Opis:
The paper presents detailed geochemical survey of stream sediments in Zagożdżonka river system. The Zagożdżonka river drains agricultural areas and forests [Puszcza Kozienicka] and flows through towns-Pionki and Kozienice. The works [metallurgical, power plants, plastic materials, munitions-factory localized in towns put industrial and communal sewage into Zagożdżonka river. Active sediments (180 samples; <0.2 mm) were leached with HCl (1:4); then, using the ICP-AES method determinations were made the concentration of Ag, Al, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, S, Sr, Ti, V and Zn. Mercury concentration was measured using the CV-AAS method. The geochemical survey reveals that industrial plants activity are the main sources of anthropogenic pollution of stream sediments in Zagożdżonka river catchment. The strong local anomalies of As, Be, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sr, Ti and Zn near Pionki and Kozienice towns can be related to low efficiency of sewage treatment plants in metal removing.

Opis:
The deposits under study (Brzostów, Krotoszyn, Ostrzeszów, Góra) and the Leszno borehole are located in Southern Wielkopolska, Polish Lowlands. Geochemical characteristics of the upper part of the Neogene Poznan Formation were presented on the basis of major elements analyses. The sediments were classified as clays, silts and sands. Quartz in coarse fraction and clay minerals (smectite, mixed layers smectite/illite, kaolinite, traces of chlorite and halloysite) in fine fraction are the main components. Their chemical composition depends mainly on mineralogical content. The sediments were strongly depleted in Ca and Na during weathering processes. Calculated chemical indices of alternation, CIA and CIW range from 59.9 to 91 and 68 to 93 respectively, indicating intense chemical weathering phenomena.

Opis:
Bromine content was determined in 50 samples taken from the Zechstein (Upper Permian) mixed clay-salt rocks both in a sample bulk and in pure halite crystals, manualy separated. This study attempted to define bromine contents directly related to pure halite and connected with clay minerals in analysed samples. The examined samples were collected in galleries of theKłodawa salt mine from the Brownish Zuber Unit (Na3t), representing PZ3 cycle and from the Red Zuber Unit (Na4t) of PZ4 cycle. Mineral composition of clay fraction in the Zechstein mixed clay-salt rocks, represented both by zubers sensu stricto (clay content 15–85%) and clayey halite (clay <15%), is monotonous and rather constant. Bromine concentration depends on salinity of mother solutions as well as on content of minerals incorporating bromine (halite, clay minerals). In samples of the Red Zuber Unit the bromine contents attributed to clay minerals were so low that they do not influence the bromine concentrations determined in total samples and they could be neglected in genetic considerations. Deposits of the Brownish Zuber Unit were precipitated from brines much more concentrated than the mother solutions of the Red Zuber rocks. Increasing content of water-insoluble residue (mainly clay minerals) in samples of the Brownish Zuber unit is accompanied with higher bromine concentrations. Difference between bromine content in total samples and in pure halite crystals also increases. So the reliable interpretation of genesis and depositional environment of halites, being a constituent of the Brownish Zuber rocks, requires detecting bromine in separated pure halite crystals.

Opis:
Geochemical prospecting was conducted in three areas of the Pieniny Mountains: Wżar, Jarmuta and Bryjarka regions. Rock samples were collected in the regular grid of 100 x 100 m. A total number of 786 samples were collected from these areas (449 samples near Wżar Mt., 256 samples from Jarmuta, and 81 samples from Bryjarka). Forty-one samples were taken from the Wżar and Jarmuta quarries. Thirty samples of aqueous sediments and pan concentrates were collected from streams of the study areas. The geochemical studies show elevated concentrations of Pb, As, Bi, Cd, Zn, Sn, Tl and K (Rb) in the south-western part of the Wżar Mt., and elevated concentrations of Pb, Bi, Cd, Cu, Ni, Sb, Zn, Fe, Hg and Mn in the vicinity of Jarmuta. Stream sediment samples from the Bryjarka area contain 0.358 and 0.291 ppm Hg (Ścigocki stream) and 0.037ppm Au (Szczawny stream). These anomalies suggest the presence of weak ore mineralization associated with hydrothermal processes due to andesite magmatism. Based on analytical data, it may be concluded that investigated areas of the Wżar, Bryjarka and Jarmuta Mt. are not prospective for ore deposits. The only zone that requires detailed studies is the northern part of Jarmuta, where increased concentrations of Ag within the limits of 7.0-88.0 ppm were found in slope-wash clays in 12 neighbouring samples. The studies of pan concentrates show the presence of detrital gold in the Szczawny stream (1 grain) and the Grajcarek stream (3 grains in 2 samples).

Middle Miocene Badenian salt, occurring in the frontal zone of the Carpathian Overthrust (southern Poland), and the Upper Permian (Zechstein) bedded and diapir salt deposits, have been the subject of the research by PGI scientists. Many salt deposits were discovered by the PGI, but in particular, the greatest achievement related to the origin of salt deposits is the reconstruction of sedimentary environments and conditions based on detailed sedimentological and geochemical analyses.

Opis:
Fifteen samples of basaltoid rocks have been analysed from the Lower Silesia, SW Poland, some of them from localities close to the Sudetic Marginal Fault. K-Ar datings have been made on whole rock samples, using the methodology applied by the Institute of Nuclear Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Debrecen, Hungary. Most of the samples give ages ranging between 21- 38 Ma, whereas that derived from a borehole in the Mokrzeszów Graben has been dated to 44 Ma. Another borehole sample (Jeżów Sudecki B-5), close to the Intrasudetic Fault, is of 59 Ma age. On the other hand, the supposedly "Quaternary" basaltoids from Dębowiec area fall into the interval of 29–30 Ma. The southeasternmost occurrences of the Lower Silesian basaltoids at Nowa Cerekiew display two generations of effusive activity: the older lava flows (26 Ma) are cut by plugs dated to 22 Ma. The Oligocene–Lower Miocene (26-33 Ma, 20'24 Ma) rocks represent alkali basalts and basanites. The alkali basalts consist of phenocrysts of olivine (chrysolite), altered to a different degree, and clinopyroxene (salite). In the matrix, clinopyroxene (Ti-salite), olivine (hyalosiderite), plagioclases (labradorite–andesine), and opaque minerals (titanomagnetite, ilmenite) occur. The basanites contain phenocrysts of altered olivine (chrysolite) and clinopyroxene (salite). Their matrix consists of clinopyroxene (Ti-salites), olivine (hyalosiderite), nepheline, plagioclases (bytownite–andesine), and opaque minerals. On the TAS diagram, samples of the studied basaltoids plot mainly in the fields of basalts and basanites/tephrites. The bimodality of some samples falling into two fields of basalts and basanites/nephelinites on the TiO2/Zr-Nb/y diagram results from their distinct geochemical signature.

Opis:
Origin of natural gas of Gorzysław, Białogard and Daszewo fields from Lower and Upper Carboniferous, and Rotliegend reservoirs on the Baltic part of the Western Pomerania was characterized by means of geochemical methods. The results of molecular analyses as well as stable carbon isotope analyses of methane, ethane, propane and carbon dioxide, stable hydrogen isotope analyses of methane and stable nitrogen isotope analyses of gaseous nitrogen enabled the determination of gas origin. Gaseous hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide originated from thermogenic processes from type III kerogen with small component of type II kerogen. At least two phases of gas generation took place: the first one at the stage of 0.6 to 0.8%, and the other one at the stage of 1.4 to 1.8% maturity of source rocks in the vitrinite reflectance scale. Gaseous hydrocarbons generated from source rocks within the Upper Carboniferous (Wesphalian) and Lower Carboniferous (Visean) strata. Nitrogen probably originated during thermocatalytic processes of organic matter transformation and partly in abiogenic processes.

Opis:
In the autochthonous Upper Badenian and Lower Sarmatian strata of the Carpathian Foredeep in the Rzeszów area the total organic carbon (TOC) contents vary from 0.02 to 1.26 wt. %(average 0.64 wt. %). Geochemical studies on the dispersed organic matter demonstrated the presence of gas-prone type III (humic) kerogen with small admixtures of algal type II kerogen. At depths less than 2,500 metres the organic matter is immature, thus microbial processes predominated. Methane concentration in natural gases accumulated within Miocene strata usually exceeded 94 vol. %and was generated by microbial reduction of carbon dioxide. Microbial methane was generated mainly during deposition of autochthonous Miocene sediments, but it is possible that this process continues today on a small scale. Higher gaseous hydrocarbons (mainly ethane and propane), which are usually minor constituents (concentrations less than 0.4 vol. %), were generated during diagenetic processes and at the initial stage of the low-temperature thermogenic processes. The slight changes in the geochemical indices of dispersed organic matter and isotope ratios of natural gases with depth are evidence of the homogeneity of deposition of humic organic matter in shallow marine basin during the Late Badenian and the Early Sarmatian and the fact that similar gas generation conditions can be found in the Miocene sequence. Generation and accumulation of microbial methane and the formation and charging multiple stacked reservoirs within the autochthonous Miocene strata, e.g., Palikówka, Jasionka, Stobierna and Terliczka deposits, was facilitated by rhythmic and cyclic deposition of clays and sands and their very high sedimentation rate.

Opis:
Geologists of the Polish Geological Institute carried out their professional activities abroad as part of geological expeditions, in teams of several people and on individual contracts, including as experts of the United Nations. In terms of the scope of work, most of their activities were focued on research on mineral resources, mapping, geochemistry, hydrogeology and geophysics, as well as on teaching of geology at the university level. The beginnings date back to the turn of the 1950s. It began with a geological expedition to Vietnam. Mongolia was the goal of subsequent expeditions on a much wider scale. The researches were conducted from the beginning of the 1960s until the end of the 1980s. The contracts, performed in groups of several people and individually, covered about 20 countries; most of them on the African continent. They focused primarily on the search for metal ore deposits, hard coal, and chemical and rock raw materials. PGI geologists also worked as UN experts in Benin, Burundi, Chad, Gabon, Haiti, India, Madagascar, Mauritania and Niger. The results of their work on various continents were the discoveries of numerous mineral deposits and the recognition of geological structure over an area of thousands of square kilometres.
