Opis:
Interaction of surface water and groundwater is an important element of issue in hydrogeological measurements. Surface water may infiltrate into the subsurface through the bed sediments of rivers and water reservoirs. An opposite direction of reverse water flow through these sediments is also possible with groundwater seeping into surface water. The paper presents two new measuring apparatus: a so-called “filtrometer” and a “gradientmeter”. The filtrometer enables measuring the intensity of water filtration through bed sediments, both during drainage and infiltration. The gradientmeter is designed to measure the hydraulic gradient in the bed sediments. After measuring both of these parameters, it is possible to determine the in situ hydraulic conductivity of these sediments. Usability testing of the new devices was performed under field conditions. The filtrometer and the gradientmeter were used to determine the drainage conditions of a tested section of the Parsêta river. The drainage volume measured with the instruments was in good agreement accordance with the value obtained using the differential water flow method. The proposed new method way of determining the hydraulic parameters of the bed sediments extends the present scope of hydrogeological research.

Opis:
The study undertakes investigations of the seasonal and long-term variability of monthly minimum groundwater levels of unconfined aquifer within selected lowland areas of Wkra and Skrwa Prawa catchments. Data were collected at four locations, monitored within the national groundwater monitoring network run by the Polish Geological Institute – NRI and cover a period of 39 years (1976–2014). Analysis performed within the study includes descriptive statistics, autocorrelation coefficients for delays from 1 to 450 months and the indicator of minimum groundwater level; results are presented using contour graphs. Data demonstrate very strong autocorrelation and internal inertia. A specific long-term irregular periodicity of monthly minimum levels’ fluctuations dominating over seasonal changes has been revealed. The study also shows, that seasonal variability of monthly minimum levels within the catchments corresponds to the continental type of groundwater fluctuations. The highest monthly minimum levels occur in spring (predominantly in April), and the lowest – in autumn (October and November). The analysis indicates no obvious overall change in the structure of seasonal monthly minimum groundwater levels within the investigated period. However, in one location within the Skrwa Prawa drainage basin, the period with the highest monthly minimum levels was brought forward from April to earlier months.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the problem of water draining from brown coal pits, which has occurred since the 1950s in the Gniezno Lakeland in the western part of central Poland. Threats to hydrogeological systems and related lake systems under conditions of mining-induced drainage near the lakes located in the Powidz Landscape Park (PLP) are indicated. The lowering of water level in the PLP lakes exceeds 5 m, as compared to the pre-mining-induced drainage state. Such a rapid change may cause ecological disaster for these deep-water, healthy lake ecosystems with abundant submerged macrophyte (Charophyte) habitats (Natura 2000 protected area). Considering the regional context, the causes of hydrodynamic pressure leading to degradation of Lake Wilczyńskie and neighbouring, hydrologically connected lakes, are presented. The proposed mitigation actions for improving the ecological state of these lakes are presented in the contexts of (1) water balance assessment, (2) hydrotechnical issues related to the redistribution of water from the Slesiňski Canal (the Warta River - Lake Goplo) through water pipeline transmission, and (3) the accelerating groundwater reclamation of the Jóźwin IIB open mine pit area.

The paper presents the water chemistry from subsurface drainage systems located in an agricultural area. Studies have shown a significant degree of transformation of chemical composition, observed in a hydrochemical multi-ionic type, in which nitrates play the main role. This is the predominant form of mineral nitrogen in the water and accounts for an average of 95%, which corresponds to a concentration range of 11.07 to 47.82 mg/dm3. Field studies were the basis for determining the reliability of the theoretical model for the distribution ofnitrogen loading leached from soils. Loading was computed on the basis of statistical data concerned average annual fertilizer usage expressed as a pure component, and data from own research on the estimation of nitrogen leaching rate. Nitrogen loadings in the range of 1.54-13.17 kgN/ha-year was converted to the expected nitrate concentrations in infiltration waters through the vadose zone, taking into account the average infiltration recharge. The expected nitrate concentration range of 1.69 to 120.00 mg/dm3 (with the concentrations above 50 mg/dm3 observed in 18.4% of the area) may be the basis for designing the most vulnerable areas (OSN) for nitrogen leaching to surface water and groundwater.

Fresh water accumulated beneath the sea floor may flow through sediments into the sea water. This process, opposite to infiltration, is called Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD). The Southern Baltic Sea coastal zone represents an interesting object of study because its bottom deposits show seepages of fresh groundwater. The study involved Puck Bay and the adjacent coastal belt of the Kashubian Coast plateau. Research of potential outflows of fresh groundwater was done through a thermal imaging of the study area. An articulate thermal anomaly allowed predetermining the location of research points. Groundwater outflows in the seabed were confirmed by measurements of chloride content and electrical conductivity of water samples. The paper presents two new devices: a filtrometer that enables measurement of water filtration intensity during drainage, and a gradientmeter that measures the hydraulic gradient. The use of both devices allows determination of the in situ hydraulic conductivity. Results of the research have shown relationships between fresh groundwater and the sea-bottom sediments.

Opis:
In this paper we have analyzed the influence of the Weichselian ice sheet advance on the groundwater system in the Odra lobe area using hydrogeological numerical modelling performed with the finite difference method. The results indicate entire re-organization of the groundwater system in relation to non-glacial times mainly affecting the flow directions, velocities and fluxes. The re-organization of groundwater flow was caused by the pressure gradient imposed by the sloping ice sheet surface especially obvious under the ice margin and some distance in front of it. Simulated groundwater flow velocities are significantly higher than the present velocities in that area while the major groundwater flow direction is to the south, i.e. opposite to the present direction. Coupling the simulation results with assumed basal melting rate suggests that only a small fraction of basal meltwater [~24%) could have drained through the bed. The surplus water likely accumulated at the ice/bed interface facilitating faster ice flow of the Odra lobe due to enhanced basal sliding and bed deformation.

Drainage of aquifers, processing of copper ores, and surface storage of extractive wastes (post-processing copper ore tailings) accompanying the mining activities in the Lubin-Głogów Copper Ore District (LGOM), SW Poland, affect the natural environment of the area, including surface and groundwaters. The paper focuses on assessment of the influence of this processes on operating conditions of the "Sobin-Jędrzychów ” groundwater intake. In order to simulate the aquifer and processes, a multiple (7) layer numerical model was developed and water balance calculations were performed. MODPATH computational particle tracking analysis was used to analyze migration ofpollutants from the foreground of the "Gilów” tailings storage into the subsurface, including deeper aquifers. The modelling studies have shown that the impact of mining drainage on groundwater resources is rather insignificant in the area of the "Sobin-Jędrzychów” intake. However, its southern part may be negatively influenced by migration of pollutants from the front of the "Gilów” tailings storage.

Opis:
The influence and amounts of groundwater inflow to the open pit limestone mine "Celiny” (Kielce region, southern Poland) were determined in this paper. Based on the collected data, a quantitative assessment of the groundwater bodies (GWB) Nos. 101 and 115 was conducted, and the range of the depression cone and the impact on water intakes operating in the vicinity of the mine were determined. The collectedfield and archival data were used to build a conceptual model, based on which a numerical model of the groundwater circulation system was developed using Visual MODFLOW software. The numerical model maps the five-layer groundwater circulation system in conjunction with surface watercourses. The external boundary of the 130 km2 model area (divided into square grids of 50 m) was based mainly on watercourses and locally on watersheds. Computer simulations (15 in total) were carried out for three hydrodynamic conditions related to the multi-year (1951-2015) precipitation: average, dry and wet, for three ordinates of the open pit drainage: 241.5, 230.5 and 219.5 m a.s.l. and a diverse exploitation status of the existing groundwater intakes, and taking into account the open pits operating in the research area. The results show that the designed drainage of the open pit mine will not have a significant impact on the quantitative status of the adjacent GWBs.

Water Framework Directive

Opis:
TheWater Framework Directive (WFD) established in 2000 expresses a general EU policy orientated towards protection, sustainable utilization and improvement of the quality of water bodies. Poland signed the accession treaty with the European Union in 2004. It was automatically obliged to comply with tasks specified in existing European directives. It was for that reason that in 2002, when Poland was preparing for accession to the EU, Poland transposed the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive into the Polish legal document concerning the State’s water policy known as theWater Act. Fulfilment of the WFD’s objectives was defined in theWater Act through works of the Polish Hydrogeological Survey (PHS) established in 2002 within the Polish Geological Institute, following implementation of the Water Act. Since 2007, PHS received new duties resulting from the EU Groundwater Directive (2006/118/EU) on the protection of groundwater against pollution and deterioration (Official Journal EU L 372 from 12.12.2006). There are also hydrogeological obligations that result from another piece of national legislation called the Geology and Mining Act regarding thermal, saline and mineral waters, which are classified in Poland as mining resources. Fresh water resources are within the scope of the Water Act. At present, we observe a significant increase in usage of these resources, especially for geothermal energy and for recreational and therapeutic uses. Nevertheless, even curative waters must be considered in a systematic way, in connection with surface water and shallow groundwater, as their availability is controlled by infiltration from shallow groundwater or directly from infiltrating rivers and streams. Groundwater bodies delineated by the PHS have to be monitored and results of this monitoring are further transposed to river basin action plans. Some groundwater bodies are situated along the Polish boundary zones and these have to be controlled by both sides: PHS and the corresponding services of the neighbouring countries. The most important task for both sides is to achieve good groundwater status for trans-boundary groundwater bodies, water supplies for citizens and water dependent ecosystems. There are legal, organizational and research tasks within the monitoring schemes and water management planning projects, which belong to the duties of the PHS.

This paper presents an analysis of the groundwater inflow into the Polkowice mining area. It is a mining area where the highest inflow into the mine from the whole Legnica-Glogów Copper District can be observed. In the multi-aquifer formation system, which occurs in the study area, a significant role is played by: Paleogene and Neogene, Triassic and Permian aquifers. The principal objective was to determine the discharging groundwater resources in deep aquifers in relation to the current hydrogeological conditions observed in the mine. The results helped to describe problems and possibilities of high frequency measurements in mine workings and to give some clues to the improvement of measurement methodology. This research was based on direct measurements, analysis of collecting data, and a comparison with existing data regarding the inflow into the mine workings.

The western part of the Middle Triassic Ridge is cut by two narrow gorges. At present the Odra River is running through the western gorge in the vicinity of Krapkowice and a small stream, right-bank tributary of this river, through the eastern one, passing 1–2 km to the east of the former. These erosive forms were hitherto interpreted as epigenetic gorges of the Odra. A row of elongated hills built of gravel and sands is found at southeasterly prologation of the eastern erosive gorge. The field study carried out at a site located at one of these hills indicates direct connections and subglacial origin of these erosive forms and hills. Most probably the eastern gorge represents a fragment of a subglacial tunnel valley, which continues northwards into the zone of the present-day Odra channel. The hills located at prolongation of the gorges are interpreted as eskers. Because of the high similarity, the western gorge valley is most probably also of subglacial origin. The studied part of the subglacial drainage system most probably originated in result of an outburst flood of subglacial water temporarily stored at the bottom of the ice-sheet. The tunnel valley and eskars were formed during Odranian glaciation.

Opis:
Chemical components in groundwater from mine drainage or used in geothermal installations are a potential source of valuable minerals. At the Polish Geological Institute - National Research Institute, a study was carried out to identify the content of elements in mine waters, wells exploiting natural gas and oil as well as geothermal and therapeutic waters in Poland. The aim of the research was to recognize the concentration of potentially useful minerals in groundwater and the possibility of their recovery. It was the first project that focused on the recovery of elements from groundwater on a national scale in Poland. For this purpose, 67 sites were selected, in which 75 water samples were taken and the content of65 chemical components was determined. Then, the amount of minerals that could be recovered from mine waters and geothermal brines was calculated based on the amount of water pumped in each facility. The calculations involved the approximate efficiency and working time of the recovery installation. As a result of this research, it was found that the mine waters and geothermal brines in Poland contain resources of valuable elements in very different amounts. In more than half of the examined sites, the estimated resources of minerals are present in amounts that are not prospective. However, in 29 sites, mine waters and geothermal brines contain elevated concentrations of several elements, including - B, Br, I, K, Li, Mg and Mn. If they were successfully recovered, they could represent a potential additional income for the mining and geothermal industries. Dębieńsko Desalination Plant of mine waters in Upper Silesia is the most promising potential source of recovery of minerals from mine waters, where the total resources of minerals to be recovered from concentrated brine have been estimated as the highest. Rudna Copper Mine in Lower Silesia is in second place, with one of the highest resources and the largest amount of minerals to be recovered from groundwater. Other sites are: the SOLINO Salt Mine, “Olza” mine water collector, mine waters pumped from abandoned coal mines in the Upper Silesia (in Zabrze, Siemianowice Śląskie, Czeladź, Gliwice), and plants producing geothermal energy in Stargard, Pyrzyce and Bańska. Total amount of mineral resources that can be recovered from waters pumped from the most promising sites is over72 000 tonnes annually. Taking into account both the ecological aspect and the potential economic benefits of recovering minerals from mine waters and geothermal brines, it is necessary to continue the studies on the recovery of minerals from highly mineralized waters in Poland.

Opis:
The Sztoła River is a left-bank tributary of the Biała Przemsza River, into which it flows on the outskirts of the Jaworzno city. Mining of the Quaternary backfilling sands in the Szczakowa sand pit, which is located near the estuary of the Szoła River, began in the mid-1950s. At the beginning of the 1960s, the excavations of the underground Olkusz mine of zinc and lead ores, which was built to the east of the upper part of the Sztoła River, began to be drained. The excavations occurred in Triassic carbonate rocks. The gravity drainage system of the Szczakowa sand pit was moving east, up the river, and at the same time the difference between the drainage affected and the natural groundwater level in the Sztoła Riverbasin increased. At the end of the1960s the level and length of the main drainage excavations in the Olkusz mine were already stabilized. The changing range of the Szczakowa sand pit drainage and the quasi-fixed drainage range of the Olkusz mine had an impact on the supply conditions of the Sztoła River, which was recharged by underground water from the Olkusz-Pomorzany mine. The paper presents the results of the analysis of the drainage impact of both mines on changes in the flow rate of the Sztoła River in the years 1959-2021 and an estimated forecast of the river condition after shutting down the drainage of the Olkusz area mines in December 2021.

Opis:
Analysis of physical and chemical properties of water runoff samples collected in the vicinity of a spoil heap near the coal mine in Libiąż showed that they represented a classic example of acid mine drainage. For the first time in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, it has been documented that rainwater in contact with a surface layer of waste containing pyrite (FeS2) and scarce carbonate phases, produces strongly acidified wastewater. This process is accompanied by a dramatic increase in the concentration of dissolved ions (eg. Cl-, SO , Fe, Al, Mn). Further geochemical changes occur in the ditch collecting water runoff at the base of the heap. At this stage, oxidation of pyrite catalyzed by bacteria, followed by hydrolysis of iron Fe3+ to form goethite (FeO(OH)) leads to conversion of the less acidic (pH 2.6-3.5), short-time retention runoff water into the aggressive stagnant runoff water (pH 2.1-2.8). Further disintegration of Carboniferous claystones occurs in the acidic stagnant water environment, leading to the decomposition of mineral phases containing heavy metals dispersed in the rock matrix and to mobilization of Zn, Ni, Cu, Cd, Co, and Cr.
