Opis:
The Mała Cave in Mułowa has been explored to a depth of 555 m at the beginning of the 21th century. It makes a good opportunity to review the knowledge on the geological structure of the Ciemniak Massif. The geological research was performed in two main conduits of the cave. The Mała Cave in Mułowa developed in Lower and Middle Triassic carbonates belonging to the dziary Unit (CzerwoneWierchy Nappe – part of the High-Tatric Allochthon), as well as in marly shales of the Zabijak Formation and limestones of the Wysoka Turnia Limestone Formation belonging to the High-Tatric Autochthon. The cave is the second outcrop of the lower limb of the main syncline of the dziary Unit. It follows that the dziary Unit in the Ciemniak area is represented by a recumbent, open syncline with completely preserved both limbs. This syncline is open northtoward . The fold axes are subhorizontal and the axis surface is inclined ~37o N. From a depth of 300 m (below the entrance), the cave was formed at the contact of Cretaceous rocks belonging to the autochthonous cover and Triassic rocks of the dziary Unit.

Opis:
In 21st century the chronostratigraphy of cave sediments is built on the basis of modern methods: sedimentological analysis, statistical analysis of palaeozoological data, radiometric and luminescence dating and many others. For the time of last 50 000 years the four geochronological units (or appropriate chronostratigraphic units) are usually proposed in Poland in the researches of cave sediments. They are: Interpleniglacial, Upper/Younger Pleniglacial, Late Glacial and Holocene. That scheme has over 150 years of evolution, and its origin was tied with biostratigraphical scheme built by Edouard Lartet in a middle of 19th century. Lartet's stratigraphy for the same period was also made of four units: Cave Bear Epoch, Mammoth and Wooly Rhinoceros Epoch, Reindeer Epoch and Auroch Epoch. Although basing on different methods and using different terminology, the two schemes – from the 19th and from 21st centuries – are similar and correlatabl

Opis:
Developed in the Devonian limestones the Raj (Paradise) Cave, with the rich dripstone attire, located near the city of Kielce, was the first cave in Poland to be opened to the public in a modern way 50 years ago and thus the first geotouristic site in the Świętokrzyskie (Holy Cross) region. Unrestricted exploration soon after its discovery led to the destruction of some speleothems. That is why the cave entrance was closed and a decision to protect the cave by its commercialization was made. Archaeological excavations and geological and palaeontological investigations of the Pleistocene cave sediments were carried out duringthe preparation ofthe tourist route. Transforming the cave into a show cave allowed maintaining its intrinsic (scientific) and extrinsic (aesthetic) values. However, tourism has also put a negative impact on the cave (mechanical damages of the speleothems, lampenflora, contaminations). Therefore, the authors consider whether protection and public access represent two contrasting or rather complementary concepts and from this perspective make an attempt to assess the 50 years of geotourism in Raj Cave.

Opis:
The paper reviews the recent state ofstudies for karst phenomena on northern slopes of the Śnieżnik Massif, Krowiarki range and Zlote Mts in East Sudetes with particular reference to Biała Lądecka basin. Conflned spatial character of the d/ainagf basinand cave sites within allow a better understanding of landscape response to climate and tectonic proxies controlling landscape evolution at least since the end ofMiocene (Messinian). New karst passages discoveries from Niedźwiedzia Cave resulted in the recognition of several sites of allochthonous sediments deposited at different cave morphological levels up to 50 metres above Kleśnica river floor. Furthermore, a new model ofpolygenetic origin for some karst chambers in Niedźwiedzia Cave originating from karstification processes and mass-movements superimposed has been suggested. Presumably, it may be linked with neotectonic processes and/or climatic changes affecting East Sudetes during the Late Cenozoic.

Opis:
The paper presents new data on origin of parallel orientation of modern assemblages of bone remains in dry, terrestrial environment, unaffected by any influence of hydraulic processes. The studies were carried out in the gallery no. 6 of ancient underground millstone quarry situated in forests near the Potok Senderki village, Central Roztocze Upland. The studied material included animal bone remains found in dry gallery, presently inhabited by red foxes (Vulpes vulpes L.). Azimuths of long bone axes as well as strike azimuths o vertical adit walls which confine occurrence of bone clusters, were measured using geological compass. The obtained results make it possible to conclude that linear parallel orientation of bone remains may occur in a dry, terrestrial environment. Such orientation of clusters is formed mainly due to repetitive movement of carnivores along vertical walls of the adit whereas no influence of hydraulic processes is needed here. The presence of a distinct, preferred orientation of the bones requires interaction of two specific factors: the place has to be inhabited by carnivorous animals for a long time (at least for a few months) and the corridor, along which animals move, has to be bounded by steep to vertical walls. Caves are particularly predisposed type of sites, where the occurrence of linear bone orientation may be expected. The studies were dealing with effects of actualistic processes but the described situation and the obtained conclusions may be valid in the case of fossil bone assemblages, for example those of the Pleistocene age.

Opis:
Structural evolution of the autochtonous Tatric sedimentary cover is discussed on the basis of results of structural studies on the Wysoka - Za Siedmiu Progami Cave and 3D modeling of subsurface geological structure of upper part of the Kraków Gorge in theWestern Tatra Mts. The studies showed presence of three faults. The oldest fault was formed during the Late Cretaceous and rejuvenated in subsequent phases of deformations, as evidenced by multi-stage mineralization. Strike of that fault is meridian and of the two others - latitudinal. Dislocations and collapses corridors, and normal-slip movement parallel to the slope proves their activity during the Quaternary. The course of the Malmian-Neocomian and Urgonian boundary was also defined. On the west side of the studied area, the bedding is shaped in crest-like inverted syncline. Axis of the syncline plunges toward the north at the angle of 55 degrees to its crossing with the meridian fault. In lower limb of the root-hinge and at western side of the meridian fault the layers are arranged in the form of a wide anticline.

Opis:
Recognition of subsoil in areas threatened with discontinuous deformation associated with the existence of natural and mining voids can be implemented by various geophysical methods. The purpose of such research, apart from confirming the existence of voids, is to determine their spatial extent. This is not a simple issue, regardless of the geophysical method used. This paper discusses the possibilities of geometrization of karst phenomenon localization using the ground penetrating radar (GPR) method by the example of a karst cave as a natural void. The area of data acquisition is located on limestone formations with numerous karstforms. The study object is the main hall of the karst cave with a height of up to 3 m, located at a depth of 3 to 7 m below the surface. Such location and shape of the subsurface structure made it possible for the author to perform a wide range of research. Their original aspects are presented in this paper. The shape of the hall was obtained using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). The GPR data were obtained employing the 250 MHz shielded antenna that was directly positioned using a robotized total station with the option of automatic target tracking. Thus, the GPR and geodetic data were immediately achieved in a uniform coordinate system. The accuracy of the data obtained in this way is discussed in this paper. The author’s original algorithm for processing of GPR data into a point cloud is presented. Based on the results obtained, it was possible to compare the GPR signal, which represents the shape of the cave hall, in relation to its image in the form of a point cloud from terrestrial laser scanning. A unique part of this paper is the selection of filtration procedures and their parameters in optimal GPR data processing, which were widely discussed and documented in a way beyond the standard filtration procedures. A significant contribution is the analysis that was carried out on the data obtained in the field and on the model data generated using the finite difference method. Modeling was carried out for two wave sources: exploding reflector and point. The presented methodology and discrimination between the actual shape of the cave, GPR field data and model data made it possible for the author to draw many conclusions related to the possibilities of shape geometrization of the subsurface voids determined by the GPR method.
