers have been identified in fractured–karstic–porous dolomites and limestones. This water-bearing complex is overlain partly by impermeable Keuper clays and by permeable Holocene and Pleistocene sediments. The TDS values vary from 103 to 1519 mg/L. Generally groundwater in the Triassic aquifers is of a better quality (classes I and II). Poor quality water (classes III and IV) occurs only within Zn–Pb ore mining areas and in the areas impacted by urban agglomerations. The groundwater occurring in Carboniferous sandstones is generally of poor quality due to mining impact. Therefore, no major aquifers have been distinguished in the Carboniferous strata.

Water Framework Directive

Opis:
TheWater Framework Directive (WFD) established in 2000 expresses a general EU policy orientated towards protection, sustainable utilization and improvement of the quality of water bodies. Poland signed the accession treaty with the European Union in 2004. It was automatically obliged to comply with tasks specified in existing European directives. It was for that reason that in 2002, when Poland was preparing for accession to the EU, Poland transposed the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive into the Polish legal document concerning the State’s water policy known as theWater Act. Fulfilment of the WFD’s objectives was defined in theWater Act through works of the Polish Hydrogeological Survey (PHS) established in 2002 within the Polish Geological Institute, following implementation of the Water Act. Since 2007, PHS received new duties resulting from the EU Groundwater Directive (2006/118/EU) on the protection of groundwater against pollution and deterioration (Official Journal EU L 372 from 12.12.2006). There are also hydrogeological obligations that result from another piece of national legislation called the Geology and Mining Act regarding thermal, saline and mineral waters, which are classified in Poland as mining resources. Fresh water resources are within the scope of the Water Act. At present, we observe a significant increase in usage of these resources, especially for geothermal energy and for recreational and therapeutic uses. Nevertheless, even curative waters must be considered in a systematic way, in connection with surface water and shallow groundwater, as their availability is controlled by infiltration from shallow groundwater or directly from infiltrating rivers and streams. Groundwater bodies delineated by the PHS have to be monitored and results of this monitoring are further transposed to river basin action plans. Some groundwater bodies are situated along the Polish boundary zones and these have to be controlled by both sides: PHS and the corresponding services of the neighbouring countries. The most important task for both sides is to achieve good groundwater status for trans-boundary groundwater bodies, water supplies for citizens and water dependent ecosystems. There are legal, organizational and research tasks within the monitoring schemes and water management planning projects, which belong to the duties of the PHS.

The article presents the different hydrogeological conditions and describes the water and sewage system in the Brennica river basin (about 82 km2). In this region, the Quaternary and Cretaceous aquifers, influence the groundwater supply. Hydrogeological mapping of the area was carried out in July 2012. During fieldworks 179 hand-dug wells were inventoried, in which depths to the groundwater level, pH and electrolytic conductivity of water were measured. In the next step the results of the fieldwork were verified and marked on the digital topographic map of the study area. Interpolation and extrapolation methods were used to transform point data to spatial data. As a consequence of the research, a contour map of the first groundwater level was constructed. In order to make the map readable, variable intervals of contour lines were used. The water table in the highland river basins occurs at very small depths on the hilltops and intersects the land surface in the valleys. It is contiguous with the upper surface of streams and swamps. Groundwater flow systems in the region are generally small and the aquifer boundaries are coincident with surface water divides. There is no regional ground water flow system. The groundwater is relatively vulnerable to pollution.

The aim of this study is to identify the location of the regional municipal waste landfills in relation to the Major Groundwater Basin (MGB) in Poland. Regional landfills were selected on the basis of local documentation for all 16 Polish voivodships. The replacement installations were not included in the conducted analysis. Designated regional landfills were marked on the map of the Polish MGB developed by the Polish Hydrogeological Survey of the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute (according to the National Geological Archives as of March 2012). As the result of the conducted analysis of landfill locations in relation to the MGB it was found that 42 of the 115 regional landfills are located within the designated MGB areas, which represents about 36% of the total. Aquifers within the areas where regional landfills are located occur in rock formations of different geological age. Most landfills are located within the MGB on Quaternary formations; they represent approximately 35% of all sites within the MGB limits and 13% of all regional municipal landfills. Aquifers located in Quaternary and fissured-karst aquifers are most vulnerable to contaminants infiltrating from the surface. It is particularly important to monitor the quantity and quality of landfill leachate as well as the condition of groundwater in the surroundings of the landfills located within the limits of the aquifers, especially those of Quaternary age. The results of the study can further be included in the planning stage of the development of the next edition of the waste management plans at national or local level.

The Orava-Nowy Targ Basin is the only intramontane basin in the Carpathian Mountains, where numerous low and raised peat bogs developed in the Holocene. The peat bogs were originally comprising about 40% of the basin area. to became confined to 12%, in result of several centuries of exploitation of peat. On the basis of investigations on geomorphological location of the preserved relics of peat bogs, and reconstructions of their original extent, an attempt was made to identify natural environment factors which had the biggest influence on development of peat-forming process within the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin. The most important of these factors were found to be landforms of fluvioglacial and fluvial accumulation and their composition, as well climatic conditions. However, it should be stated that distribution of raised peat bogs appears to be mainly controlled by the mode of circulation of shallow groundwaters and location of their stable outflows. This is an aspect of development of peat bogs that has not been studied up to now.

Calcareous tufa occurs at one of the investigated springs. Field studies were conducted once a month from 25th March 2017 to 28thFebruary 2018. Water of the studied springs represents the bicarbonate-calcium-magnesium type during almost the whole year. The chemical composition of both springs is characterized by seasonal variability. The highest concentrations of most ions occurred in the summer, when the rainfall was the lowest and during winter drought; while the lowest concentration - in the period of increased rainfall. The variability of physical and chemical parameters of the spring with tufa is smaller than the other one. The spring with calcareous tufa stands out by the higher concentration of Mg2+ and SO42- and the presence of radon. The unique landscape values of the surroundings and hydrogeochemical features of the spring with calcareous tufa favour this place as an interesting hydro-tourism attraction in the Bukowina Tatrzańska region.

The paper deals with the problem of anthropogenic changes in the extent of peat deposits, their volume and water retention capacity of raised and valley peat bogs in the Polish part of the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin and the Bieszczady Mts. This problem has not received a great deal of attention in the research literature. Special attention was paid to the remnants of peat domes and post-peat areas. The decrease in the area of peat bogs, the volume of peat deposit and the quantity of water retained within them were estimated for the last ca. 400 years. This paper is based on an analysis of maps produced over the last 230 years as well as aerial photographs. Field data and laboratory data were also analyzed as part of this research.
