Opis:
Electrical conductivity is used in the study of fresh-water and/or mineralized water outflow zones. Conductivity of water is relatively low. It strongly depends on its salinity and mineralization. Increased salinity and mineralization of water give rise to conductivity growth of hydrogeological medium. Finding water leak zones is an important problem during planning any building works. The influence of water on the building can be disadvantageous (elution, destruction of the foundations and sulfate aggressiveness). Because of high conductivity of water, watered zones can be recognized with the use of electromagnetic methods. The paper presents results of examination of mineralized water leak zones on the building site of the new CYFRONET building in the Ruczaj quarter, Cracow, Poland. The examinations were conducted with the use of ground conductivity meters. The main goal of the research was to find mineralized water leakage under the foundations of the new-built building.

Opis:
Interaction of surface water and groundwater is an important element of issue in hydrogeological measurements. Surface water may infiltrate into the subsurface through the bed sediments of rivers and water reservoirs. An opposite direction of reverse water flow through these sediments is also possible with groundwater seeping into surface water. The paper presents two new measuring apparatus: a so-called “filtrometer” and a “gradientmeter”. The filtrometer enables measuring the intensity of water filtration through bed sediments, both during drainage and infiltration. The gradientmeter is designed to measure the hydraulic gradient in the bed sediments. After measuring both of these parameters, it is possible to determine the in situ hydraulic conductivity of these sediments. Usability testing of the new devices was performed under field conditions. The filtrometer and the gradientmeter were used to determine the drainage conditions of a tested section of the Parsêta river. The drainage volume measured with the instruments was in good agreement accordance with the value obtained using the differential water flow method. The proposed new method way of determining the hydraulic parameters of the bed sediments extends the present scope of hydrogeological research.

Opis:
The interaction between surface water and groundwater throughout the hyporheic zone determines the diurnal water level fluctuations in springs, streams and lakes. The previous studies have listed evapotranspiration, variability of hydraulic conductivity in the hyporheic zone, melting andfreeze-thawing processes, thermal expansion and water viscosity among the factors responsible for the water level diurnal fluctuations. The aim of the research was to investigate the variability of hydraulic conductivity in the hyporheic zone and its impact on the diurnal fluctuations of the water level. Experimental series were performed in laboratory conditions using seepage columns. Four types of sand sediments, with a hydraulic conductivity ranging from 6x10-6 to 5x10-4 m/s, were tested. The obtained values of hydraulic conductivity appeared to depend on the sand grain size, temperature, the direction of the hydraulic gradient, and the fluidization of the sediment (flowing sand). In all tests, higher hydraulic conductivity values were observed when water was set to flow in the direction opposite to gravity (flow up) rather than downward (flow down). In the sediments, which have not reached the state of fluidization, with an increase of the hydraulic gradient, values of hydraulic conductivity were two times higher during flow up than in the case of flow down. In the case of sediments being fluidized, the obtained values of hydraulic conductivity were roughly 3 times higher. The initiation of the fluidization process has been observed at the hydraulic gradient close to one. The results of laboratory experiments allow for a better understanding of the factors that have impact on diurnal fluctuations of the water level, especially when seepage of groundwater is present. Fluidization of the hyporheic zone after precipitation or thawing events may inhibit diurnal fluctuations.

Laboratory tests, which enable determination of the permeability properties of soil, are distinguished by the accuracy and relatively shorttesttime. Moreover, laboratory methods using a triaxial compression apparatus expand capability for tests with a different filtration regime and a spatial stress state applied on the analysed material. Such flexibility of research procedures allows for a number of scientific and engineering applications. The article outlines the construction of the triaxial apparatus system dedicated to filtration tests, their procedure, and important interpretation aspects.

Opis:
The need to continuously monitor the flood embankment is necessary to introduce the measurement methods which give quick results in crisis situations. The protection of embankments as well as the prevention from floods are not only associated with the examination of the body river levee. Experience suggests that one of the problems involves the unknown geotechnical conditions of the levee base. Unfortunately, point geotechnical surveys carried out with a big measurement step were not able to fully identify the lithology variation over larger areas. This is caused by the high cost of drilling shallow wells. The application of non-invasive geophysical methods allows the completion of geotechnical research, and supplies additional information about the variability of geological medium. The structure in the area of the former river beds creates favorable conditions for carrying out geophysical surveys dependent on the variability of geoelectrical properties of rocks. This problem is solved by the use of conductivity method on the 100 m long part of the flood bank. This is recommended for quick and non-invasive measurements. A complex interpretation of geotechnical, hydrogeological and geophysical data provided information about the variability of geoelectrical parameters over this area and therefore made it possible to identify areas prone for greater filtration during high water levels.

Many research methods enable the determination of the permeability properties of the soil. These methods differ, inter alia, in accuracy, complexity, application ranges, and technical conditions. The choice of a particular method is often dictated by the purpose of determining the hydraulic conductivity. The review of the most popular methods facilitates the optimization of the selection, as well as the application of mutually verifying methods or using them at different stages of the research. The article summarizes selected methods of determining the soil hydraulic conductivity from common research groups, including correlation, laboratory, and field methods, as well as less frequently used geophysical methods.

Opis:
Vistulian Glaciation ice-dammed lake clays with a varved texture were investigated. The study was focused on numerical determination of horizontal permeability depending on the depth and clay content. Direct assessment of these parameters is a rather complex and time-consuming issue. Therefore, a shortened methodology is offered based on the obtained relationships and the analysis of the dissipation process of excess pore pressure. The studies included mainly in situ tests: Marchetti dilatometer test (DMT) and BAT piezometer test. These methods allowed obtaining the values of the coefficient ofpermeability kh and changeability ofpore pressure u0 in a vertical profile. Investigations included 17 permeability tests using a BAT piezometer and 6 measurements of the coefficient of permeability kh, based on dissipation DMT tests. Results of in situ tests were compared with laboratory test results of the clay content. Values of the horizontal coefficient ofpermeability kh were correlated with the clay content f of varved clays. This relationship shows a high coefficient of correlation. A new formula was also proposed for the prediction of the coefficient of permeability kh in varved clays based on the pore pressure u0 stabilization curve, and thus shortening significantly the process of the coefficient kh determination.

Opis:
This article presents the results obtained from geophysical measurements as a supplement to and refinement of geological information obtained from engineering geological studies for the newly constructed highways. The research was conducted using two geophysical methods: Ground Conductivity Meters (GCM) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT). The above measurements were made on three research fields located along the planned express road S-19 (Kraśnik-Janów Lubelski section). These areas were selected due to the large amount of available archival data and varied geological conditions. The publication focuses primarily on the presentation of the results obtained using the very fast and extremely efficient GCM method. By processing GCM data, using Laterally Constrained Inversion (LCI) and Spatially Constrained Inversion (SCI) algorithms, the values ofelectrical resistivity of the surveyed centers were derived. The results are presented in the form of cross-sections and maps of electrical resistivity from different depths, which were collated and compared with the results from another geophysical method, ERT. These examples show that the use of inversion has a significant impact on the refinement of geological boundaries between layers of different electrical resistivities. Thanks to the correlation of geophysical data with boreholes and engineering geological probes, detailed models of the geological structure of the analyzed areas were elaborated, which are necessary for the selection of appropriate solutions for the construction and modernization of road infrastructure.

Opis:
During research on the hydrogeological properties of Devonian carbonate rocks in the Holy Cross Mountains (Góry Świętokrzyskie) 141 samples of limestone and dolomite rocks were collected from natural out-crops and quarries located within the Southern (Kielecki) region of the Holy Cross Mountains. Using stan-dard laboratory methods open (interconnected) porosities, permeabilities (recalculated as hydraulic conductivity for water) and specific yield coefficients were determined. Open porosities of the limestones and dolomites are very low. Similar results were obtained with hydraulic conductivity testing, with slightly higher values in the dolomites than in the limestones. The specific yield in all cases was zero. Thus, the studied limestones and dolomites are among the least porous, permeable and yielding rocks in Poland. The test sample population is characterised by having open porosities with a log normal distribution and hydraulic conductivities with an irregular (bimodal) distribution resembling a log normal distribution. A slight corelation between the open porosity and the hydraulic conductivity was demonstrated. This may indicate a greater portion of the smallest pores contributing towards the sum total open porosity under test conditions; in natural hydraulic conditions they would be inactive. Their contribution must be quite signifi-cant (the lack of specific yields), but variable (low relation between open porosity and hydraulic conductivity). Discussed are also possible correlations between the studied parameters and the rock matrix structure (classified as either pelite, sparite or crystalline — no correlation was demonstrated), the occurrence of fractures (no correlation) or the sampling locations. Although it was not possible to show variability of parameters within particular tectonic structures, statistically significant differences were observed between structural features regarding the open porosity (but not for hydraulic conductivity).

Opis:
The paper presents the review of methods for determining hydrogeological properties of rock mass in the place of mine shaft location. The largest Polish copper ore deposit is located in the Fore-Sudetic Monocline. It is the Kupferschiefer-type deposit occurring at a depth of 400 to 1200 metres. During the last 60 years the deposit was opened with 30 mine shafts, and the 31st shaft is currently being sunk. The methods of hydrogeological tests in boreholes as well as the methods of estimation of hydrogeological parameters and prediction of water inflow into the sinking mine shaft have evolved through the years. In the 1960s, the most popularfield test was the well bailing/infiltration test, and the most popular methods ofparameters estimation and inflow prognosis were analytical equations and analytical methods of water inflow forecasting. These methods provide very uncertain results. The best and reliable results of predicted water inflows are derived from methods based on long-term pumping tests and numerical modelling. These methods were used in the IMore project which concerns possibilities of dewatering of the Bundsandstein aquiferfor a mine shaft sinking purpose.
