Opis:
The full-time studies in geology started in Poznaň in 1919, i.e.when the Piast University (Wszechnica Piastowska) were established, soon after renamed to the Poznań University. Three institutes, namely Geology, Mineralogy and Palaeontology, were created. Scientists employed in those institutes produced nearly 8% of all papers in geology, published in Poland before the Second World War. Already in the academic year 1945/1946, a very small teaching team, lead by Professor K. Smulikowski, re-established the full-time studies in geology at the Poznań University, active until 1952. Only 18 students were able to receive their MSc degrees during that time. From 1952 to 1988, the full-time studies in geology were suspended. The small Chair of Geology offered courses in geology for biology and geography students first, and exclusively for geography afterwards. However, the scientific personnel of the Chair was very active in scientific investigations and publishing. Eight persons, five of them from the outside, received their PhD degrees in geology and palaeontology from the Chair. The intensive effort, started in 1987, resulted in the re-establishment of the full-time studies in Geology at Adam Mickiewicz University in the academic year 1988/1989. Following that important event and thanks to the full-time employment of several outstanding professors in geology, mineralogy, hydrogeology and palaeontology, the Chair of Geology was elevated in November 1990 to the level of the Institute of Geology. In 1992, the Institute of Geology received its permanent seat occupied to date. In 1994, the first geology students were graduated. From that time and until 2019, we graduated 378 BSc, 1017 MSc, 72 PhD and 23 DSc (habilitation), and 11 scientists received the scientific title of full professor.

Opis:
BGS has recently stopped its' systematic surveying and litho-printed geological map production. Instead we are undertaking integrated responsive mapping and 3D modelling in user-defined target areas using all available geospatial data (maps, boreholes, geophysics) assessed in a single workspace. The output will be 3D geological framework models that capture the understanding and interpretation of the survey geologist. These 3D geological maps (framework models) are used for both visualisation and analysis to enable management of the subsurface. Downstream the models can be populated with properties for process modelling. These models enhance corporate datasets and can be further edited, what would then result in newer improved versions being returned to the object store.

Opis:
From the beginning of geological investigations of the Polish Lowlands both the geological and the regional tectonic units were used simultaneously. The Szczecin-Gorzów Synclinorium should be distinguished in terms of tectono-structural rules. The Gorzów Block - as a geological unit - is defined on the basis of extent and differentiation of the Upper Cretaceous thickness or by distribution of local structures (mainly halotectonic and halokinetic ones) developed in the Zechstein-Mesozoic complex. Basement in the Gorzów Block area is uplifted in its consolidated part and also the top of Moho is elevated. Both uplifts are well correlated with the Permian-Mesozoic palaeogeothermal anomaly. The Gorzów Block incorporates also the north-western part of Wolsztyn Ridge which was active during the Permian-Mesozoic time. In the early Rotliegend time this area was characterized by volcanic activity. In the late Rotliegend it was a source for clastics deposited around the Wolsztyn Ridge. Also the carbonate platform facies of the Main Dolomite (Ca2) is associated with this uplifted area. The mentioned region is situated in the distal part of asymmetric, Polish rift basin. Development of basin analysis - as an interdisciplinary domain of the Earth Sciences - indicates the need of applying various geological units, adequate to the considering problem. Modern research methods in geology (computerization, GIS) enable the data bases creation for individual geological units necessary for study of their origin and evolution up to their present geological pattern.

History of the use of natural stones in Brisbane architecture (east coast Australia) begun in 1823 when first colonists came to Australia. The authors present main historical buildings of Brisbane and rocks that were used to construct them. The stone materials were taken from closer and further surroundings of Brisbane, they include: Moggill, Murphys Creek, Albion Heights, Breakfast Creek, Yangan, and Sydney sandstones, Oamaru limestones as well as Upper Triassic-Lower Jurassic sandstones of Goodna and Helidon, the Triassic versicoloured pyroclastic ryolitic the Brisbane tuff (consisting of tuffs and ignimbrites) exposed in Kangaroo Point by the Brisbane River. There is also possible to find granitoides from Albion Heights and Enoggera, quartz diorites from Karana (Mount Crosby) and the Samford biotitic grandiorites from Camp Mountain. Currently the Brisbane architecture is dominated by more attractive stone material imported from outside Australia.

Opis:
24th Colloquium of Geological Society of Africa covered a wide range of fields in geology, from basic research and mineral resources geology to hydrogeology and geotourism. Presentations delivered at the colloquium confirmed vast scale of mineral wealth of Africa, showing at the same time that any substantial further progress in identifying new resources is hampered by the lack of good geological maps at appropriate scales. Some major problems in exploitation of mineral resources in Africa are related to artisanal and small scale mining (ASM). On one hand, ASM provides an income that is sufficient to cover basic needs for tens of millions of Africans, and on the other hand-its environmental impact may be very harmful, especially in the case of mining and processing of gold-bearing ores. Geological research in Africa is usually supported scientifically and financially by EU countries, USA, Canada, Australia as well as China. This is due to the lack of local specialists and sufficiently equipped laboratories practically everywhere except for RSA. Also two papers presented by the Author and his team gave results of research carried out in Angola and Zambia mainly thanks to assistance projects financed by the Polish Aid Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland.

Professor Bohdan Swiderski (1892-1943) was one of the most outstanding Polish tectonicians of the Carpathians. In 1911-1917 he studied in Switzerland at Prof. Maurice Lugeon, a famous Alpine geologist, and was a collaborator of the Swiss Geological Commission. From 1919, Bohdan Swiderski was interested in the Carpathian geology, especially in studying the Eastern Flysch Carpathians, poorly known at those times. As the first researcher in the Carpathians he applied a quantitative tectonic analysis to determine the relationship between the folding style and lithology, carried out geomorphological studies, and was an expert in petroleum exploration. He was a collaborator and an employee of the Polish Geological Institute, a professor at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and the University of Poznań. After the outbreak of World War II, Bohdan Swiderski was imprisoned in the German concentration camp Auschwitz. He died suddenly in 1943, shortly after his release from the camp.

Commercial deposits in impact structures are world-class range resources. They contain the most important resources of copper, nickel, uranium, gold, platinum group elements and hydrocarbons. Terrestrial craters are also sources of mineral waters and building materials, and they can be reservoirs of hydropower. There are three types of deposits in meteorite craters: progenetic – originate before impact, syngenetic – originate during impact, and epigenetic – result from postimpact processes. The estimated number of Earth’s craters suggests that impact structures can be potentially good sources of economic deposits and tourism resources.

This paper summarizes four years of geological research in the Pomerania Bay and Oder Bank. As a result of the synthesis of new and archival data,we have compiled maps, cross-sections and models depicting the geological structure of the Quaternary and its basement, and the relief of structural surfaces. Two main seismostratigraphic sedimentary complexes are distinguished. The first corresponds to Pleistocene glacial and interstadial deposits. The second one is composed of Late Glacial and Holocene lacustrine-swamp and marine sediments. The outline of geochemical condition of the sea bottom is also presented. The content of the elements is always below the acceptable concentration and the origin of the elements is geogenic. Special attention has been given to mineral resources on the bottom surface and to documenting deposits of sand containing heavy minerals. The characterization of areas with sands suitable for beach nourishment and valorization of deposits and prospective areas have also been of great importance. The history of the development of the geological structure and palaeogeography of the area is the summary of the results.

New data on Balthasar (Belsazar) Hacquet (1739–1815), French traveller, naturalist, geologist and Professor of the Universities in Lviv and Cracow, in the light of some unpublished documents of the French and German archives Balthasar Hacquet, French physician and naturalist, Austrian army officer and inspector of mines in this country, has marked the history of natural science. Also as Professor of the Universities in Lviv and Cracow, he distinguished himself in many disciplines (botany, geology, anthropology and medicine), and particularly in the descriptions of the nature of the Carpathians and the Alps. This important person in the République des savants does not have the place in the contemporary historiography of science. His correspondence with French naturalists Georges Cuvier and Philippe-Isidore Picot de Lapeyrouse, as well as his autobiography and numerous documents, preserved in various archives, help to better understand his role in the development of natural sciences.
